Mariners Squad - HAL 11 - 2015/2016

I still reckon the scum will work their socks off to retain their spoon.

Can honestly not see them winning another game all season.

Miller is a good coach but he has a worse squad than us.

Leonardo is gone for a long time (knee apparently) The Korean is off as well.

They are royally screwed. Just be patient, their ambition to always be worse than us will prevail

We just really need to beat them at home twice in order to get over them. Last game of the season could be a battle to avoid the spoon! Something to play for at least, and we should get better as the season progresses.

Fab fit and Ferreiran to go

The Central Coast Mariners have been gifted an early Christmas present with news that attacking dynamo Fabio Ferreira has returned to full fitness ahead of their clash with Sydney FC.

Ferreira, who returned from a hamstring injury off the bench in his side’s 1-0 loss to Brisbane Roar on Sunday, believes he’s fit and ready to put in a full shift for the cellar dwellers.

“I’m hoping so, but it’s a matter of what the coach wants to do but I’m happy with anything,” Ferreira said.

“Nobody wants to be injured and out, but now I’m back, I just want to keep fit until the end of the season.”

The midfielder, who has scored two goals so far this season – both against Perth Glory in round one – has no illusions about what’s needed on the park having let a point slip against the Roar.

“Obviously it's disappointing we didn’t win, we need some wins,” he said.

“Everybody is positive, even though the results aren’t going our way, we have to keep fighting you know and keep playing.

“So I think everybody is positive and ready for the next game and to get three points”

With two matches in five days over the festive period, Ferreira believes a win is just the tonic for the Mariners woes as of late.

“I think (to get three points) it’s good for the mentality and good for the ladder,” he said.

With an eye on a starting berth against Sydney, Ferreira hopes that he can be a vital part of revitalising the club’s flagging season.

“Now I’m back I’ll be playing, trying to be as good as I was before, creating goals and chances.”

Tis the silly season that's for sure.

Mariners leave door open for marquee signing

The drought of big name A-League marquees may soon be at an end with Central Coast Mariners allegedly in the hunt for a household name.

It’s been a long time between drinks since a marquee graced the yellow and navy but manager Tony Walmsley revealed the club was definitely in the market if the conditions are right.

“In all seriousness, speaking to the owner Mike Charlesworth, there is an intent to bring a marquee in here,” Walmsley said.

Mariners fans shouldn’t expect a big name overnight however with Walmsley aware of the well-publicised finances of the club.

“Whether cash flow allows that in January, I would say it’s unlikely,” he said.

“But you know if it’s the right person, the right time, the right price, commercials can support that, then we’d love to do it.”

Despite this Walmsley admitted the club did have one eye on the global market for any attractive propositions that may surface.

“We do have the fishing net cast globally and one or two fish floating around, so we’re going to keep pursuing that and seeing where that takes us.”

The club will however turn its focus to the Boxing Day clash with Sydney FC with the side in dire need of points, finding themselves adrift at the bottom of the table by five points.

“Boxing Day games have always got a little bit of extra excitement,” he said.

“You know with it being Sydney FC… close to home… local derby… Arnie… the whole works, we know where we’re at, we know the situation we’re in.”

Walmsley is happy to come into the match with the underdog tag and hopes his side can finally reap the rewards of their labour.

“I guess with no expectations results wise people will be expecting Sydney FC to win at home,” he said.

“For me it’s about what a great opportunity that is to finally get something out of the game for all the work that the boys have done so far.

The visitors were unlucky not to get more out of their round four clash with the Mariners after nearly holding out with 10 men, before a late show from former striker Matt Simon sealed the win for Sydney.

Having been part of the Central Coast football department during Graham Arnold’s tenure, Walmsley knows exactly what to expect when they take to the field on Saturday.

“Keeping 11 players on the pitch is going to be a help,” he joked.

“They play a very structured way – the same way that Arnie played when he was here – so no surprises it really is about how we turn up.

“If we can continue with very stout defensive structure that we showed against Brisbane and do better in possession then we’re a chance against Sydney, there’s no doubt about it.”

With a following game against Wellington Phoenix on New Year’s Eve to round out a tumultuous twelve months for the Mariners, Walmsley believes his side has the morale to get a result against the Sky Blues.

“The team that goes out there will need to be fully behind each other, and if they are we give ourselves a chance,” he said.

“We just need to make sure we get the ball into good areas and secure it before we get at teams, and hopefully Sydney can be our first victim for some time.”

You'd hope so.

Can't see how a player can take up X $'s at one HAL Club and then Y $'s at another.

. excuse the hyperbole for a minute ...

given reddy's history he could be drawing on the cap of more than half the teams in the league ... if there isn't a rule in place to counter this - there should be

:piralaugh:

. we can't afford to buy enough experience to even reach the cap floor ... but a marquee is being considered?

. maybe Mike has begun to realise that spending (relatively) no money is a false economy :innocent:

. anyway ... just for shits and giggles (as they say) - how do you think we would go with a decent no. 10 as marquee?

We could do with a marquee cb for sure - But thats unlikely to really excite people and put bums on seats - so surely a marquee 10 or striker. But yeah, i think control/ composure in attack plus the ability to play killer balls is our biggest deficit. And having another mid who can be banked on to score fairly regularly would be amazing.

Really just be nice to see that their is commitment to challenging for silverware again.

Just to point out how quickly things can change. On 8/2/2015 WSW won a game to take them to 7 points ahead of where we are at this season. They were on 4 points after 13 rounds. Just short of 11 months later they are 5 points clear at the top of the table.
