We are short a keeper, a CB and a striker. I'm happy with the kee
As usual we gloss over the fact we were shit for most of the year and that 2 players stopped (reddy and bernie) us coming in the bottom 2 or 3. Also we were the most negative team in the comp and played the least attractive football.

Having said that we do have a good base but we need a second keeper. A quality centre back. A dynamic 10 (kallic?) and a striker (if we play a formation that gets us out of our own half occasionally!).

To be excited by Neill, Morton, Sim and Cernak is very very worrying when our opponents are signing Villa, Lampard, Moey and Hersi.

In the last few weeks especially against Adelaide and Wanderers we were accused of being too defensive and playing five at the back. I think that it was actually very good tactic and was essentially very attractive when we weren't continually fouled. We used this against Brisbane I think lining up from DM as

---------------Monty
------Caceres----------Hutch
Bernie------Duke-----------Fitz

This team was exceptionally quick on counter and created plenty of chances and looked at that stage ready to challenge for the title.

Against Adelaide we lined up in a similar way and didn't seem as fluid. This was caused by Gombau instructing his play to foul our guys on the break. This resulted in 4 yellows against Adelaide by half -time. When they weren't able to foul with impunity in the second half we looked better and went on to win. This game we were pilloried for playing negative football - but it was Gombau's tactics that caused us to look negative in the first half. Wanderers applied the same tactics the following week but the referee turned a blind eye to their consistent fouling.

I actually think Mossy was trying to emulate the Liverpool front 6 from last year

---------------Gerrard
------Coutinho----------Henderson
Sterling-----Sturridge------Suarez

This year with Wee-Mac hopefully back and a possible further attacker

---------------Monty
------Caceres----------Hutch
Bernie------Duke-----------Fitz

will morph into something like

-------------------------Monty
-----------Caceres-----------------Wee-Mac
Duke/new
fast winger---------Duke/new No 9------Fitz

To use Australian players as an example the fast winger would be similar to Ruka or a new No 9 in the mould of Richard Porta

every season I watch the other teams recruit and think sheesh we're up against it this year. and every season we surpass expectation. because despite the great players other teams go go for we always show up as one of the best TEAMS. so as had been said before - over to you Mossy!
considering he was Arnie's first choice 2IC, he's shown he can make hard football decisions (letting Flores go) and then what he did with a team in a rapid downward spiral I believe we're in good hands and he deserves our confidence and trust, as do the great players in this team.
as pjennings just pointed out he had decent tactics to manage a near disaster, full preseason ahoy with a settled squad and we should have a fair shake of the dangus

post 999 about mariners being negative and least attractive... You haven't been watching the mariners, you've been looking in the mirror!:innocent:

Hilarious response......I can see a future with Jimoen on the horizon!

Attractive......not so much these days.

Negative.....one of the least negative people you will ever meet.

Also truthful......which is not often appreciated around here.

If anyone was happy with our Football last season.....then they are easily pleased.

I'm hopeful for a better style of Football this season.

I've loved the Football played at this World Cup and hope we can emulate some of that adventure this season.

I'll agree with that. Watching the Chile-Brazil game was immense, so much pace and attacking constantly, the first 20 minutes felt like it had more chances that the entire Mariners' season last year.

That said, re: negativity amongst signings, I'll echo what GrA said. Every year it is the same, we sign nobody or no-names, we fret that we're cooked, then we get players from our youth and, bam, we're in the finals again. Even when we play like crap (albeit as Wombat pointed out, we were really saved in particularly by Bernie and Liam) we still make it and show promise.

Besides, Lamps and Villa are only seasonal signings, Hersi is over rated and one dimensional and a flop artists, and Mooy had a shit season last season so who cares?

Cant argue with that and lets hope it continues.

Wont be easy though, it never is I guess. I feel it will be much more difficult then previous seasons with the rest of the field starting to get its act together.

Who knows, I have had similar feelings before and happily ate humble pie. I am expecting a tight table though without any shambolic messes of teams we can skate on by 'a la' steven bradbury this time around.

It really will be tight this year. Brisbane without Berisha will come back a bit. WSW look a bit weaker. Adelaide seemed to come together last year, Victory, Sydney and MCFC have all strengthened.

Well then.

Central Coast Mariners acknowledge Wellington Phoenix’s statement this afternoon regarding midfielder Michael McGlinchey (McGlinchey to train with Wellington Phoenix - Sunday 6 July 2014).

Central Coast Mariners are in discussions with its legal representatives and senior Football Federation Australia (FFA) officials regarding Phoenix’s statement.

Club Chairman and majority owner, Mr Michael Charlesworth, said: “We are currently seeking legal advice to prevent Michael from playing for any Club without our authority from now until 1 January 2015, the day that he is expected back at the Mariners to fulfil his contract.”

Coming back to this:
Dibo, are you sure about that. who is he on contract to?

I will be the first to say I am wrong, but I am told its happening through a legal loophole.
Sounds like there is still a contract in place or else CCM would have made a different announcement.

Dibo. Already done. No contract in place. Dont always believe what you read in press releases. There is a big face saving exercise going on.

This has been handled very poorly by club management.

Let me tell you club is in trouble from a management perspective. You may not want to believe it and I really really hope it doesn't happen but there are massive problems within the back office and management.

Well, what a dog's dinner that is. Nothing good can come of this; McGlinchey is gone one way or the other. If McGlinchey is not under contract then heads must roll within the Mariners' back office.

Does anyone else not think that Arnie is somewhat to blame for f**king us now? If he didn't take Glinch we would still have him.

Seriously letting Arnie go his way looks like the biggest dick around move we have made in our short history.

Yeh no worries mate, go, end your contract, take who you need and if it doesn't work out, Sydney is right there.

Hold on.... It states fairly clearly here:

Club Chairman and majority owner, Mr Michael Charlesworth, said: “We are currently seeking legal advice to prevent Michael from playing for any Club without our authority from now until 1 January 2015, the day that he is expected back at the Mariners to fulfil his contract.”

That he's still under contract and expected back on the first of January, so this would be for him to play with WelNux for the first half of the season... How is the FFA etc. etc. not falling over themselves to stop this, irrespective of anything else? It seems like it creates a fairly obvious loophole in the recruiting system.
I'm assuming here that there's a clause in the loan contract where the borrowing club gets to re-loan him out or something?
