Mariners McGing will play it tough:

Jake McGing is entitled to be more rattled than most, if not all, of his Mariners teammates by the struggles the club has endured this season, but he is talking tough going into the New Year's Eve showdown with Wellington Phoenix at Central Coast Stadium.

Forget the fact he is a 21-year-old who only made his A-League debut this season and is a manufactured central defender, having been a midfielder before coach Tony Walmsley orchestrated the switch.

Don't worry about the elbow to the back of the head Sydney FC striker Matt Simon gave him in last weekend's game, either.

McGing sounds like a guy who knew this season wasn't going to be easy but is prepared to play through the hard times, and even enjoy them, in the search for the good times.

Asked if he was rattled by Central Coast's six straight losses, leaving the last-placed team way out of touch with the rest of the competition, McGing said: "Definitely not rattled. There's pressure on us, because of the losses that we've had, but we've just got to go out and play our game,"

"I believe in what we're trying to do. All the boys are sticking by it. Everyone's under pressure to some degree in a football team, no matter how well you're going. There's always pressure in football, whether you're winning or losing, so there are no extras there."

Critics say the attacking playing style Walmsley favours this season puts too much pressure on McGing and his partner in the central defence, Harry Ascroft, who, at 20, is also very inexperienced. Turnovers, with so many players forward, means the heat is right on in transition.

But McGing said he had no problem with the team's approach.

"It's a learning curve for me," he said. "It's my first season as a professional and I'm enjoying it a lot now. I've just got to keep doing what I'm doing, I guess, and hopefully we get results.

"You can look at it two ways, but the way I see it everyone here wants to play exactly the way the gaffer wants to play, so I'm just going to keep doing whatever he says and go from there.

"I feel pressure here and there, in games, but you're obviously going to get pressure situations in any game, no matter who you are. Our philosophy on football means we're going to attack a lot more, so that leaves us a bit exposed at the back, but I don't mind the challenge.

"I'm still quite confident and I'm still enjoying my football here, despite the losses, so there's no issue there really."

Simon, who was still at Central Coast last season, when McGing was in the youth team there, got a one-match suspension after being cited for his elbow on McGing. The incident happened straight after Sydney defended a corner for which McGing had gone forward.

McGing shrugged it off as another part of the learning process for a young player, saying there are "two" Matt Simons.

"He's a different player on the field to off it," McGing said.

"He's a competitor and he can get a bit angry. Someone pushed me in the back and I went down, so I guess he was thinking I'd taken a dive or something.

"I'm used to some pushing and shoving and a bit of stuff being said up the other end, as a defender on corners and free kicks. It's part and parcel of the game."

Central Coast's 1-1 draw at home against Wellington in round five was close to their best performance this season and McGing said the players would draw on that as a positive going into Thursday night's match.

"We'll have good memories of that game in the back of our minds and if we go about things the right way the result should take care of itself," he said.

"We're going out there with a plan to win the game.

"We're sticking solid in our belief that the process is right and that it will work for us in the long run."

Caceras should look very hard at that game and it will show him that his future with CCM is solely as an AM as we have 4 very young guys who can play as a DM (Mcging, L Rose, Neil and Ashcroft )as well as 2 guys who can step in and make it their position in Posco and Uskok.
If a signing for the AM position comes then he will be bench warming in NYL

Agree EP.
If Caceres comes back into the fold, & that's a big If then as an LFC fan myself I'd say to him .....

"CREATE! Create - Create - Create"

Because your days as a DM are done'n'dusted.

And your days of being assigned to the AM position and then stylistically playing as a DM are also done'n'dusted.

Caceras is still better than all of them as a DM.
A poor mans Carona.

However we are not prepared to play him there. He played well under Moss at the end of the disjointed Arnie/Moss year with Fitzy, Ibini and think it was Duke when we counter attacked with pace with Caceras pulling the strings. However he has never been close since. Although that meant more hitting Ibini early wide more than through balls. Remember Brisbane in Brisbane and Wanderers at home before the semi's. We also had Kim to play 10 if necessary.

Monty owns DM at the moment but Caceras should be near him or in Sydney because he is not showing any signs of being a 10 like we need in the Flores mould.

Also begs a good question is are we to heavy in DM considering we have tried to turn McGing into a CB but he is really a DM.

Fox commentators talking about Adelaide swapping Malik for David Williams with City.

We could use both so high jacking would be a good idea but we don't have much to offer.

Ascroft as well. (was DM at VVV-Venlo b4 coming to us)

Ascroft's effort at DM vs Melb.City, 'man-marking' Mooy out of the game was outstanding. Late in that game he was showing some nice skills on the ball in the front 1/3 as well dribbling into the box.

McGing, Ascroft, L Rose, Sim, MNeil, Posco, Uksok & Caceres - I believe could all fill the DM role if required to.

Your spot-on, that's a heavy list.

Too small I think. Any decent sized central defender would be all over him.
The ball would have to be played to his feet and he'd have to rely on speed to get past a defender.

Caceres is a DM struggling to make an impact at AM. Why try him as No. 9 when we are paying Heff and Bingham to fill the forward roles?
Seems like he doesn't want to be here anymore anyway.
Let the natural strikers have a go in their proper position.

Wouldn't be surprised to see #ThatBoyTrent given a run with the various injury/suspensions we have cropping up, and with the "gang of four" I've seen some mention being on the outer.

Can't agree with most of that Big Al. I like my DM's to be willing and able to run all day, and they need to be strong, both mentally and physically.
Outta left field ..

Throughts on AC up front with Roy looking gone for a few weeks.

my thoughts are that if he's been wanting to play for SFC while playing for us - then id be happier to never see him play in a yellow shirt again.

I'm probably biased but I think Monty is the best DM in the league and our season would be 10 times worse without him.
This season he has made himself a Mariners legend. In my book anyway.

No problems but the Arnie/Moss Caceras who played further back was that player. Not highly physical though.

Caceres.

We cannot give up on a talented player who may deliver us 200k in overseas transfer money and a future sell,on percentage.

Just because he is out of form last 2/3 games.........and clearly pissed off coaching staff.

And every player who is not playing will hate the coach!

We should never be reducing value of a young players.Just dosnt make sense.

I'd be surpised if cac has spent long wanting to go to sfc - he's had a lot of first team football with us which based on form he wouldn't have gotten elsewhere. Not to mention his history with us, you'd think there'd be some history and sentimentality built up.

At least you'd hope.

I don't think this is about a patch of poor form. I just don't think he has been able to get out 4th gear and deliver what the team needs from a 10.

As to why the coaching staff is pissed at him, well I don't know exactly. And if anyone does for sure then I'd love to know, but you have to think the fact that he's clearly been having private talks about going to Sydney had to do with it. In which case, this is not really about "us"giving up on "him" is it?

GRA, for a talented player breaking into the HAL early, I think at 23 he'd probably hoped to have gone OS by now, or at least around now. So when your team is under performing, two years in a row, I think both he and his agent would be conscious that his value and prospects are diminishing, from that, a move to a club with more funds, bigger profile and better roster, with a coach you admire and have a good relationship... I think it makes a lot of sense. I understand it and can even empathise with it if I take my Mariners hat off.

But as I'm not taking my mariners hat off for anyone. Ever. Imo, he hasn't performed, was shown a lot faith, and is now looking to abandon ship because we're in the storm.
