With the pace in our side, a counter attacking style can still be entertaining (Leicester anyone??)

Also allows us to sit a bit deeper and get our 2 banks of 4 organised.

4411 with a genuine 10 and Fab/Austin out wide bombing forward on the counter works for me

Yeah it is very likeable. Probably suits the strengths and limitations of most of our squad better and would let the younger players settle. It's interesting how full license to attack and be entertaining quickly becomes a need for relentless attack and clearly brings it own pressure. I loved TW's ambition in this, just a bit under strength in our squad..blah blah, broken record, blah.

My biggest concern would probably be if Roy could be our Vardy. You need to be clinical if you're a counter attacking side. Which would be pretty novel - given clinical has never been a word associated with Mariners finishing. Roy obviously missed those two 1v1's but still good signs that he got into those positions. I think they both came from turnovers caused by our high press though? Anyway his movement imo is very good as are his engine and work ethic. Can't see it ever suiting Dan Heffernan though. o_O

Really is a lot more enjoyable talking football than club issues.

Our goal against Perth was a counter, through the middle for Roy to run onto as well.

Just before that there was a lightning breakway and we looked amazing.

As for a finisher? That 15 goal striker is a requirement for any squad if they want to compete in this league. Perth going for Keogh will really help them.

I'm not sure Roy has the pace or composure to be that striker for us, ditto Heff. Is bingers quick?

We do need reinforcements badly but we just need to work on the basics a bit better.

We need to bring in a defensive coach.
We need to learn to defend dead ball situations.
We need to learn how to head the ball.
The keeper and team need to learn how to set a wall.

Football is simple. If you are going to allow a player to wander then another player has to cover him.

EVERYONE has to defend as a unit.

Roy sets the example with his defending from the front.

Looking forward to Sundays game.

Re counters, yeah that's promising. We know fab and Austin have the ability to break - But re 15 goal striker - Yeah thats the truth - and theres just no way around it unless your mids are prolific and your backline can be relied to contribute a bit also. Roy is on track for at least getting close to 15 though...

Need to see more of Bingers to be certain, i dont think hes slow, but im pretty sure hes not a speedster either. Probably decent pace once he hits a full gallop, but definitely not in his starting acceleration. Though he's not small, so no big surprise there really.

Im really not sure what his attributes are yet tbh. Hopefully scoring 15+goals a season ;)

* Cac needs to create more. Hoping his combinations will Fabv will bear some fruit

Everyone seems to be pointing this out.

Maybe not with a true #10 - but a second striker that can also create.

What about a 4411 with #ThatBoyTrent replacing Cac and sitting behind Roy. Good with a shot. Can beat players and can put things on for others. If you're good enough you're old enough.

From the Central Coast Express:

"THE Mariners must think
they are cursed at the mo-
ment-superannuation deficits and player disharmony aren't enough it seems.

Assistant coach John
Hutchinson was rushed to hos-
pitalon Monday and diagnosed
with pleurisy, leaving the club's
former captain unwell all week.

Hutchinson had had pneumonia the week before and had been in hospital but was discharged after being on the
mend. But his condition reversed quickly at the start of the week and he is likely to be on a drip at home for several
days once he gets home.

Coincidentally, we hear plans were aleady a foot to bolster the Mariners' coaching ranks. John McLafferty, the technical director of Northern Spirit FC, is in the frame and also former Socceroo Jason van Blerk."

Great to hear the possibility of Johnny Mc coming back to the Mariners. I've known him since the days our kids played together at Wyoming and also managing at CC United/Lightning in the NSWPrem League.

Have much respect for him both personally and for his football acumen.

Recruitment looks as likely as expected
indaily.com.au/sport/soccer/2015/12/22/mariners-all-at-sea-on-recruitment-options/

Approaching the season’s halfway point, Walmsley faces the unenviable task of attempting to heave his down-and-out team from the quagmire of 10 winless matches including five straight losses.
The Mariners, who just three seasons ago scaled the heights of championship glory, are five points adrift at the bottom of the table and facing the possibility of their first-ever wooden spoon.
Despite being handed a licence to lose by owner Mike Charlesworth in favour of playing entertaining football, strained morale has been an inevitable side effect of such an approach.

Compounding the negative feeling is concern the club owes money to players, with Professional Footballers Australia saying some have not received superannuation payments since early in 2013.
Under new regulations, the payments must be made before the end of December or the Mariners face substantial penalties and the affected players can put the club on notice.
The cashflow problems are a product of Central Coast’s shoestring budget that has them spending the minimum 90 per cent of the $2.55 million salary cap.
Walmsley said he’s keeping his options open when it comes to signing reinforcements, but clarified that “we haven’t been actively looking for January recruits based on constraints”.
“We’re looking through the window right at this stage,” he said.
“Whether we can actually open it and talk to people I’m not sure… but we’re keeping options open, we’re talking to (English Premier League development partners) Everton about possibilities there.

“We’ve got a raft of candidates from A-League clubs wanting to offload players to overseas players wanting to come in (but) obviously we’ve got financial constraints at this stage.”
Walmsley thought his youthful side could benefit from the experience of another older head to join veterans such as captain Nick Montgomery and Josh Rose, while he also liked the prospect of “awesome, absolutely gun young players”.
Ambitiously, the coach said a marquee signing may not be ruled out if one were to prick Charlesworth’s interest enough.
“I wouldn’t put a marquee out of the question if the right one came along, if it was the right balance of commercial opportunity versus a big-name player,” Walmsley said.
“Whether it becomes an affordable proposition (is another story, but) something that lifts the fans and lifts the community would be absolutely fantastic.
“Something that these young players would remember for the rest of their lives would be fantastic too.”
