I can understand wanting more control after Okon but at the same time it doesn't really show faith in the new coach's abilities. While Mulvey was ultimately a failure it feels like Charlesworth is just pre-empting that any coach we sign is going to be a failure. I doubt any other player with Asdrubal's CV would have failed as badly as he did. I am really hesitant to want anyone not actually in the footballing department and managerial experience having any input into player signings. All Shaun and Charlesworth should be doing is help to negotiate contracts.

I think they are,

From what I’ve heard, under advisement from the coaches it’s really been Phelan calling all those shots.

Ah cheers FP, apologies for the misunderstanding. Does Phelan have any real value apart from visa player connections though? He doesn't really know the Australian football landscape and even Joyce with all the resources of CFG couldn't make head nor tales of it. He also has his hands tied behind his back via his involvement at Man U and doesn't have any real reason to care about us. Is it possible that he is doing more harm than good?

I like Keks, but he’s been overhyped. I think a big part of his downfall was he started buying into his own hype, reading his own press so to speak, and I feel his game has gone backwards as a result. So many times we’ve seen him as a bit of a passenger or struggling in NPL2, and that’s not what CCM need right now. He’s gone to Sydney Olympic, and good luck to him, but I’m not concerned about this one.

The club more than ever needs to act rather than talk, we got sucked in by Mulveys words and record and it was our worst season ever afaik. The words no longer have any weight.
This is why I'm happy to be patient not hearing any signing news etc for a few weeks. Actions take strategising and executing, and the Aleague season in full still has a couple of weeks to run.
Signing several quality players needs to be the priority, and for the same reason it shouldn't be a knee jerk rush job

Yeah I agree and can’t be sure how good a job he could do if it was his only job and he was based here. But obviously last season his focus was heavily compromised and it’s impossible to believe he could do the job we need moving forward whilst being at ManU.

But as you’d hope/expect I’ve heard the club are looking at a new TD though so don’t think this is lost on them either.

Informative thanks Pete. I was probably guilty of hyping him based on what I saw for us and a couple NPL games. But if he struggles and goes missing at that level he’s not what we need.

Did he perform horrifically in training or something? On just watching the games he was more than up to A-League standard with potential for more, he definitely deserved a place as a squaddie at the very least. If Hoole gets re-signed over him then we are insane.

It's very worrying that we seem to have absolutely no faith in the youngsters our academy is producing, from this to letting Wales go over a pittance, Gianni Stensness going to the Phoenix, Liam Rose being let go, Buhagiar leaving for Sydney FC, Heward-Belle departing for Sydney FC and Steve Whyte dominating NPL Queensland. While not all of these are directly the club's fault from a negotiating point of view they are from a man management one. We have been consistently the worst A-League side for four seasons now, that should have at the very least allowed us to give some good young players game time and actually keep them. But the strategy that we supposedly set out with at the beginning of that faithful pre-season four years ago has arguably never been actually implemented. Wern't we supposed to be the club who produces young players to sell on? Wasn't the reason Tony Walmsley became our manager because he could promote the youth from inside the club? That never happened, we continue to not show any faith in anyone who comes through our system and we are paying the price for that. We especially don't seem to realise their value when we are negotiating contracts and how much it would cost to the replace them suitably.

Kekeris is the latest in a long line of players who haven't been valued properly by us, and while there will always be youth players who don't make the grade we need to show actual faith in those that have shown that they can. When we find a diamond in the rough we seem to not know what we are looking at and pass it off to whoever wants it. Now is the time to be bold with players from our system, players that have grown up with the club and care about it. Players that can restore pride and the magical "Mariners" spirit. We need our young players more than ever, committed to earning their first professional contract and fighting for pride again, not players just collecting another paycheck.

He never looked the goods at training.

He turned 20 yesterday. What a birthday present.
Was he at the medal dinner?

I hope he gets another aleague side and scores against us just like lachie did. Spitting in the face of Charlesworth/Mulvey.

If Kek’s has been given the boot to make room for these rumoured WSW youth boys that’s piss poor. Who’s next? Letting Miller, Glasso, Nizzy go? Especially with those Nizzy contract rumours a couple months back.
If I was an academy lad I’d seriously considering ditching the club. The writings on the wall as far as I’m concerned. We don’t trust the youth players we’re supposedly developing.
If they’re apparently not upto to the grade when they reach 19-20 then that is 90% the fault of the clubs youth structure imo.

The better youth players get to train with and play against the 1st team.

It's all well and good to say someone like didn't show the goods. But what we're actually talking about here is giving a young guy from our academy a crack. The choice is really, our youth or someone else's youth or a has been that's had 6 clubs. I know where my loyalties lie.
We're talking about squadies. Not starters.
As for believing his own press, you have a coaching staff and should have senior players to manage personalities.
Ultimately if he's a complete James Blunt or doesn't grow well we're in no worse position than we have been already.

The problem with being as bad as we have been over the last few years is we've run out of room for slip ups, I'd be very surprised if the club doesnt want to give our youth a shot but are also acutely aware of our situation and that makes for a tricky balancing act and a lot of pressure. You could make an argument for playing those guys once our season was ruined but we also couldn't afford to do anything other than play our first team because of the exceptionally shitty position we were in. Damned if we do, damned if we don't.

While i broadly agree we are talking about having 2 or 3 blokes promoted from our youth. The problem weve been having for the last few years is a garbage first xi and no depth.
In reality youre targeting 2 blokes for every position which leaves some leeway.

So, Pearce inked until 2021....hope this doesn’t mean Nash the Gash has saved his job

A few of those released Sheffield boys would be excellent pick ups for us. End of.

Jake Wright and Martin Cranie would fill our experienced and high quality CB spot perfectly. Conor Washington would be very good up front in the aleague. Same with Leon Clarke.
Samir Carruthers is a very good versatile attacking mid.

Get onto them Monty/Phelan.

Not sure how I feel about Pearce being re-signed, especially for two years, I hope there are some KPIs we have in there that could allow us to potentially terminate early. To be honest I think there are better young keepers out there who we could secure on a scholarship rather than a full contract, isn't Munford rated fairly highly? It's good to see we are putting faith in our system but has he improved substantially in the past few seasons?

Wouldn't be a bad idea to loan him out to an NPL side for the winter to give him some game time.
