Mariners Squad - HAL 12 - 2016 - 2017

TBH, I think players being released was as much as anything being fair to those players and allowing them to pursue other opportunities.

It does free up spots, but given all the uncertainties around the next TV deal, etc. I doubt we're signing anyone past the end of the season unless we know they're going to be good value for this season and next (balancing their performance against the opportunity costs - both monetary and their taking up of a squad spot). The players Okon has signed past this season (Rose and Buhagiar) are both up-and-comers who I think we can be comfortable in keeping.

The other locked in players are Ascroft, McGing, Powell and Pain to the end of next season and Berry to the season after that.

So our starting line-up for next year is at present:

1
2 - McGing - Ascroft - 5
Rose - Berry
10
Buhagiar - Powell - Pain

I've got Powell as a 9, because I think that's what he is.

But that leaves a huge number of squad spots to be filled (17!) and unless we've overpaid massively, we've got a long way to go even to get to the cap floor. A number of these guys would be squaddies at other clubs, so we'd be looking at signing upgrades. But in a capped league, every club has starters that aren't much above squaddies, especially those with growth potential. So we pick where to gamble with youth and we pick where to upgrade.

Given the last two to three years, I'd want upgrades at DM and CB.

We have to design the squad we want *before* extending deals.

Players off contract are:
  • Adelson
  • Appiah-Kubi
  • Bingham
  • Faty
  • Ferreira
  • Galloway
  • Izzo
  • Montgomery
  • Necevski
  • Neill
  • O’Donovan
  • Poscoliero
  • Roux
  • Tavares
There are some easy calls. I don't think we'd have the cousins again, I think we'd be more likely to bring Pearce through than have Necevski,

I think re-signing Izzo is a no-brainer. He's done exactly what you'd want a young player under pressure to do - he's worked his arse off and improved his game massively.

I'd want to keep Monty. I think O'Donovan is handy. Other than that I'd be looking to young players with some games under the belt - Galloway, Neill, Roux, Poscoliero. These guys are either starters or potentially handy filler, and every squad needs handy filler.

That leaves us with the below:

Izzo/Pearce
Roux/Posco - CB/McGing - CB/Ascroft - Galloway/Neill
Monty/Rose - DM/Berry
AM/AM
Buhagiar/RW - O'Donovan/Powell - Pain/LW

That brings us to 15 signed, with 8 spots to go and plenty of cap space (even to the floor, no matter what goes on with the TV deal).

There are some others I'm not sure about - Ferreira? Bingham? Adelson? Appiah-Kubi?

There are some places where we're probably looking for upgrades and others where we might not. Some players might shift around a bit too - both Ascroft and McGing can play DM, and Berry can play AM, and we might change shape to two AMs at times.

But for *all* of this, we need the FTA networks and Cricket Australia to lock in the BBL deal before the FFA can get the FTA deal locked away and let clubs know what they have to spend.
Pearce looks a good keeper but still has a lot of development to go. Ivan is a standard above him and I believe would be a good resign. He puts pressure on Izzo, is happy being a No.2 and if Izzo gets hurt, suspended he is more than capable. Also brings hopefully professionalism that comes with his age.

I'd like both Izzo and Ivan resigned
Pearce is still at least 2 years away for me

I can't see Neill being kept unless they have him as backup to Pain. Has played 1 good game over a long period of time. Problem being, it's a c**t of a spot to fill and it may be harder to find another than it is watching his at times dreadful defending.

Looking forward to see what okon comes up with at AM.

A left-sided utility player is something we need in the squad, whether it's Neill or someone else.

Heard there should be an announcement on a couple of signings at the forum on Friday. Fingers crossed.

I wonder if it'll be a foreigner after Monty gets done on Thursday.
Let's face it if there's not a signing announced at the forum at latest the fans won't be happy.
Obvious place to unveil a new signing though. Come out onto the stage. Lots of clapping etc.
Let's hope we're not disappointed.

Free boots? who do you think we are?

Prior will have a tantrum and ask for a release to join his boyhood heroes at Melbourne City on more money

He ain't a DM he is a CB.
Now he just has to to pass the current Mariners test......

The ball is coming in from the wing, do you.

A. Watch the flight of the ball from alongside or behind the attacking player. Timing your moment well you step inside and clear the ball to safety.
OR.
B. Do you stand miles away from your player, staring at the ball coming in like a Roo in the headlights. Do you then make a lame jump 6ft away from the ball and watch your player, have a quick game of whist and a ham sandwich before jumping up to nod or tap the ball into the net. At which point you flap your arms and look around yelling....well no one told me they were going to jump high and run around!

If you answered B.....your in son.

Can confirm that I'm leaving Sydney Uni AA8s to pursue new opportunities. I'm an experienced centre back as well, FWIW. ;)

Alcoholics Anonymous 8`s....should fit in well with the squad but I have to inform you (sadly) that the after match celebrations have been few & far between over the past few years.

Someone on Reddit suggesting there's a rumour going around that we're looking to grab Poljak from the Jest for next season - anyone heard anything about that?

haven't watched him this year
He is of the same time frame as Monty as far as being Aussie eligible. Still a Foreigner at Jets. Tried seeing if could find anything on Google and just had link to their forum which they think He's eligible in February and has an Aussie wife and child was born here.
Definitely don't want him as a foreigner

Also on there they are fans of O'Caravan. Nice try and apparently one sent Lawrie a tweet about they should chase O'donavon or MacDonald over someone else and Lawrie apparently gave it a like. So they are definitely sniffing around Roy
