We are short a keeper, a CB and a striker. I'm happy with the kee
In the last few weeks especially against Adelaide and Wanderers we were accused of being too defensive and playing five at the back. I think that it was actually very good tactic and was essentially very attractive when we weren't continually fouled. We used this against Brisbane I think lining up from DM as
---------------Monty
------Caceres----------Hutch
Bernie------Duke-----------Fitz
This team was exceptionally quick on counter and created plenty of chances and looked at that stage ready to challenge for the title.
Against Adelaide we lined up in a similar way and didn't seem as fluid. This was caused by Gombau instructing his play to foul our guys on the break. This resulted in 4 yellows against Adelaide by half -time. When they weren't able to foul with impunity in the second half we looked better and went on to win. This game we were pilloried for playing negative football - but it was Gombau's tactics that caused us to look negative in the first half. Wanderers applied the same tactics the following week but the referee turned a blind eye to their consistent fouling.
I actually think Mossy was trying to emulate the Liverpool front 6 from last year
---------------Gerrard
------Coutinho----------Henderson
Sterling-----Sturridge------Suarez
This year with Wee-Mac hopefully back and a possible further attacker
---------------Monty
------Caceres----------Hutch
Bernie------Duke-----------Fitz
will morph into something like
-------------------------Monty
-----------Caceres-----------------Wee-Mac
Duke/new
fast winger---------Duke/new No 9------Fitz
To use Australian players as an example the fast winger would be similar to Ruka or a new No 9 in the mould of Richard Porta
As usual we gloss over the fact we were shit for most of the year and that 2 players stopped (reddy and bernie) us coming in the bottom 2 or 3. Also we were the most negative team in the comp and played the least attractive football.
Having said that we do have a good base but we need a second keeper. A quality centre back. A dynamic 10 (kallic?) and a striker (if we play a formation that gets us out of our own half occasionally!).
To be excited by Neill, Morton, Sim and Cernak is very very worrying when our opponents are signing Villa, Lampard, Moey and Hersi.
