Mariners squad HAL 10 ~ 2014/15

According to SST David Williams has asked for and received a release from Melbourne City. Maybe there is something to the rumour.

I'd be thrilled with David Williams. Wanted him in yellow for years. I think if he'd signed with us for the Arnie period, he would have made some serious headway. Of all the other HAL players, has always struck me to be a Mariner at heart. He has a lot of it :afro:

I'll put this out there, while I can still ride on the excitement of us having something that they don't ;)

For argument's sake, if we said you had a (n entirely hypothetical) situation where you had two clubs

a) One of the biggest and wealthiest clubs in a league, which potentially brings with it some prestige in the local market, but performs as a middling club, with little success domestically, no international participation for half a decade and which is relatively new to the thought of having an actual pathway for youth development, in part because they can throw money at expensive, experienced players

and

b) One of the smallest clubs in a league, which brings little prestige in the local market, but consistently has performed better than most, if not all, of the other clubs in the league, has played Champions League football for the last four seasons. A club which also has an established pathway for youth development as well as a successful history of the same, while it also has a smaller budget which forces it to play more of those locally developed players at it's highest levels.

In this hypothetical, you might be a young'un just starting his career. Having just faced the disappointment of not being able to get a Visa to the UK, playing football, currently. You return to your native country and try to work out what happens next. On top of everything else, the coach of club b, has engaged you before you left for the UK and offered guidance and support irrespective of your potential connection to the club.
Now, you are - hypothetically - contacted by this coach as well as the coach of club a, who promises a biggish pay-day, your metier taken into consideration with the potential for you maybe getting a game or two in the youth league this season, as well as the coach of club b, offering a smaller countract, with a relatively high likelihood of first team football.

Which team would You, Hypothetically, pick?

If you pick 'b' - go to page 240, if you pick 'a' go to h... ;)

Obviously this is hypothetical and I haven't got a clue whether Arnie even looked at this kid, I'm just pointing out that we probably shouldn't sell ourselves too short, when it comes to the attractiveness to new players... Sometimes there could be an advantage to being the small, successful firm ;)

This entire hypothetical is purely hypothetical. Any resemblance to real people, alive or dead is entirely intentional.

You have to wonder how much is down to the player agents chasing a quick buck and player development be damned.

Fair point that... Obviously I don't know the first thing about how these things really work, but I do wonder though, how much management is involved for a relatively new, young player like this.
Didn't Rogic only get an agent after he started performing for us, once we started getting offers?

I don't know anything about agent motives either but Rogic is a good case in point, he should be getting playing time. Moving to a top club in any league is going to make it hard to break into the first team and apart from Celtic and Rangers the Scottish league is not much above the HAL imo. A mid level club in the Eredivise or 2.Bundesliga would have been a much better move. He would be more likely to get playing time and the football style would suit him better.
Injury hasn't helped.

I struggle a bit with what to think of the the Rogic situation actually. He played a couple of games, after moving, then he got injured and he's suffered from longer-term injury more-0r-less since. Also, from memory, there was talk of Celtic wanting to try something new, style-wise and Rogic potentially fitting in better then, only nothing much came of it.
However, sometimes I think the Australian footballing public, is also too impatient, when it comes to player progress and development.
I realise that players only perform at their best, for a limited time, but look at the criticism that Amini copped for picking BvB over first-team time elsewhere... In spite of BvB repeatedly stating that they were looking to develop him through their youth system and that they're expecting him to eventually become long-term fixture in the team.
I know that plans change etc, especially in football and I know that lots of players have gotten lost on the pine of bigger clubs, but at least there's a progress plan there.
For Rogic, I'm more concerned that there's no progress plan AND no game time, to my mind there should be one or the other. If Celtic were at least looking to commit to him, we could look at him as an option for the future...

In all fairness, I suspect that Rogic' choice had as much to do with being a bit star-struck as it had to do with managers pushing etc... I know that people laugh Celtic off sometimes, down here, but they're a fairly big European club, and as for quality... The young man in my avatar, kissing the European Cup, played several seasons for them... He is a permanent fixture on the all-time great list, along with his older brother... and he's far from the only good player they've had, obviously ;)

Rogic move was a big mistake for him and I could never understand it. Tommy was a skilful player but you would never say he had a big heart when it came to grafting. Moving to Scotland, poor pitches, freezing weather and not the best football as has been mentioned the not a lot better than the A-League.

Maty on the other hand was very sensible in his move, went to a good league where he would get game time and has moved to the next level.

Not really sure what has happened with Musty as I thought that would be a good move but not sure if it has worked out that well.

Jury is still out re Amini imo.
Wait and see if he becomes a regular starter but if you're good enough you're old enough so why is he not in the BvB first squad? Still playing for Dortmund II in the third tier. Don't know the level of that league but if he was in .2 liga for a lesser team like Leckie we might be seeing him in the green & gold. Top clubs are not the place to start imo. Move to the big clubs when you're the finished article.
Matt Ryan's move was a text book example of what to do*. Of course the fact he has a load of talent helps enormously.

*The case can be made that Club Brugge is a big club which goes against me a bit.

Amini's had injury issues too - missed most of last season, so that would've held him up. He's only 21, and still playing in the BVB.II team in the Regionalliga, where he started the season out of the side, was on the bench a few times and now appears to be a fixture.

Most of the side are about the same age as him, and he's been around the first team squad a bit in the last year or so, so I think his prospects are good in the longer term.

Mane out. Kim out; Major in, Pandurevic in. There must be some big dosh sloshing around still to spend? And where do these two signing leave our Hungarian prospect?

haha :-| there was talk on the previous page of this thread about Pandurevic signing with CCM as a foregone conclusion. But the club announcement today is "post news". Nevertheless it's good news. :)
I was under the impression that we were likely to sign him - though I read that Arnie was also after him - and it's only just now confirmed we got our man.
Moss and the club both had the relationship with him already and I'd imagine he believes he'll get more game time with us, which I suspect is probably true.

Of all the non-consequential things in a period where nobody gives a flying about CCM media because the Asian Cup is the story, this is probably not even the top story for CCM.

Given this, who gives a flying? Of all the teeny tiny little f**ks that I have left over after Asian Cup and the Adelaide game coming back home, this one has to take a number and sit in the queue, I've got nothing left.
