A nobody? Disagree there. He was competing against J-League 'legend' Shinji every week for a spot.

I remember going to see the first game we had vs WSW. Bumped into the father of Central Coast product Reece Caira who WSW signed fr Aston Villa. Phil said yo keep an eye on a young Aaron Mooy from Bolton Wanderers youth/St Mirren, played with Reece in the Australian U23's & said he was a clever passer/ballplayer with a cracker of a free kick.

Everything he said panned out. Playing at WSW I think toughened him up physically and they were stupid to let him go, especially after Shinji wasnt resigned as well. His year at MCity, as you pointed out, proved what a mistake the Wanderers made.

We could do with a player like him.

Robbie Slater commented umpteen times last season regarding Caceres, (something along the lines of)........"Caceres shows glimpses of what COULD come, but really needs to step it up a gear for his team, if not for his own footballing future"

Roy wanted to sign him before Poppa had even heard of him....

something to be considered too - it's hard to fly like an eagle when you're surrounded by turkeys. the way our team played season10 was poor, and not like a team. good players second guess themselves and make school boy errors under those conditions. I do expect to see better things from current talented individuals this season

I was just thinking along the same lines.
Caceres career was stunted somewhat under Mossy`s reign.
With an attacking mindset, a fully structured pre-season & with goals set as to the style & movement Walmsley wants, I can only see good things for Caceres.

Rowdy nails it.

And for a fair few of our starting XI, there are half a dozen better prospects elsewhere in the league.

*That's* why I'm pessimistic.

As a proud Dane - I'd point out that prior to the 2010 World Cup we ran rough-shod over the Portuguese team a number of times, in spite of this arguably being the case...
The sum of the players is always going to be significantly greater than the value of the individual player.

It's not that it doesn't matter - obviously - but Berisha being better than Matt Simon for example (I know we don't have him either :( but just for the example ) doesn't really matter in that sense... They'd never really be matched up - they play at opposite ends and their primary purpose is to ensure that their team wins the game. If Berisha scores 20 and Matt scores 5 - in five games - as long as Reddy and Vukovic do their jobs perfectly, both teams could win 5 games...
Obviously it makes a difference, especially if we're tied for points, but again - I think the sum of the team means so much more. :)

So don't be too pessimistic... You're starting to sound like wombat ;) This is the off-season... A time to be excited and giddy about the prospects for disappointment next season ;)

And this is the thing - I don't generally agree with putting all of the pressure on a single point - the team is a whole... I think I've mentioned here before that I tend to disagree strongly, with the knee-jerk reaction that is the firing of the coach after a couple of bad games for example.
However, this is exactly where the coach comes in... As a minimum, the players need to know, understand and be able to execute - the game plan. This seemed like a large part of our problem last year, The plan either being non-existent or poorly executed.
Hopefully Tony can fix that.

Ain't differing opinions marvellous?

In Caceres I see potential but not product. If he's the finished article, then we need to do better.

There aren't that many A-League teams he'd walk into as a starter (where he's up against players like Finkler, Mooy, Carrusca, Brosque, McGlinchey...).

Ditto for Montgomery (who last season would've been up against Milligan, Antonis, Griffiths, Paartaluu, McKay...).

We don't have that many players who *would* displace other clubs' starters.
Good discussions! I think we have half a dozen players who would get into most sides in the HAL but obviously depends on who they are competing against. Monty, Reddy, Caceres,Fabio, Rosey, Storm are 6 that come to mind. Michael Neill when fit i think will become the best left back in the league and go on to great things. Not putting too much pressure on the poor kid. :) We obviously are weak in a couple of areas, fix those and further develop the kids and we should have finals football next season. 5th or 6th would do me with the potential to surprise a few teams.

From the club its from TW giving us an update on his search for players ... his Everton comments are encouraging ..

http://www.ccmariners.com.au/article/news-walmsley-recruitment-update/1u32zxyu16sm1kz2nmo3pwmb7

What's the ‘Gaffer' up to then?
With the Central Coast Mariners’ preparations for Season 11 well underway and transparency a big part in the way we do business, I want to provide Mariners’ members and fans with an update on how we are travelling and what I've been up to over here in the U.K.

First things first! The hunt for top players is the highest priority and the greatest challenge but I am confident in the progress we have made in this short time with a number of talented players being assessed on our radar.

To be honest, some, even many, will be out of our reach at this stage, while others are being viewed in comparison to local (Australian) counterparts importantly because we believe in giving young Australians a chance.

Getting it right won't be a problem, but it's about the checks and balances and we may even trial one or two players in July before finalising.

The two key questions are around value are:

  • Do they add value on the pitch right now and at what cost?
  • Do they have potential to grow their value with us?
A big part of this trip is to get closer to the English Premier League’s, Everton F.C. to build on the partnership foundations laid by Peter Storrie (Central Coast Mariners Executive Vice Chairman) which will allow me to identify potential players.

I spent the day with Joe Royle (Everton’s Professional Development Coordinator) to exchange broader ideas on how the partnership can work both ways. The enthusiasm for the project is clear and has been embraced by Roberto Martínez (Everton’s Manager).

The key questions here are, do Everton have age eligible players who are:

  • Available for loan?
  • In the positions we are seeking to strengthen?
  • Capable to play in the Hyundai A-League?
  • Willing to play in Australia?
  • Possess suitable characteristics to fit the culture of the Mariners?
Identifying players that meet all these criteria is not straightforward. We have identified two players who fit the initial brief and I will be heading to Finch Farm (Everton's training facility) in the near future to watch them in action and to talk more with the coaches.

We need to take a long term view on this, but it's fair to say Everton are in!

See you soon.

I love this so much. Exactly what the City owners didn't do. The Mariners treat their members and fans as actual people not mindless cash drones.

I went to look at a nice house with a pool but can only afford a run down shack.
Looks more promising for future than now.

I don't know may be its just me but I get a we don't have much money now feel but might in a few years feeling.

I like the letter it just sounds like things aren't working.
They are to expensive Or don't won't to come to Australia or are to old.
Lots of reasons why not.
At least they trying and not rushing it I suppose.

On the local side I feel we will be picking what's left as don't have the cash to compete and might be offering one year cheap deals to the scraps

I don't think this is the case. I get the feeling that TW is looking to bring back Aussies from OS and to promote youngsters rather than recycling players.

If we can attract a couple of returning Aussies, one as a squad CB and I hope (but don't expect) Ollie, and add a couple of promising juniors then the two Everton players could plug the areas of most need, CB and striker. Whether they come is the question. If they do come I'm sure they will be successful and fit in well. I think if you are good enough and ambitious enough to be pushing for Everton first team squad and Everton says we want you to play in Australia, and you do it, then you probably pass the no dickheads policy as well as being able to play football a bit.
