Mariners Squad - 2019-2020

I know we are all calling out for a clinical striker but I think Staj has put together the basis of a very good squad. If the second Korean lad had been able to get back to fitness I would think a certain top 6 side. As it is I think we will challenge for the 6.

-------------------------------Birighitti/Pearce--------
Gordon/Miller-----Gallifuoco/Tongyik-----Fox/Rowles-------Clisby/Hatch
-----------------------Eun-sun/Stensness/Melling-----------------------
-------------------------------------Duric/Nisbet------------------------------
------------------DDS/Shabow---------------------------------------------------
Silvera/Majok---------------Murray/Simon-------------------Oar/McGlinchey

Ideally a good clinical visa striker would round out the team.

Next season Matty and McGlinchey (if they stay) will be on a lot less and free up more funds and Staj may be freer to target someone and Shabows 'potential' may have run out.. I still think Ziggy is more a natural CB and would prefer him to move into the middle and recruit another RB

If we’re doing a deal for Blackwood it has to be done before midnight tonight

Not sure on whether we can sign a free agent without a club anytime or if it’s january if we miss the deadline.

I didn't realise he was only 22. Looking at his Wiki page he is the kind of player we sign.
That is, young, had a few games with the under 20's and 23's and not making it at another club.

Not that I'm aware of. I could read it at home but not at work. The article was basically saying he had the most interest from us but had been offered to others, I think it was Perth and Newcastle and that if a deal was to happen before January it needs to be before midnight. Similarly if Adelaide are bringing in their Chinese defender it needs to happen today.

I wasnt commenting on whether we should or not just sharing the article but my feeling is we don't have enough attacking players on the bench. There's depth around the back line and DM, and we have some options to shuffle around attacking mids to maintain a decent starting line up but that would leave us even shorter on the wings. The way I look at us at the moment is Murray or Simon starting and the other to sub on in most games. Majok can sub on either wing but if we need to pull him in to backup striker due to injury or suspension we dont have any cover. If we were to have a striker and a wing / attacking mid out we start looking very thin on the bench. We start looking at weemac or Shabow.

He's from Berowra and he'd get more game time here. Could do well with our midfield
I wouldn't be surprised if he turned up here.
Wouldn't be a bad signing considering those names bandied about earlier in the thread.
Jonathan Bentke was one. 5 goals in 5 years.

I just saw that on twitter. I'm sure I read that the other day.
Did Pink Lady mention it another thread?
Yes I did - he was signed last week when Silvera was upgraded to a full contract.
He will be a much needed option on the bench - we had no specialist defenders on our 7 man bench last week and Lewis can play anywhere across the back line.

He’s not the clinical striker we need, but he would help bolster our attack and on balance I think strengthen our squad.

Agree with Turbo. Concerned by our attacking depth, especially wide.

HAL just looks too fast for Weemac now - once again looked great in pre season against lesser paced sides - but had no impact off the bench last week so I don’t see him as an attacking substitution.

Shabow can play some nice touches but for the way he likes to play, he’s not quite fast enough, not quite creative enough and not quite skilled/tricky enough to do what others in his position at this level can. Another player who for HAL seems just a bit beyond imo.

Our current squad

2020 - (15)

Birighitti, Duric, Eun-sun, Fox, Gordon, Majok, McGlinchey, Melling, Miller (Scholarship), Nisbet (Scholarship), Oar, Roberts, Shabow, Simon, Stensness

2021 - (7)

Clisby, De Silva, Gallifuoco, Murray, Pearce, Rowles, Tongyik

2022 - (1)

Silvera

23 signed for the season. Average age a touch over 24.

What I want to see in the next 4-5 weeks is the locking in (where warranted) of a number of those coming off contract for more seasons. What I don't want to see is people coming in with 6 months to go a contract and taking players we want to keep. Staj has a lot of decisions to make in a very short time.

For me so far
Keep: Birighitti, Duric, Nisbet, Oar, Stensness
To be determined: Eun-sun, Fox, Majok, Miller, Gordon. I'd imagine Kim will probably be worth more at home and is unlikely to stay at an A league team but see how his season goes. Need to see how Ziggy goes and what our options are around CB and RB, could see him moving over for a more aggressive RB at some point. Might even see Ziggy and GG switch their original positions.
Drop: Weemac, Melling, Shabow, Simon

All subject to change and based on the value it seems we're getting from them. I'm not sure we'll retain all of the CB options we have at the moment so that might point to a mutual release or letting Fox/Ziggy look at other options.

Stoked for Lewis Miller. Better at CB but definitely has the tools to become a good senior level RB.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the possible Blackwood deal. If it involves Melling going the other way, fantastic imo. Would see Nizzy get more minutes and therefore develop. Blackwood does have good striking technique and touch and decent movement but mostly pretty lazy in looking for space and therefore goes missing way too often. That can ofcourse be worked on. I mean, look at how focused Staj has got DDS right now, literally working his c**t off.
Arnie frothed on blackwood early at Sydney but seems like his attitude was an issue.
Then there’s the huge black mark of so little goals compared to appearances. He’s played alongside fantastic creators he should have more goals.
But I would take Blackwood over matty purely based on technical ability and his young age and the fact that his attitude can be turned around so that he works harder, just..
