Travis Major goal against APIA.Pace, movement and a cracking finish.

Fast forward to the 13th minute to see him score the winner in the NPL grand final last season in extra time.Another nice finish.

Fair to say he's a solid looking unit as well...

Good run, strength and finish. Have seen Duke score many such...and he's struggling. How old is Major?

I like seeing youth and blooding young Australian strikers in the HAL always excites me as a football fan. I hope he turns out be an absolute gun and the greatest Mariner ever... But the problem is sitting in 8th without a win in 12 - the timing of announcing a state league player as the bolster to your ailing attack after your coach has said maybe one, maybe two players to come in...well...I'm finding it very hard to feel optimistic about the rest of our season. It's not Travis's fault, it's just not great timing as an announcement imo.

I find it hard to believe he will be a better player than Duke or Simon any time soon, and we clearly need someone more accomplished - not less.

There are plenty of problems that can't be solved just by throwing money at them. But quality football strikers is not one of them.

What Mossy said about Micky Neill doesn't bode well. He's got the boot on waiting for the swelling and bruising to go down obviously. But he won't be assessed until the end of Jan. and maybe a season ending operation will be necessary. Tough luck for the young bloke, and tough luck for the team because imo he added a bit to the team, he's good value on the park.

EDITS: I forgot, the BOLD are the 25 & under players. And ** means imminent birthday will up the age. Nick Montgomery contract date fixed. Visa Players noted. Hutch is *not* a visa player.

I have Monty at the end of this season and Cairncross was cover for Brent. With Cairncross gone and Michael Neil out for an extended time we could still sign 3 more players.

The hypothetical ideal for us is that we have a crop of kids coming through to take first team spots and have us just scrape the salary floor on base contracts, but have various bonuses and incentives over the top for kids who do well.

Over time, we extend the deals for the performers and shed the non-performers and replace them with new kids. As the performers develop, we sell them and it helps pay the bills.

At all times, we ought to be looking to receive offers for the players who are doing well, and as soon as we receive an offer that meets or exceeds our valuation, we should (with the agreement of the player) take it. At the same time, we ought to be developing that player's replacement.

In the long term, that probably means that if you're over about 25, you're not going to be with us for long - you're probably asking for more than a kid who might have greater potential to develop and (related to this) greater potential to make a buck for us.

This means that CCFC, Northbridge and Western Mariners are all important to us as nurseries. We would want to add to the footprint as much as possible - look as widely as we can. We really need a Tony Walmsley or similar to be running this operation over and above the coach of the day.

You raise an interesting point there dibo. Obviously "purse money" from competition wins is not included in the cap (WSW) but I would think that bonuses and incentives as part of contracts would be self evidently included in the cap. I guess that's your point, pay the minimum $'s to the kids and then encourage them with performance rewards because we are probably scraping the salary cap base and there's plenty of margin available to do this. Not a bad policy imo.
(EDIT: What is the Salary Cap Base? I can't find any info relating to the actual figure.)

The floor is 80% of the cap, so a smidge over $2m. You'd structure deals so if everyone kills it, we just scrape under the cap. Average contract would be $87k with bonuses up to $104k.
