Off contract A-League players
Today's Feature: Melbourne City

James Brown
The 26 year old youth international has struggled for game time since leaving the Jets. A former goal of the year winner could be a decent experienced back up (if we have no promising youngsters in attacking midfield coming through) on minimum wage after we sign a starting attacking midfielder.

Wade Dekker
The 22 year old striker scored in his first two senior appearances and looked set to be a rising star before injury struck. The former Northcote City youngster could be a good back up striker/winger if Trent Buhagiar is seen to need competition.

Aaron Hughes
The former Premier League defender can be considered nothing but a flop for Melbourne City. Near constantly injured and only making six appearances the 36 year old couldn't break into the Melbourne City defence. Seeing as we've already used a visa spot on a central defender and the Northern Irishman didn't show particularly much in his limited game time at Melbourne City I'd say it's highly unlikely we'll see him in a palm tree shirt next season.

Patrick Kisnorbo
The Melbourne born hard nut centre back has been a main stay in the Heart and City defence since his signing in 2013. Often criticized by Heart fans his lack of pace has been found out numerous times in the past few years. Could do well if paired with a younger quicker player and offers a wealth of experience for younger players. Should only be considered on minimum wage.

Robert Koren
The former Hull City captain struggled to imprint himself on the A-League and was kept out of his preferred position by Aaron Mooy. Was near constantly quoted as his talents being "wasted" he was kept out of creative midfield by Mooy and then false nine by Fornaroli. The Slovenian international only real accomplishment of note in the A-League was a hat trick against the Newcastle Jets in his starting debut. However he is an accomplished international and a free agent at the moment. We could do worse and may have a point to prove in the A-League. Should only be considered if we can not scout or through our Everton partnership do better.

Marc Marino
The Young Socceroo was kept out of the Melbourne City making only four appearances (all of the bench) but still managed a goal in round 26. The Adelaide born 18 year old could be a good back up striker/winger for Roy O'Donovan and could provide competition for places. If released by Melbourne City could be an option as a minimum wage signing.

Michael Zullo
The attacking socceroo left back made 15 appearances this season but seemingly won't be resigned by Melbourne City. Has spent time in Europe and could push Micky Neill if signed. Is a versatile player that can also play left wing. Will be in demand if released however and is not in a position we overly require new players so is rather unlikely to be in a Mariners shirt next season.

On the Fox Football podcast today Adam said that CCM has asked one senior player to move on or retire early from their contract. Didn't say who but at a guess I'd say it would have to be Rose unless he wants to get rid of Monty to free up a visa spot but that's unlikely.

Also said Liam Rose might end up on a move similar Caceres' move to City via Manchester city adding weight to a similar rumour earlier this month.

Not too many seniors to pick from - Rosey,Monty,Fabio and Roy is about it.

You would think Rosey - too slow to play LB or LM and not a decent enough CB

From his performance over the last weeks of the season and the finals, I can't believe that they'd let him go... I know everyone seems all excited about the quality of WSW currently but, I don't see it tbh... Obviousy they must have some sort of quality as they have managed to drag down just about every team they've played. But I think Castelen was the only real redeeming factor in the semi against Brisbane and I honestly don't understand the claims of it being the "game of the decade"... Yep, it's exciting when there are that many goals scored and they're that close, but quality-wise I actually though City/Adelaide was better to watch - largely thanks to Adelaide, but still.

Anyway, I rant and digress, core point is, that I think Castelen has been a bit of a shining light for them - why would they let him go?

Agree totally.
Without Castelan they would have lost heavily.

Kisnorbo and Koren have some merit.

I wouldn`t mind getting a decent Dutch defender again.
Ron Vlarr might be available & he`d certainly add a lot of experience to our defence.
He`s still got a few good years in him too.

I would absolutely love Castelan. Would be surprised if WSW keep all their stars as they have mostly all gone up in value. We would have lots more room to move in the cap. Would put bums on seats and if a mate of Tavares we would have a chance i guess.
agree to this...I think he is a fantastic player....has great skills, great vision and a strong motor. I've been very impressed every time I've seen him play this season.

You've posted about this possibility many times now, but I've not seen anything else to suggest it's remotely likely. Got any goss to change my mind?

No - but if a first choice keeper is to be signed we do not need 3 keepers and we are looking at paying the minimum of the cap. the third keeper is $55,000 towards the cap and a stint with the U21 or reserves would not hurt either of them with Everton's goalkeeping coaches. what good is the relationship if it is not used.

I agree that it's a good idea, but I don't think it's at all likely. If wishing made it so...

We could pawn one off to a lower league English side while they train with the Everton coaches. But that would only work if the lower league club in question would cover our player's wage which they are unlikely to want to do. We can only offer them a goalkeeper with five games under his belt or one who has played a season but has never kept a clean sheet. I can't see Charlesworth wanting to pay the players wage and flights plus another player we sign.

I cant see Everton wanting one of their coaches to spend time with players they wouldnt even trial let alone sign.

So what does this partnership give us. Their players are blocked by the FFA and we can't use finch Farm for development.:mad:

Clut has left roar to the jets ,the glimpses of what I saw pre aloisi were fantastic, he would have been a great acquisition to the club , with his speed an instinct to score goals ,and the mariners youth mantra oh well who knows .

No doubting his talent but I don't know if he would pass our "no dickheads" policy. Rumoured to have some attitude problems.
