We have had more average duds than gems, for every Ryan or Vukovic there are 10 Trotts and Redmaynes

I did not see much of Trott or Redmayne at games but I saw heaps of two very inexperienced keepers called Vukovic and Ryan.

Who would you sign? Give Reddy another chance not to be a dickhead? Maybe bring Gordon Banks out of retirement. He has heaps of experience.

Who would you suggest?

Well last I heard we were chasing a Czech goalkeeper from an EPL academy. I'd like him over someone who was deemed unsuitable for every other Aleague club please.

You might want to have a look at this

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/watch-everton-under-21-stopper-jindrich-4078745

and the write up on the Everton site

Promising young Czech Republic goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek swapped Sparta Prague for Everton on deadline day in the 2014 January window.

The teenager, who stands at 6ft 4in tall, joined the Blues for an undisclosed fee, putting pen-to-paper on a two-and-a-half-year deal which will keep him on Merseyside until the end of the 2015/16 season.

An Under-19 international, Stanek is yet to make a senior appearance at club level, though he was an unused substitute for games in the Czech top-flight.

Shipwreck is perfectly right to be asking for quality and experienced players.
As to Redmayne he was pretty ordinary, although that save on Sunday was fantastic.

Oh yeah, Uskok, forgot about him. It's all happening!

Asked a bloke I know who is a Knights fan for many years, I asked him what type of player he was, and this is what he had to say about him.

""" We usually played him as a defender, but he is a very creative and versatile one. Can move up into the heart of midfield if need be. Can score plenty of goals too and is very good on the ball. He plays with a lot of heart and is a aggressive player as well which can sometimes lead to some hot headed moments. He is a legend at the club and I’m very happy to see him get this opportunity."""

Sounds like he will be a good addition and i can see him as a DM with his height, aggression and ability on the ball. We lack a physical presence through the middle. Think we will start seeing him before long but maybe more of next seasons plan?

We can ask for experience and quality but i don't think we will get it. :) Money is simply not there this season. Unless Boz and Reddy (when or if he goes) moving on has left us with some, though i guess there was compensation. What i want to see is the club develop the talented kids we have this season so that next year we have a strong HAL ready team with the addition of a couple of players of real quality. Last year should have been a rebuilding year but wasn't, this one truly is.

Was told at the WSW game by a source close to the club that Chris Oldfield will be the the incoming keeper, which if true I'd be happy with.

If money is to be spent on quality and experience I would rather see it spent on a creative #10.

I agree.

Sitting behind me on Sunday were Fab, Tricky and a new guy in Mariner gear. Very tall and foreign accent,( if english can be called foreign)

Does anyone have a basic summary knowledge of:
* current contract end dates,
* number of players, and
* whether we can even recruit very well right now outside the transfer window?

I keep thinking without a little more quality depth we won't get very far or develop our rough diamonds properly.

But MC's willingness to spend aside how much of the above is a limitation...what is realistic if we'd be willing to spend any? Are we still relying on contracts to end so TW can build his own squad?

Another factor to consider is - if the plan is to sell players ( i.e. Caceres in January), and let's say we get offered good money for Austin, maybe Ferriera or others, how much of a 'rebuilt' team would we really have for the next season? I get the impression we wouldn't say no to a good deal.

From the start of this thread...
"2016
Liam Reddy
Matt Sim
Anthony Kalik
Jake McGing
Liam Rose
Josh Bingham
2017 (9)
Joshua Rose
Michael Neill
Jacob Poscoliero
Storm Roux
Nick Montgomery
Anthony Caceres
Glen Trifiro
Nick Fitzgerald
Fabio Ferriera"

Add Uskok, Roy, Austin, Ascroft, Heff... missed any?

My main problem is the lack of an experience CB and a good #10. I think that instead of bringing in Uskok and Heffernan Charlesworth should have splashed some cash for Wilko and Bozanic. The 2 we brought in are way out of season and will not add anything before their contract is out i.e. a bad investment. Spending more on Wilko and Bozanic would have added to the team as well as bringing in a Coastie product and a Mariners stalwart which would have been better for crowds.. It woiuld have also meant better service for Roy and much needed experience. i.e. a much better investment

While I agree with this, it is on the assumtion that either of them would want to return. I'll take off the yellow glasses for a moment...

Both players plied their trade here in what was not a premium brand club like MV, SFC. Fact. They both impressed to a level that got them contracts in better leagues, Fact. Playing in those leagues at a higher level than A league took their game to a higher level, rewarded with Socceroos World Cup berths, moving them into Marquee territory, Fact.

So why would they want to now come back to an team that is vastly less successful on the pitch than the one they left, with a worse budget, and has arguably never been further from a premium brand club? Because they like the beaches?? While I would love nothing more than for players like these 2 to return and help us get back to our glory days, there is much more to this than MC not spending up.

My point is that I think those style players are just aiming a bit high at the moment. A bigger concern for me is a though I had during the week, when was the last time we recruited a player from a competition on par or higher than the a league?? Kim? Everyone else in recent times has been state league ( Sim, Heff, Uskok and others) youth ( MCGing, Neall, Kalic) a crap Asian league (Roy) or junior european leagues (Ascroft, Austin). It's hard to build a squad where EVERY player needs to step up to the week in week out level of play.

. i think this is a very simple explanation of the current situation ... having SOME step up - being properly supported by those with experience - is completely different. balance in the squad is what is missing (and i believe i have stated that before)

. looking back to our premiership/championship winning squads:
  • we had veterans experienced in higher leagues
  • we had players with experience in other similar leagues
  • we had players with vast experience in our league
  • we had a group of talented kids that capitalised on that experience
. now, while we are missing something at the top (an obvious over-reliance on monty) - the thing that i think is really hurting us is the middle grouping:
  • veterans/experienced pros (beyond monty) ... we have rose, perhaps fab - both have been out for injury spells
  • by age ... guys like sim and trifiro need to be filling the roles of kwas/simon/hutch/wilko (the stalwart role) - neither contribute consistently
  • by league experience ... with more that 50 first team appearances each ... fitzy and caceres need to be dominant and/or consistently 'changing the game'
  • without the above ... the kids and/or new recruits will always struggle
. regardless of whether our golden group of kiddies (including ryan, sains, bernie, rogic, musty, dukey) were extraordinary is less relevant than the support they received from their teammates to excel in this league

. i think there are a number of our current crop that would look a lot better than they currently do with that little bit extra around them to help them develop. sure you learn by doing and learn from your mistakes (well hopefully) ... but you learn from the experience of others too

I get what you are saying - but we have not even tried. As far as Wilko is concerned, his wife owns a business with Mrs Hutch, he loves the Coast lifestyle and he has young kids that he has said he would like to bring up on the Coast. Why has there been no approach.

I know he is still looking OS - but he did say if he had the right combination he would like to come back to the A League.

Agree with all of the above, hence why I was upset to hear we signed yet another state league player as our goalkeeper....

EVERY signing including TW has been done on the cheap.
The problem is our squad is very thin and lightweight.
With our best starting 11 me can match anyone but with 1 or 2 of our better players out we are GONSKY.
Charlesworth needs to spend...he is like a slum landlord complaining about about the quality of his tennants.
