I'd replace Cass with Sim.

Shuffle it how you will the Fitz Cac link is not effective and it's had more than ample time. What's the point staying stuck on repeat?

Liam Rose looks promising and should continue to get his chance to develop I think, so pair him with Monty again or otherwise as FFC suggests, try Uskok or otherwise play Posc alongside Monty - who I think it is a mistake to be leaving out of our 11 at present.

IMO two screeners suited us not for just being tighter defensively - but because our full backs like to - and are very capable of getting forward. And as we're doing all our attacking via the flanks in any case - it makes sense to be able to overload the flanks but without also heavily exposing ourselves to the counter like we mostly have been.

Sims a tough one, deserves to start based on form, if persevering with current structure, Sim for Cac is worth a try, but these kind of changes take time to gel.

Re Izzo and our back line FFC. Yeah it's a fair point. Heward was great the other night and it is exciting to have an 18yr old debut so well. Anyway, at the very least he'll get another 90 to stake his claim.

Google translate...

"Still unanswered is the question of how it will go with Ivica Olic on. The Croat is allowed to leave the HSV , also tends clearly to a change . But where? The interest of US club Seattle Sounders is deposited , also in Europe creates opportunities . Apparently for " Ivi " happening now on another , delightful variation . According to information of " Fox Sports " has Australia's Table taillight Central Coast Mariners Olic on the list . There, the Croat could gather important match practice to be appointed to Croatia's European Championship squad . The problem : The Mariners are already ten points away from the play-off places , Olic ' season could therefore already ends in mid-April - quite early . The beginning of the new year is reckoned at HSV , which is always held by Olic ' consultant Gordon Stipic to date with clear tendencies."

Hasnt Fitzgerald been playing on the wing though? Perhaps with 2 attacking threats in the middle of the pitch will free up Donovan to score goals.

Usually, though he was central a fortnight ago. and narrow diamond days aside - Fitzy still often tucks in, so we have seen their combination in the mids a thousand times (watched it since youth days) and enough to know that tinkering with their field position is unlikely to have much of an impact at present as the problem has not been position related imo.

Re O'Donovan being freed: That Requires other players consistently drawing defenders. Cac and Fitz deployed as they are should have been just as effective at freeing him.

Austin and Fab same time will help - and a second striker is the most obvious option to help free Roy.

I think Roy does a good job of getting free - but he needs it on the ground, central and the earlier the better - whereas most of our early balls have been aerial and our on the deck stuff much too slow to see him find space.

Which is why when he finally had those two on ones in exactly that way and he missed them it was a bit depressing. But the lack of practice may have been a factor o_O

I'm struggling to see how we make our existing shape work. Against Newcastle we looked great when we went at them. Maybe we try for a bit of that.

-------------- Heward-Belle ------------
Roux - Poscoliero - Ascroft - J.Rose
----------------- Monty ------------------
Ferreira ------------------------- Austin
--------------- Fitzgerald-----------------
-------O'Donovan - Heffernan -------

In defence, it ought to crush down to the old-style Mariners deep-block 4-4-2

-------------- Heward-Belle ------------
Roux - Poscoliero - Ascroft - J.Rose
Ferreira - Fitzgerald - Monty - Austin
-------O'Donovan - Heffernan -------

And FFS, just do the simple things right.

Work hard in defence. Make our midfield an unpleasant place to be an opponent in possession. Don't be afraid to make a tackle now and then.

And in attack, make supporting runs, move the ball quickly, pass to targets, shoot on sight.

We're in a poor position, but we're capable of better.

In that case, Caceres in particular might be in some bother. Can't understand where Sim is though for this game if attitude is a key criterion. He's busted his arse for the badge every time I've seen him this year.

Ray GATT is tweeting about another training ground incident. Hope it is something out of nothing but fear it may be sim related. Not a big sim fan but agree he has probably been one of our best last two run outs

There's a particular problem that if you're the most interesting story you get in print - we're very interesting at the moment, just not very fun.

Mariners skipper defends owner Charlesworth:

gettyimages-497088796_0_zpslh6f2bve.jpg

Central Coast captain Nick Montgomery has thrown his support behind the embattled A-League club's owner and chairman Mike Charlesworth, branding criticism of his approach this season as harsh.

Charlesworth, coach Tony Walmsley and the cash-strapped Mariners at large have come under fire over numerous issues including their unfruitful attack-at-all-costs philosophy, the controversy surrounding goalkeeper Liam Reddy's dismissal and the requesting of players' phone records over an alleged tactical leak.

But Montgomery, who has been at the last-placed Mariners long enough to remember far more successful days, jumped to Charlesworth's defence.

"I think it's harsh," Montgomery said.

"Obviously fans want the team to be winning games, but look at Newcastle last season, and the FFA own them now. Brisbane have had problems, we've had problems in the past.

"Mike's come in (in 2013) when we were virtually going out of business, probably about to be handed over to the FFA.

"Now he's building a complex at the training ground, he's cutting the debts.

"With that, we've had to cut the wage bill and bring in a load of young kids, try and build them up for the future and again make this club sustainable.

"So it's pretty harsh. Mike's a good guy, he's working hard on and off the field with (vice-chairman) Peter Storrie to try and achieve what we want.

"It's going to take time."

Central Coast's money issues are no secret.

Reportedly spending the minimum 90 per cent of the salary cap, they are struggling to make ends meet - and to pay off superannuation owed to some players by the December 31 deadline stipulated by the new collective bargaining agreement ratified by the players' union and Football Federation Australia earlier this year.

Though the club insist they're on track to get it done, Walmsley has admitted there's little room for movement when it comes to signing reinforcements in the January transfer window.

However Montgomery believed the club was on the right course.

He admitted 2015 had "not been great" results-wise, they have five wins in this calendar year, but put some this season down to "horrendous decisions" against them.

Central Coast will attempt to turn around their 11-match winless run when they host Wellington in Gosford on Thursday night.

"We've played some great football this season," Montgomery said.

"We haven't got the results we wanted but now it's time, with 15 games to go, to try and get up that table, we need to start picking up points."

He's doing an admirable job as our Captain this year, facing a much harsher task than what Hutcho ever had to face.

The pitch-side interview with Rushton after the Syd game, combined with his getting stuck-in & 'leading by example on the pitch' , is the epitome of any great leader.

He makes you feel proud to pull on the Yellow.

Mariners skipper defends owner Charlesworth:

I have to admit, it's an interesting - and positive - circle that he creates for me, emotionally.
I see Monty as one of the few players in our team - indeed across much of our league - who can speak with some authority of what the 'real, competitive' football world looks like compared to our league...
I mean no slight of the A-league here, but he's one of the few players who's played in and around one of the biggest leagues in the world, consistently.

That means that I sort of tend to keep an eye peeled in his direction, whenever I see yet another person one 442 or elsewhere, comment on perceived unprofessional approaches going on in our league.
On a whole, I see him as a relatively unbiased observer... In the sense that I don't doubt his commitment to CCM, but I also think he could get away with retiring or playing a couple of seasons in Malaysia or something, if he decided that everything here was sh*t.
While he's also our captain, he's commented on plenty of things that he could've easily gotten away with not commenting on... As a result, I tend to figure that if he has something to say, it's because he actually feels that it should be said.

So - whenever he comes out in defence of MC, TW, Hutch, The club or whatever - it tends to mean that I start reevaluating my views and comments... I think he's ultimately one of the prime influences that hasn't had me completely join the #MCOUT in frustration, months ago.... So it's always sort of nice to see these sorts of interviews with Monty I think... I just hope that he's right.

If the rumours about players being left (Cac, Sim, Fitzy?) out are true then I'm excited to see what happens in midfield. We've previously had Rose and Roux push up but I'm wondering if we might end up with more new faces in the middle. Not to mention Fab & Austin both starting either side of Roy up front... I'm quite hopeful.
