Mariners Squad - HAL 12 - 2016 - 2017

Off contract A-League players
Today's feature: Adelaide United

Mate Dugandzic
Former Melbourne Knight, Dinamo Zagreb, Melbourne Victory and Melbourne Heart winger. Once considered a future Socceroo the former Australian U23 international has struggled for regular game time and form since his horrific broken leg in the 2012/13 season. Is a better player in a creative role and potentially could be the number 10 we need. Would be cheap if Adelaide do not want him. Could be a great signing for us especially if he can become the player that Dinamo thought he could be.

Craig Goodwin
Was a crucial part of Adelaide United's title win this year and has offers from Europe. The former Heart and Jets starlet has gone from a strength to strength at Adelaide. Unlikely we could sign him and isn't in the position we particularly need to strengthen. Maybe keep on speed dial if his potential European move goes south.

John Hall
The Olyroo has only made 7 appearances for the Reds in his four years at the club showed potential however in his few games. Not in a position we need nor seemingly wanted by Adelaide will be interesting to see where he ends up.

Dylan McGowan
Seemingly targeted by Sydney FC the former Hearts of Midlothian man will be hot property this transfer window. We'd be a long shot for the signature not only because of Sydney but because we've gone all in for Alex Wilkinson.

George Mells
With an impressive youth career with Chelsea and Southampton as well as representing both the Joeys and the Greek U17s the defensive minded midfielder has undoubted pedigree and could be a potential "moneyball" signing. Adelaide have an option for another year though so could be unlikely.

Mark Ochieng
A youngster with limited game time who has only played one game for Adelaide (in the FFA Cup) can play as both a right winger and a right fullback. His father represented the Kenyan national team. Could be a decent squaddie and another "moneyball" signing if Adelaide don't resign him.

Pablo Sánchez
The Spanish Ségunda division veteran could be a good signing if he wishes to stay in Australia and doesn't command high wages. Would provide good competition for Fabio down the right but is not in a position we actively need.

Dylan Smith
Young winger who has only appeared once for in the A-League. Could be a decent squaddie if potential is seen in him by Tony Walmsley.

Ben Warland
Young centre back who lacks major A-League experience. Highly unlikely signing considering our youthful backline.

Constantly heard this season that they had, had a falling out with Arnie. Don't know whose fault that was though.

......... has begun clearing out the bad attitudes.

Will Tony be 'rinse, wash - repeat' ???

F#k'n hope not, look at the damage our last clear out had. Even quarantining the 'bad attitudes' had a white-anting effect on the squad.

We CAN'T afford ANY personality defects next season, even just the one, would be the end of Tony.

Apparently very hard to manage and Arnie has begun clearing out the bad attitudes.

No wonder then that Faty said GA had given the Mariners 'glowing praise'.

prod - prod.

That was the easiest putting out of the Otto on bin night he's ever done, NO Mr's in his ear either. Crafty.

Geez, we're laying into these blokes, one not even signed yet, based on hearsay?
I think it's fair enough Timmah, there were and are equivalent options available not only players around the world but Australians that are as good if not better. After the season we've had which was destroyed by infighting we really should be doing proper research into every player we signs character. Tavares and Faty aren't and weren't the only players out there who we could have signed which means we should be as critical as possible when we hear of any trouble they have had or caused because we cannot afford to get a single signing wrong. Signing Faty so early was a mistake I feel too. We should have seen who was available before committing a wage to an underpeforming visa player. We had no competition for his signature so why did we not assess the other options out there.

So with that front 3 - Austin & Fab get benched, right ?

If they sub on - the formation has to then change to make up for their defensive culpabilities. ;)

I think these 2, and that issue will be a real headache for TW next season.

Think one of your previous posts PJ where you said something like ......

"Next season, people may find that some of the players that they consider to be our best players may in fact fail to get a regular starting spot on the team sheet"

........ will definitely ring true, perhaps even for these 2 players.

They were exactly the two I was thinking of.

please no more youtube signings because last season we were known as palm tree fc the last thing that we want to be known as is youtube fc because we're known for developing young players.

Faty is a great signing.
He will be the best CB we have had since Dutchy.
Tavares is a decent player but I think there are better players available.

Leonardo has been cut from the scum. Could be useful but could start a start with McGing.

Leonardo is shite and that's why they have punted him.

For all Tavares reputation he would be the best passer out since Griffiths.

Sydney's problem was they had no one in front of him

Don't believe everything you hear. If you read the Smurfs' forum Faty is going with a lot of respect.

I'm not questioning whether he is a good signing or not but to spend a visa spot on player is a big deal. Surely it takes more than two days to look at all our options especially if they are a visa player to check the club's networks around the world to see who is available. Maybe Faty is the best option right now but in 6 weeks or so he may not be.

I agree, but let's do a review on recruitment practices...

Did the Kim/Mane style YouTube recruits deliver more than the Heff/Stella style state league recruits??

It's a bloody sad state of affairs either way...

So I'm just going to say it... I think Mane was a signing with much much more potential than we were able to develop and utilise at the time... I think he could have been extraordinarily dangerous in this season's side, paired up with Austin on the other side and Roy at the front, we just didn't have the cattle to do much with him at the time and, obviously, he didn't have the temper...

That does assume, though, that they haven't looked at anyone prior to the end of the season... For one, I'm fairly certain Storrie said that they have been looking for a while, for another, I'd be both surprised and disappointed if the recruitment piece only goes for a couple of weeks, leading to a signing...
