TBH, I think players being released was as much as anything being fair to those players and allowing them to pursue other opportunities.
It does free up spots, but given all the uncertainties around the next TV deal, etc. I doubt we're signing anyone past the end of the season unless we know they're going to be good value for this season and next (balancing their performance against the opportunity costs - both monetary and their taking up of a squad spot). The players Okon has signed past this season (Rose and Buhagiar) are both up-and-comers who I think we can be comfortable in keeping.
The other locked in players are Ascroft, McGing, Powell and Pain to the end of next season and Berry to the season after that.
So our starting line-up for next year is at present:
1
2 - McGing - Ascroft - 5
Rose - Berry
10
Buhagiar - Powell - Pain
I've got Powell as a 9, because I think that's what he is.
But that leaves a huge number of squad spots to be filled (17!) and unless we've overpaid massively, we've got a long way to go even to get to the cap floor. A number of these guys would be squaddies at other clubs, so we'd be looking at signing upgrades. But in a capped league, every club has starters that aren't much above squaddies, especially those with growth potential. So we pick where to gamble with youth and we pick where to upgrade.
Given the last two to three years, I'd want upgrades at DM and CB.
We have to design the squad we want *before* extending deals.
Players off contract are:
There are some easy calls. I don't think we'd have the cousins again, I think we'd be more likely to bring Pearce through than have Necevski,
- Adelson
- Appiah-Kubi
- Bingham
- Faty
- Ferreira
- Galloway
- Izzo
- Montgomery
- Necevski
- Neill
- O’Donovan
- Poscoliero
- Roux
- Tavares
I think re-signing Izzo is a no-brainer. He's done exactly what you'd want a young player under pressure to do - he's worked his arse off and improved his game massively.
I'd want to keep Monty. I think O'Donovan is handy. Other than that I'd be looking to young players with some games under the belt - Galloway, Neill, Roux, Poscoliero. These guys are either starters or potentially handy filler, and every squad needs handy filler.
That leaves us with the below:
Izzo/Pearce
Roux/Posco - CB/McGing - CB/Ascroft - Galloway/Neill
Monty/Rose - DM/Berry
AM/AM
Buhagiar/RW - O'Donovan/Powell - Pain/LW
That brings us to 15 signed, with 8 spots to go and plenty of cap space (even to the floor, no matter what goes on with the TV deal).
There are some others I'm not sure about - Ferreira? Bingham? Adelson? Appiah-Kubi?
There are some places where we're probably looking for upgrades and others where we might not. Some players might shift around a bit too - both Ascroft and McGing can play DM, and Berry can play AM, and we might change shape to two AMs at times.
But for *all* of this, we need the FTA networks and Cricket Australia to lock in the BBL deal before the FFA can get the FTA deal locked away and let clubs know what they have to spend.
That's why you got a nice question from Cahn on Podcast. I thought it was funny he wasn't on the lineup for the glory game. Is that why some of the youth boys are training with first team to cover Peterson, Fletcher and MacDonald.Ryan Peterson has just put on twitter that he's leaving.
That sucks. One of my favourite young talents we had. Seems a bit of a shock too considering Paolo had pulled him from youth to train with the first team. Maybe more to the story or he was sick of being in limbo and not playing and asked to leave.
All the best to him.
Must have been a very frustrating year for a young player. Great to be elevated and training, always terrible not to be playing.
On the other hand, can you really blame Okon. Hard year for Bingham also.
My guess would be he's got a decent NPL offer somewhere else - be silly to leave now unless something else was in the offing. Unless yeah, he's very bitter.
Rumour that Adelaide are chasing Posco.
NothingDid anything come from the Forum today?
Did I read player signings to be announced at it?
Also according TWG reporting we're about to table an offer to extend O'Donovan! Great news IMO!
Rumour that Adelaide are chasing Posco.
Stronger rumour from BG they have him...Rumour that Adelaide are chasing Posco.
Arguably the player we need to sign if aside from his qualities he is the type of player where other players will come as he is upfront.Nothing said at forum
Central Coast Mariners have fast-forwarded an offer for Roy O'Donovan in a bid to stop him from falling into the hands of another A-League team.

The World Game reported on December 28 that the Mariners, who exist on a very tight budget, needed to know how much A-League clubs would receive in their annual grant from Football Federation Australia before they could make a concrete offer for O'Donovan to re-sign.
But a decision on the size of the grant and how far it will override the salary cap is dependent on whether FFA can establish a free-to-air component to add to its new pay television deal and news on that could still be months away.
Taking that into consideration, in addition to the fact O'Donovan is being increasingly sought-after by other clubs, Central Coast have now decided they can't wait any longer to move on the Irishman.
"We're confident we've now at least been able to get a little bit more clarity about what we can offer and how we can do it," Mariners CEO Shaun Mielekamp told The World Game.
"So I've indicated in conversations with both Roy and Paddy (Dominguez, the player's manager) that we're set to make an offer.
"That will happen when I next speak to Paddy, very soon. We want to put our best offer forward out of respect for Roy and to make sure he knows our position and how highly we regard him.
"Roy's signature is crucial for us. He's such a positive guy and he has done really well for us and I think there's a great story about to unfold with him here."
O'Donovan, 31, is in the second year of a two-year deal and was the Mariners leading goal-scorer last season, with eight in 19 games, and has that honour again this season with an even better strike-rate of eight goals in 16 games.
Dominguez said that despite there being plenty of interest in O'Donovan, the player was a loyal person who wanted to give the Mariners every chance to keep him.
"I'm talking to Central Coast and we'll wait and see what their offer is and consider it," Dominguez said.
"There is a lot of interest in Roy, but he'll give the Mariners the first chance. That way he's doing the right thing by the club.
"He could decide the offer is good and enter into further talks, or if he doesn't feel the offer is right then we'll entertain other offers."
O'Donovan, who has a young family, makes no secret of the fact he loves life on the Central Coast, at Terrigal, but it is only natural that as a fierce competitor he would want some sort of guarantee the Mariners are going to strengthen the team by adding some established players.
The Jets are known to be chasing O'Donovan and it is understood that a number of other A-League clubs are eyeing him also.
Mielekamp said he was certain the Mariners would be very competitive with their offer.
"We'll do everything we can to keep Roy," he said.
"At the moment I've got no reason to think there will be anything but positive news coming out of here about him."
