ccmfans.net is the Central Coast Mariners fan community, and was formed in 2004, so basically the beginning of time for the Mariners. Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

It only takes a few minutes, and joining will let you post your thoughts and opinions on all things Mariners, Football, and whatever else pops into your mind. If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

Wait hang on it’s just for them? What’s the rationale?
Yeah just for them, something about getting established and being new no chance to have loyalty players/other cap exemptions.

As Insert suggested since we havent been spending the cap + marquees its more academic but it does weaken our bargaining position if we were to.

They got 6 visa players
This. But they also put them together at much shorter notice. WU have been able to steadily pick up players since the January window (maybe before?) and don't have to worry about dead wood on their books at the moment.

I can understand new teams getting short term lee way to set up squads. WSW got it, and I have no problem with it.

The issue here is not that the 2 new teams are getting allowances, its that our team has underperformed on every facet of the game for such a long time that completely new teams are a far more attractive proposition than we are. Thats all on us, not the FFA.

To put it this way - none of us really cared when WSW got their allowances, because we were a well run sporting team (sporting, if not financially). We had a great junior system, arguably the strongest coaching staff in the comp, and a very strong first team, with a great balance of experience and talented youth. Players wanted to play here, and would do it for less money than at other teams. We were able to compete and beat the Wanderers that year even with their allowance.

Fast forward to now, due to continued incompetence, these allowances for new teams will have a significant effect on our recruitment process for this next 2 years - why? Because we have allowed ourselves to slip to being a bottom feeder club.

We will probably be WU’s first game so they have a good chance to get a win. At least we are useful. I’m being patient but I don’t like how quiet we are being on all fronts (releases and new signings) compared to every other team. I’m still in for one more year so they better make it a good one or i’ll take a break from being a member if the club lasts after that.

I agree with all of that - and that was why last season was so important. Now that has been stuffed the next season becomes important so that

But really - if we get a good keeper, plus five good visa players, we only need to be looking at 5 first team outfield Australian players that have to be at the level of a top 4/6 team. Do Oar or Clisby fit that description. If they do we are only looking at 3.

Phelan has apparently signed a 3 year deal to be Ole’s assistant. Surely effectively ending his “role” with us.
He can’t do both, not with 100% effort.

Also saw a hilarious rumour linking us with Franck Ribery today via Tony Rallis’ connections. What a time to be alive.

What did he say BG?

. sorry i was so late with the response FP, i know the conversation has sorta moved on (and Pete's post copied below puts things in an interesting light)

. essentially he said that with Phelan 'away' his (Shaun's) responsibilities had had to increase to cover the shortfall ... but he insisted that they were in daily contact

. the cynic in me suggested this (daily contact) meant he had to send in a report card of 'what i did today' which Phelan could read at his leisure, but could also mean as little as 'he is following me on instagram'

As of ~ 3 months ago, the recruitment/contract process started with phelan, then onto mulvey/Monty, then Charlesworth, and then onto Shaun at the end. Based on a press release from a couple of months ago which stated that Shaun will continue to report to the board on administrative and commercial operations of the football club, with Phelan looking after the football department, I’d suggest that process hasn’t really changed (aside from the obvious Mulvey not being here).

. so if you put my notes on Shaun's 'announcement' together with Pete's understanding (and i don't think i am drawing a particularly long bow here):
  1. Shaun reports to Phelan (in his absence)
  2. Phelan then starts 'the process'
  3. Mulvey/Monty .... (/Staj?) get involved
  4. Charlesworth passes his royal decree
  5. Shaun can actually start a conversation with the player
. i reckon the player in question has signed with somebody else before we get to step two ... but if we ever get to step five, the player simply laughs and walks away before we can rinse and repeat with an improved offer

. and unfortunately (IMHO) nobody in that group is properly qualified to run the process - perhaps Monty has the more complete understanding (of the whole process and HAL intricacies) but is still on his training wheels

Whinged his ass off and was a terrible example to the young players during pre season boot camp as I heard it. Leopard, spots I reckon.

But was a very good keeper for us.

He is or was a cock head.

BUT as a player he was an excellent keeper. He was the last keeper that we had that wasn't a joke.

I gave him a spray at the last game when he fist pumped the air when they beat us 3.0 but secretly i admire him as a keeper.
