He replaced Rose. It was after about 4 rounds from memory. How is that a good sign?
Who replaced Adelson?
NONE of our signing have been a good sign. All have been cheap arse. Our best result was Pain, who Musc**t thought he was swapping a better player for. Only Paddy was good business and we took a punt.
Galloway arrived after two games, so split the difference between you.
We know our signings are cheap. That's not news, and it isn't changing any time soon. The best we can do in the circumstances is sign kids and look for growth potential. The players will improve over time, even if they struggle early - look at both McGing and Ascroft who are miles better than they were last year and are only 21 and 22.
In terms of players that arrived this year, in order of signing:
Walmlsey signings:
Faty - up and down. Ups are decent, downs are shocking, injury worries aren't going to go away at 32
Tavares - a couple of dud halves among some great performances, but again with the injuries it's a worry at 34
Berry - good prospect, only 19, lots of potential. We're yet to find his best spot.
Adelson - another good prospect, only 20, injury worries though.
Necevski - odd signing. Who picks up a 36 year old #2 keeper?
Pain - good swap for Austin, more rounded player and has been handy. Younger too - only 23.
Appiah-Kubi - only 24, but a dead-set head scratcher. I'm guessing he was cheap, but aside from speed I'm yet to see much from him at either Wanderers or Wellington so I'm really not sure what the idea was here.
Powell - he was golden boot at Phoenix last year, but that was from a return of only 8 goals, of which 4 came in one game against an *awful* Wanderers team. So the return of 4 goals from the remaining 13 starts and 10 bench appearances doesn't fill me with joy, and I'm not seeing anything that convinces me that he's more lethal here. He's 25, so unless he's going to suddenly snap into some lethal form, this might be him at his prime.
Okon signings:
Galloway - another kid at only 21, looks more settled than Neill at left back.
I don't really get the O'Donovan love. He runs around a lot, but I don't get the feeling that defenders are afraid of him like they're afraid of a Berisha, Bobo, Santalab, Krishna, Fornaroli, Guardiola... you get my drift.
He's busy, but in any given game I give him a higher chance of getting a yellow (or worse) for an ill-conceived challenge than of scoring a goal from open play. He's been very lucky to not be booked or worse on *several* occasions.
So I think there's some good and bad, but I'll generally cut the club slack for signing kids because at least there's growth potential there. It's the Matt Sims and the Francesco Stellas that drive me bonkers, and we've not had one of them signed this season.
Barring an unexpected flurry of positive activity in the January window, we're going to have to get to April with the squad we've got.
