Tavares has been good, don't get me wrong, but I'm not devastated at this news. I'm certain that he wouldn't have been on the first three pages of Okon's wish list had he been recruiting in the off-season. Faty wouldn't have made the first ten pages. Maybe we thank them and let them go home to France? We would then have two free foreign spots.

Rose looked very good on Saturday. The two CBs have gone OK too, so I think it's time we back them full-on to be our front line guys.

I'm not sure we desperately need a #10 - I'd worry that we'd be trying to play through him rather than using what are our real advantages - devastating pace on the flanks. And when the ball comes to the #10 the lines are going to be closing up tight when what we need is to hit broken defences at speed.

When we played 11 v 10 on the weekend, I couldn't help but think that Ferreira was completely wasted where he was. He had no idea what to do and if anything was in the way. Pain was sucking in the big ones so I'd have had him off for Fab and then pushed Powell forward (or swapped Powell for Bingham) and go balls-out 4-2-4. Push behind the line and play loads of early balls, turn 'em and burn 'em as much as possible. Not long ball stuff, just the 20m pass in behind. It's how our goal came about and with some better execution and commitment to runs in the middle we really might have had several more.

When you've got that much pace on offer I think it's nuts to try to force ourselves to play with a #10.

We desperately need a number 10 to link with Roy, spread it wide or play it back to a supporting middle. He is the missing link we need so badly.

Rose did ok but is a big step down from Taveras ATM.

The CB pairing is pourous. We need a genuine starting 11 CB. These guys are often the Captain and the organiser of the team.

You know what I find *super* encouraging about Saturday? We mixed it with a side that's better than their ladder position indicates and we did it with a super young side:

Izzo 21
Roux 24
McGing 22
Ascroft 21
Galloway 21
Berry 19
Rose 18
Buhagiar 18
Powell 25
Pain 23
O’Donovan 31

6 players in that line-up are still eligible for NYL.

We lost 4.1 to a side with 10 men that had only won 1 game all season.
Reality check please.

No way are Ashcroft and McGing good enough to be our CB's if we want to be successful. We need experience at the back.
We absolutely need a PZ type.
Ashcroft and McGing can fight to be next to them. Ashcroft had some horrible passing errors but the two have improved.

I liked Rose and he is calm and great passing but he needs to be in Monty's role until he puts on more muscle. The CB's don't trust him like they do Taveras. Taveras is a lot better than Rose and is the anchor to our team. If he is gone we need a replacement in similar ability and age. Rose size lets the attack nip at the ball as Taveras could use his size to hold them off. This is a major difference and very important.

We absolutely need a pure #10. Nico Martinez is amazing. We are absolutely one dimensional. Berry makes good runs and gets in good position in the middle but they just aren't ready to use that properly. Your 10 can still be used to hit the wings just gives an extra angle instead of the up the line ball from the backs every time.

Just need a class spine. We have everything else

You watch how far we fall in the next couple of weeks with this team who is last years with a new and improved left side. We won't be TW bad but it won't be what we have been building to. WSW is building but they did dominate us just like they did Roar without great stuff around the penalty box and they will be a top team if they can fix that.
Our chase for the 6 might just fall away over the next couple of weeks.

This is also the time of year last year where the other teams kicked it up a gear and we got lef horribly behind.

Sadly......absolutely spot on!

Great prospect and i'm glad we signed him but we need an injury replacement now. We can be smart and sign a player that can play DM & AM. Rose can fill Tav's spot with Monty's help and we get the 10, blind freddy can see, we need.

Trent Buhagiar confirms future with Mariners

MpQl2E5.jpg

The Central Coast Mariners are excited to announce the contract extension of local attacker, Trent Buhagiar who will remain a Mariner until at least the end of the Hyundai A-League 2018/19 season.

Buhagiar, who has played the entirety of his football career on the Central Coast, has lit the Hyundai A-League alight since signing his maiden professional contract in January. This was followed by a contract extension in May that ran until the end of this season which has now been extended until 2019.

In addition to the 18-year-old’s commitments as a full time footballer, Buhagiar also balanced his studies at the International Football School where he recently completed his Higher School Certificate.

The Umina Eagles junior climbed the tiers of local football before stepping up to Central Coast representative level and became the first of hopefully many players to sign a professional contract from the International Football School.

Capturing the attention of football fans across the country with his blistering speed, Buhagiar is believed to be one of the fastest players in the competition that earned him a call up into a Young Socceroos training camp earlier in the year under then coach, Paul Okon.

Okon now has the luxury of working with Buhagiar on a full time basis and has rewarded the pacey winger with a contract extension.

After signing his contract extension at the Central Coast Mariners Centre of Excellence, Buhagiar said that the Mariners is the best place to develop as a footballer and also thanked the fans.

“The team is looking great at the moment so I’m really excited to sign a contract extension,” Buhagiar said. “Paul Okon is a great coach with a great style of play he is incorporating into the club which suits my game well.

“At the moment the Central Coast Mariners is the best place for me to be, this is my home town and playing football here is a dream come true. I’ve been able to develop my game here over the last couple of years and hopefully I can continue to develop.

“Going to the International Football School I have been taught that anything’s possible and if you put your mind to it you can always achieve it but it is hard to believe that I have signed a new contract with the Mariners and hopefully I can give more to the club.

“Obviously if you know you’ve got those extra couple of years in the bag you can just focus more on becoming a better footballer so I am happy that I can do that now and keep developing.

“Competition for places is always a good thing, fighting for your position keeps you on your toes and playing your best football and that’s what I have with Fabio.

“The fans are incredibly important to the club – it’s a family club and they’ve done an incredible job this season,” Buhagiar said. “They continue to turn up in great numbers and it feels great to play in front of them,” Buhagiar said

Okon said that re-signing Buhagiar reaffirms the club’s commitment to signing and retaining the country’s best young players.

“I am delighted that Trent has decided that this is the right place for him to continue his development by committing to the club for two more years,” Okon said. “We’re very excited about what Trent has shown so far this season and we are confident he will continue to improve in our environment.

“Trent’s re-signing shows the club’s vision and intent of giving young talented players an opportunity,” Okon said.

...their third was a deflection, their fourth was as we were pressing hard to get back into the game and we hit the post twice.

It's very easy to look at the superficial, but you look at WSW's performances this year where they've often been the better side and gone unrewarded, and you look at the fact that had we gone in at the break level nobody would've thought it undeserved.

Look at the fact that we had tonnes of ball and got stung on the counter in the second half and you see that we're not far from that standard at all.

As for blind Freddy, he doesn't actually watch football, he just goes off common knowledge and accepted wisdom and shouts it long and hard. He's not always wrong, but when he's right it's by utter accident.

Wombat, I think I have a new nickname for you.

Blind Freddy did not watch much football, he was a very keen punter who lived in Surrey Hills in the 1920s. "Even Blind Freddy could see that" was thought to have come into common usage after race goers who were arguing about a close result would use the term to back up their point of view.

Since Buhagiar's extended his stay, I think there are 16 players whose deals expire this year (as far as I can tell):
  • Jake Adelson
  • Kwabena Appiah-Kubi
  • Josh Bingham
  • Jacques Faty
  • Fabio Ferreira
  • Matthew Fletcher
  • Scott Galloway
  • Paul Izzo
  • Brad McDonald
  • Nick Montgomery
  • Ivan Necevski
  • Michael Neill
  • Roy O’Donovan
  • Jacob Poscoliero
  • Storm Roux
  • Mickael Tavares

Okon has only the following players on for next year or beyond, and there's not a lot of money tied up here:
  • Harry Ascroft
  • Adam Berry
  • Trent Buhagiar
  • Jake McGing
  • Connor Pain
  • Blake Powell
  • Liam Rose

Quite a few of the off-contract players would be in doubt, you'd think. I can't really see us keeping any of:
  • Kwabena Appiah-Kubi
  • Josh Bingham
  • Jacques Faty
  • Matthew Fletcher
  • Brad McDonald
  • Ivan Necevski
  • Michael Neill
  • Mickael Tavares

I just don't think they're likely to fit in the broader plan for the next three years. Only Tavares looks like a nailed-on starter, and if he's a package deal with his cousin the value has to be assessed as a package. Seems a bit of an iffy deal to me.

But I wouldn't expect much movement in the short term, at least not until the TV money is known. After that point, I reckon Okon has considerable cap space to play with. If Fab and Monty get their citizenships in January (as suggested on here a number of times), they are much easier to keep too.

He needs to keep us looking decent this year though to be able to sell his project for the coming years, but I think it'll be a rare opportunity to really shape his own side. He's already locked away Rose and Buhagiar (two 18 year olds), he's got good contacts from the Young Socceroos/Olyroos setups so I'd be unsurprised to see him snapping up players around the 18-23 age group most of all.

The advantage is that they'll generally be cheap and (as our development pathways keep improving) be both technically and tactically sophisticated so they'll leave plenty of budget/cap for mature players and they'll be able to fit in around them.

What a crock of shit!
They should have had 6.
They also hit the woodwork.
We did nothing with the ball we had.
2.2 at the break would have flattered us a little but would have been great.
What happened in the 2nd half was horrible and got worse when they went down to 10 men.

If you think we don't need reinforcements or are simply "excited" by the fact we were forced to put out a youth team....then Dibo i have a new nickname for you.......and the second part of the word is head.
