In a defence that let in 3?

Yes.

And he was in a defence that let in 1 and otherwise dominated. Other two goals came after he was subbed.

First goal was just bad luck. Faty's distribution alone made a huge impact on the sides performance but he was very good over all. Strangers all around me making same comment. If he was shit I'd have no reason not to say so or hesitation to do so.

Anyway, last two goals came from counters when we were pressing for the equaliser. Disingenuous to try and measure an individual players defensive performance simply on goals conceded.

Izzo has had several blinders when we've copped multiple goals.

Could be a quite January as there are limited players who are stuck in teams with long contracts. As 3/4 of the Comp are off contract at seasons end there are limited opportunities to pick up Connar Pains and Scott Galloways.

Connar Chapman had a couple year contract but has gone o/s.

WSW were very strong in the media about getting recruits and have come up with nothing.

Newcastle coach mentioned they have given up in January as there is no quality around and they have already been signing good players for next season they just can't announce them yet. They said no point being short sighted.

I'd say a lot of clubs are probably doing this and with the uncertainty over who they get they won't let players leave they might otherwise just in case they don't get what they want or any better.

Looks like we will be keeping the cousins based on Faty playing and the comment Taveras is hurt but hopes to play last month. Could effectively be a 3-4 month trial for next year as we would probably want Taveras again if fit next year

averas is close to retirement, same with Faty. We should be looking to europe. Maybe get a decent defender from dutch leagues.
If only it were that easy. Remember, for every Patrick Zwaanswijk there's 20 Marcel Seips.

Well this has been an absolutely fast and furious transfer window, I'm having trouble keeping track of all the rumours....

I predicted in Dec that I felt we wouldn't make any purchases this transfer window as the club has already accepted this year. I had a few disagree with me but new players are not looking likely. Tav, Adelson injured and Fletcher and McDonald released. At least the wage roll will be healthy and MC might have another break even season or a small profit.

Lol I guess as an optimist I assumed we released players early and paid their full contracts out in an effort to sign more, better players...

Maybe that was the case but the players trialled wouldn't have been good enough, so instead of settling for what was available, we're sticking with what we've got?

TBH, I think players being released was as much as anything being fair to those players and allowing them to pursue other opportunities.

It does free up spots, but given all the uncertainties around the next TV deal, etc. I doubt we're signing anyone past the end of the season unless we know they're going to be good value for this season and next (balancing their performance against the opportunity costs - both monetary and their taking up of a squad spot). The players Okon has signed past this season (Rose and Buhagiar) are both up-and-comers who I think we can be comfortable in keeping.

The other locked in players are Ascroft, McGing, Powell and Pain to the end of next season and Berry to the season after that.

So our starting line-up for next year is at present:

1
2 - McGing - Ascroft - 5
Rose - Berry
10
Buhagiar - Powell - Pain

I've got Powell as a 9, because I think that's what he is.

But that leaves a huge number of squad spots to be filled (17!) and unless we've overpaid massively, we've got a long way to go even to get to the cap floor. A number of these guys would be squaddies at other clubs, so we'd be looking at signing upgrades. But in a capped league, every club has starters that aren't much above squaddies, especially those with growth potential. So we pick where to gamble with youth and we pick where to upgrade.

Given the last two to three years, I'd want upgrades at DM and CB.

We have to design the squad we want *before* extending deals.

Players off contract are:
  • Adelson
  • Appiah-Kubi
  • Bingham
  • Faty
  • Ferreira
  • Galloway
  • Izzo
  • Montgomery
  • Necevski
  • Neill
  • O’Donovan
  • Poscoliero
  • Roux
  • Tavares
There are some easy calls. I don't think we'd have the cousins again, I think we'd be more likely to bring Pearce through than have Necevski,

I think re-signing Izzo is a no-brainer. He's done exactly what you'd want a young player under pressure to do - he's worked his arse off and improved his game massively.

I'd want to keep Monty. I think O'Donovan is handy. Other than that I'd be looking to young players with some games under the belt - Galloway, Neill, Roux, Poscoliero. These guys are either starters or potentially handy filler, and every squad needs handy filler.

That leaves us with the below:

Izzo/Pearce
Roux/Posco - CB/McGing - CB/Ascroft - Galloway/Neill
Monty/Rose - DM/Berry
AM/AM
Buhagiar/RW - O'Donovan/Powell - Pain/LW

That brings us to 15 signed, with 8 spots to go and plenty of cap space (even to the floor, no matter what goes on with the TV deal).

There are some others I'm not sure about - Ferreira? Bingham? Adelson? Appiah-Kubi?

There are some places where we're probably looking for upgrades and others where we might not. Some players might shift around a bit too - both Ascroft and McGing can play DM, and Berry can play AM, and we might change shape to two AMs at times.

But for *all* of this, we need the FTA networks and Cricket Australia to lock in the BBL deal before the FFA can get the FTA deal locked away and let clubs know what they have to spend.
