I can't think of a reason why he wouldn't take up a visa slot. He hasn't lived here long enough to become a citizen, and he hasn't played for Australia.

Wasn't he naturalised just before he came to us?
Or am I getting him mixed up with one of the other VPL players we looked at?

Depends - he might be signed as a guest player to skip the visa rule. That gives him up to 14 games (including finals) - we've got 11 games left of the regular season after this weekend, so he could play right up to the Grand Final.

Your thinking of Chris Oldfield, the ex-Liverpool Goal Keeper from the VPL that trialled with us & was overlooked [:(] for Bray instead.

He was to gain his citizenship mid January (possibly already has it).

I think you might be right...
Sorry about the spreading of mistruths everyone.

Also, if Luis's stint is successful then we could see him stay for next season

That was my wet dream as well, however article in the Daily Telegraph online had Shaun stating :

"Mr Mielekamp was particularly happy with the feedback from local supporters over recent days.

He said the signing of Garcia was crucial to the club’s long-term planning, with the possibility of the Mariners signing a marquee player every 3rd year."

So that leaves the possibility of next sesson a tad more doubtful, unless Masterfoods or XYZ come on board to go another season.

Here's hoping :innocent:

Read somewhere on here that Heffernan had been told to look for games elsewhere but he felt it was more because of his visa position status than skill. So while Heff hasn't been released he might not be in our nominated visa players anymore or about to be?

Fab has been in the country for a long time, playing for Dulwich Hill before Adelaide. Maybe an Australia Day ceremony could fix that little problem up.

Quick ! Someone get Mayor McKinna on the line.

Fab can do a pre-game 'pledge of his loyalty' like Lawrie did. ;)

Im a bit pissed off over the Heffernan saga as I dont think he has been given a fair go at all!!
Still, he has been training with the boys at Tuggerah, everyday.
For mine we should keep him just to bolster the Yoof team and know we have a quality fill in, should we need him.
Imagine if Matty Simon had been treated the same by Lawrie?
I know when I see a quality Footballer.....so its just the club letting him down with his fitness training from what I can observe.
Happy to be informed differently.

I know what you mean.
It feels like he just got here. I have not really seen enough of him to make up my mind yet.

Scouting report from our man in Hanoi.

Ok. In a street bar in Hanoi old quarter (cheapest beer 17c a go) and get talking to a victory fan who watches a lot of VPL

In his opinion, Tommy U can be the next Ogmonster. Said he was a genuine leader and should have a good career. Reckoned he could score a move to Japan or Korea if he settles well.

Then we spent the next hour rubbishing Heart
Oi rubbish City as much as you like but no hating on the dear departed Heart please.

He's played parts of six games, but he's had proper digs (>20m) in four of them.

For what it's worth, he never looked to me like he wasn't trying or that he was hoeing his own row rather than working for the team, it just didn't seem to come off.

The coaching staff have him at training every day. He trains against his teammates, he plays NYL. They would have a far better idea of what he's up to than we would.

It's telling, in that context, that they've elevated Trent Buhagiar from the NYL squad and that he was in the squad list last week rather than Heffernan.

If the coaching staff don't believe a player is up to it, they don't have to play him in the AL for a certain number of games or minutes to prove it to sceptical fans. They ought to be trusted to do their jobs. Make the call, move on.

It's not nice, but it's the way the business works.

Unless the marquee is signed for 2 seasons....
The way I see it is that Garcia finishes this season & if he`s ok then he plods on for next season, he then moves over to make way for Gerrard who`ll be 37 then...quite simple really:cheers:

You could see his touch was very good right from the get go. Then we heard he's a great finisher. But have it on good authority that he was as slow as a wet week. That can be disguised by lower level fitness at first... then not so much. Makes Djitte look like a speed demon, and look how prolific a 9 he is in a side that has played some excellent possession based football for a few seasons now.

Had no development and on sell prospects and would be taking away from someone like Bingham or now Fletcher who does. I feel sorry for him - but I think the club has done what was sadly in everyone except his best interests.

First part is probably not too far fetched. Luis sounds like he's motivated by being involved and giving back. Hopefully he falls in love with Australia and the Coast and sees value in contributing here for more than a few months and the club/MC feels the same.

We'll probably be able to tell just how likely sooner rather than later. Commercial gains/crowds and the look of him on field... 6 weeks should be a decent indicator.

And Trent didnt make the squad this week. Imagine if your hero Hutcho was judged in the same way.
All im asking for is some equality.

Then Hutcho and Tony can admit they f**ked up.

For me is smells of the debacle that has been CCM this season.......but im cheering that apparently coming stone cold last is no longer good enough.

What's to say he hasn't been treated equally? Players better than him have been released in the last couple of weeks. The only arguable mistake I see is signing him in the first place, and I think that's simply a gamble that cost us very little and hasn't come off.
