SBS reporting Holman could be looking at joining an A-League team at 31 he is still young and he had a huge engine when playing for Australia could be decent signing a no nonsense box to box midfield player with IMO a reasonable amount of skill...

63 national caps could be a good marketing point as well...

He would still command a hefty fee and would have to be a marquee. Interesting, listening to MC on the podcast and his thoughts on a marquee. I'm not sure than any Australian bar Timmy would add the type of uplift or attrract the sought of sponsorship he would be after and I doubt that Timmy will ever play in the HAL That said I think Holman would fit into the ethos of the speedy hard working team and would love to have him here.

MC is also after sponsorship for a marquee. That in itself means a household name, at least for the football fan, with crossover into the generic mainstream sports fan. To my mind that means ex EPL.

Difficult for a small club with an inexperienced coach to handle a big name too. More than ever would have to be the right fit personality wise.

Not in a position to defend themselves publicly?

See PFA
See Player managers

FFS more column inches than anyone else.

Right. So the PFA and their Managers have come out and told the players side of the story? I haven't read that, please link me to that... Caceres manager has come out in the press because he needs to find a new club having been told he's up for sale. That's kinda his managers job.

Or are you talking about the PFA taking issue with the players being paid late / superannuation not being paid at all? How dare the players be upset for not getting paid, I know all of us would just suck it up in our respective work places...

People stating the players are actively seeking to get out of their contracts is so far off the mark its not funny. I'm not suggesting I know the ins and outs of the situation but I know that is completely false. In fact, the majority of the players are devastated by the news they're no longer wanted.

Anyway I'm fighting a losing battle, I think it's great people are so loyal to the club and will believe anything that's fed to them.

So first off, this time around, the issue has "only" been with late super, not actually getting paid... No problem in them being unhappy about it but...

A) They were actually paid before the deadline... It's not pretty but no rules were breached
B) The PFA made a statement that Adelaide, Brisbane, Jets and CCM were close to being in breach... In their statement they put forward that all club had put forward a statement saying that the money owing would be paid, but they were really concerned about CCM - this is in spite of CCM having made the same statement and actually having a history of being true to their word in these sorts of situations.
That sort of thing tends to lead to people feeling targeted.

People stating the players are actively seeking to get out of their contracts is so far off the mark its not funny. I'm not suggesting I know the ins and outs of the situation but I know that is completely false. In fact, the majority of the players are devastated by the news they're no longer wanted.

The thing is, by all accounts, the club didn't tell them that they were being cut lose... If they did we wouldn't have an issue... The whole point of this argument is that Caceres has a-year-and-a-half (I think) to run on his contract and he wants out of it...
He was pulled from the team after rumours started circulating that he was looking to go to Arnie or someone else... The whole thing about him potentially being sold/swapped, only became an option after the club was pressured to provide a response, after a couple of days of rumours flying around.
In that, what they said was essentially "we don't want to get rid of him for nothing, but if someone was to put in an offer we'd consider it".
That's hardly unreasonable... Indeed not only has that exact attitude been one of the points of pride for the club in the past, it's been a recruitment tool... "Come to us and we promise, if you get a good offer that'll further your career and make us a little bit of coin, we'll let you go, rather than argue about it".

For Fitzy, my perception is different again... From the sound of it, he was at least a potential for the bench on NYE - it's not even like the club's setting him loose in any sense right now.

Anyway I'm fighting a losing battle, I think it's great people are so loyal to the club and will believe anything that's fed to them.

It IS great - the thing is though... This isn't exclusively about loyalty... That would imply that none of us would be able to see any issues here... The real thing is that I - for one - just can't make your view of it add up... It would imply that the club is chosing to sabotage itself, rather than try to make money... I might not be Charlesworth's biggest fan, but I also don't think that he's particular keen to loose money - especially not after having listened to the latest YA podcast.
Combine that with discussions having been floating around here for months now, about Caceres just not looking that engaged etc and you might start to get a sense of where we're coming from.

Ultimately, I think the thing is that what I've seen of these arguments, around letting Reddy and Bosnar go as well, seem to come back to a frustration with us not having adequate replacements for them... I don't think that's a reason to keep someone on, if they're sabotaging the team in some way... It's not all about their physical abilities - how they play with the team is at least as important.

Nebakke, I don't necessary agree with what you've said but you've said it well mate. Thanks for the input and I'll take your points on board.

At the end of the day we all want the same thing, I just personally don't think the way the club is going about it in the right way. Hopefully I'm wrong though and we get success!

Manchester City have agreed an undisclosed fee for want-away Central Coast Mariners play-maker Anthony Caceres, as he prepares to join compatriot Luke Brattan at the Premier League giant.
By
Dave Lewis
Sources in Manchester have confirmed a deal should be concluded by the weekend, making the 23-year-old the club's first signing of the January window - and offering a move beyond his wildest expectations after interest from Sydney FC, Melbourne Victory and Western Sydney Wanderers.

It's believed there is a release clause of $500,000 in Caceres's contract, but that in the light of his determination to get away and the Mariners' desire to move him on and sign a striker, the City Football Group will pay less than half that figure.

It has been speculated that Caceres will initially be loaned out, or will simply train with City in the UK, before ultimately returning to the A-League once CFG-owned Melbourne City agree to the sale of sought-after Socceroos midfielder Aaron Mooy, most likely at the end of the A-League season.

With 18 months remaining on his Mariners contract, Caceres has been on the outer in Gosford and forced to train with the youth team after pushing for a realease.

The deal with the CFG, which also owns New York City and has a share in Yokohama F. Marinos, appears a part of a strategy to unearth talent offshore, hone it, and either sell it on, or utilise it at one of its satellite clubs.

That plan has yet to bear fruit yet with fringe Socceroos midfielder Brattan, who headed to the Etihad from Brisbane Roar as a free agent, but has returned to City from a loan spell at struggling Championship club Bolton without playing a single game.

It's understood that City are looking to find him another loan opportunity in the coming weeks as he seeks to kick-start his new career in Europe.

Tony Rallis has been totally disrespectful - calling us Pub Team FC. If he is representing Caceres to the club he is doing his client a disservice by getting them off-side.

interesting additional point - "According to former Mariners A-League coach Phil Moss, the two clubs have agreed to terms, however he has told Fox Sports News there has also been a last-minute approach from a J-League Club."

As long as we get some decent coin for Anthony i'm happy. We have invested time and money into him and deserve a return. Always one of my favourite players but has been ineffective for a while now. Whether that is him or the Club is not important, we just have to move on.

Some great posts.

As long as we get $$$$$$ for our young players. This will ensure we will still be on Central Coast in 10 years.

FFA won't support us the way they(we) are supporting jets.

And only playing 1/2 home games away from home.

Recruitment.

We need a Bresha and /or Broich positional players. A dominating finisher and creative midfield player. 23/25 years.......and sign them to 3 year plus contracts.

We can develope a Mulligan type midfielder.

Wow cheap fire sale. The $500,000 seemed to scare everyone off but now they interested when discounted.

Good business to sell now for a half decent fee. He's 12 months away from being worthless.

The clean out continues.

Will he ever make the CCM boys conquering the world thread?

I'd rather him in Melb City sky blue than SFC

A-League transfer news: Mariners circle two strikers

Thursday, 7 January 2016 -Aidan Ormond @AidotheFFAEd

Mariners coach Tony Walmsley has confirmed rising star Anthony Caceres may be sold but will look to sign two attacking players in the January window, perhaps as early as next week.

“Negotiations are underway with overseas players internationally and domestically. There will be signings in the front third," Walmsley told reporters on Thursday.

"I’m hopeful of at least two signings in the front third in the next week.

“We get bombarded in January with opportunities... some exciting potential but I don’t want to speculate too much.”

However, speculation has surrounded the future of talented playmaker Anthony Caceres, with the player reportedly attracting interest from the City Football Group.

The CFG owners of rival A-League club Melbourne City, New York City in the MLS and EPL powerhouse Manchester City.

Walmsley was surprised to have heard the rumour, but confirmed the interest.

“I know Mike Charlesworth [Mariners chairman] has been in dialogue with the City Football Group.

"And Caceres has got a transfer fee built into his contract.

“And if Mike and the head of the City Group have come to an agreement I’ve yet to be told that.

“If it is [true] what a great opportunity for Caceres to try reach the potential we all think he’s got.

“And I’m sure any deal stuck with Mike will look after the club’s best interest but hopefully it can be resolved quickly we can move into the transfer market and do a great job for the Mariners.”

As for team news ahead of Friday night’s clash with Victory in Geelong, Walmsley confirmed 21-year-old striker Josh Bingham will replace suspended Roy O’Donovan up front.

Keeper Tom Heward-Belle is likely to retain his spot and new signings Francesco Stellar, Trent Buhagiar and keeper Ali Bray should also be in the squad for the clash at Simmonds Stadium.

Walmsley described the pacy Buhagiar as an attacking weapon he simply could not overlook for this game.

Despite the transfer talk, Walmsley did not rule out a return to the first team for Caceres after he was dropped for the Mariners’ New Year’s Day win over Wellington Phoenix and admitted he would be sad to see the 23-year-old depart.

“There’s always a chance (of a return). Whenever contracted players are putting in 100% here, they’ve brought into the division, then they’re always a chance.

“Of course (I’d be sad to see him go). I brought Cac to the club. He came as a youth player and I saw his potential there.”

Walmsley says Caceres has not been at his best in the Mariners’ recent turbulent period having given him the “keys to the kingdom”.

“He hasn’t been at his best of late, I don’t know what happens outside of these walls … we gave him the keys to the kingdom.

“He’s had a platform to grow as a person and as a player and he’s attracted the interest of some fairly serious suitors out there.

“The saddest thing was that he didn’t stay around to finish his contract and see out his potential here if he does go.

“I’m sure whatever deal is struck will be in the club’s best interests.”
