Mariners Squad - HAL 12 - 2016 - 2017

Coach - I know you don't won't to argue on you sums - just one minor correction. The cap is now $2.6mill so 90% is $2.34 million.

PatJ thanks - I had used the 2015/16 cap etc numbers and they have gone up slightly (5% for next year). I was only refering to my squad estimate cap value in regard to arguing over sums, so all good., I think that means we have an extra $50k up our sleeve

Going back to Coach's post I have a cost estimate of the current squad of the current including Faty and Kalik as $1,750,000. If we do buy an 'A League level keeper' then we must offload (loan to Everton) one of THB or Izzo. That would save as a minimum $55,000 so we are back to $1,695,000. Salary floor is $2,340,000. So we therefore have $645,000 for further recruiting.

Given the quoted figure of $300,000 for Wilko then we $345,000 for a GK, HM and CAM. Of course Wilko could be considered as a marquee (and could be funded by a third party) in which case the $645,000 could be used for the GK, HM and CAM plus maybe Trent and Jake Adelson.

Pretty much aligns with my thinking and numbers. I have not seen Adelson play - potential?

Having pondered this for 24hrs, I think it is imperative that we get a Wilkinson or the like. Faty suggests we have a cast off whilst Wilkinson would be seen to have come to us by choice. This has a triple impact. One - the current player impact will be good as they see a top player wanting to come, only bodes well for confidence. Two, it will engender confidence and positivity from the fans and finally it can only but have a positive impact on other players concidering CCM.

The thing we really don't know is exactly how much money frees up by not having to pay out ex-player/s contracts.
I'm guessing that is where a large portion of the *increased* spending will come from. It won't be so much increased in terms of real physical spend but will be an increase in terms of the players on the park. (i.e. not having to pay Bosnar means we can pay AND PLAY Faty).

I'm sure this is obvious to all and apologies if that was already factored in and I just missed it

SBS article comments that Faty is the first of two key defensive signings by TW, Wilko would be great if he was the second however the offer was pre Faty.
Tavares has also been linked with us pending personal terms. He too would be expensive but I rate him in the midfield, can hold possession under pressure and moves the ball quickly, something we were definitely lacking this season, would complement Monty who is better doing the disruptive stuff.
Any suggestions re a GK and CAM?
The main attribute of Adelson from the limited time I watched him was his speed, not sure if ACL surgery will affect this. Looked absolutely lost in his 2 A league appearances, Trent showed more promise imo.

GK and CAM are the definite question marks though Vukovic and Covic could both answer the GK conundrum. Would love Vuko back.

My reading of the signing intent re: defenders have me thinking that we just have 2 in talks with potential for more yet - mostly hopeful and pinning this on the specific language used in the SBS article:
"the first of at least two key defensive signings in coach Tony Walmsley’s sights for the 2016-2017 A-League season"

CAM is a much harder one for me - no idea frankly.
Not certain Taveres is the right signing for DM but will be happy enough with such a signing if it occurs.

As far as I am aware Roy, Monty and Fabio are all visa players.
If so the club really need to get their asses in gear in regards to Monty and Fabio. Every other club in the A-League would have pushed them to become a non visa player by now because if they are not we lose out big time.

my uncle in Maastricht who has been around the dutch second division & MVV as a player and fan since the 50s told me on email the other day that after seeing a dozen games of the Mariners this year ( dunno how he managed that) he would keep the yellow haired #4 and sack the rest of the backs including this keeper who got knocked out...I may have to agree

Didnt Storrie say he wanted 2 defenders and 2 midfielders?

Faty,Wilko,Tavares and a 10?

Danny or Covic would be a massive boost. While neither are at their peak, TW's post match whinge about Izzo indicates he might have finally seen the bleeding obvious

thats a bit wierd innit, TW has gone from weeks on end of all sunshine and moonpies to whining about players at pressers....pressure got to him perhaps

I've been wondering this myself - I suspect he may not have had full say in it, and that if he did he might also have punted Izzo. I suspect management put the hard word on him to maintain Izzo to develop for a sell on with the season all but written off anyway

I thought he was an outstanding captain and to this day, the loudest one we have ever had.

Mrs Rowdy agrees, she always could pick out his voice organising from the back either at the game or watching on the telly. My hearings shit, I'd hear the player screaming but couldnt figure out who it was.

A nice guy off the pitch doesn't necessarily mean you aren't a real competitor on the pitch.

Once Wilko crosses that white-line, he's 'all business' & does it with a cool under pressure persona, which I think confuses people to think he's a bit soft .... but he ain't.

Michael Thwaite is similar in comparison. Always plays with a smile from ear to ear but just like Wilko, a fierce competitor on the pitch.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that:

if we put together a decent defence
+
play out from the back somewhat better
+
our attackers have the luxury to stay forward and work on pressing and attack more
=
Roy will be up the golden boot end of the stats this year coming.

I know that sounds optimistic but:
* he put away 8 in a very difficult team to succeed in,
* he put away 8 with 8 weeks out suspended,
* he harries and chases everything every bit as well as Matty S did,
* he's actually a very very good striker and poacher (imo the best we've had)

Worth bearing in mind as well, that he only truly started firing (pardon the pun) after he returned... If he can hold on to that form he's looking good - although he doesn't have Garcia to play off anymore either...

SFC also have been linked and I think asked permission to speak to Dylan McGowan.

If they get him they would not be interested in Wilko you would think.

He is a fair judge then.

Wilko has a place at North Avoca and his father is a member who still attends games.
I'd say we are in with a chance.
Wilko no longer owns property on the Coast. Media reports about money are so far off the mark, it's ridiculous. Don't believe what is reported.

He'll make a decision in the next couple of weeks but it may be a while after that before its announced. He has options but the Mariners are going hard for him. A lot more to play out yet.

Neither are natural captains.
Monty earned it but being the only decent player at the time.
Wilko doesn't warrant the arm band IMHO.
Both are leaders by example rather than by word.

Capt fatty walks straight into it.
As would danny or covic
