I think locking down Silvera is a clear sign the club have learnt from the Millar situation last year and are locking down players who have showed good enough signs. I agree Nissy should get a contract ASAP.

Silvera is yet to play an A-League game so a 3 year deal is huge faith but l think he'll be good. Wonderful potential.

Personally I would have given him a 5 year contract.

The tommy one still hurts, so much

It was Staj's decision to let Tommy and Karacan go. They both wanted to stay but Staj wanted a higher ROI. I wasn't happy to see either go but I undertand why he wanted different players. I think, to try and paint the picture you did is fanciful at best, if i'm being polite.

Just another black mark against Stajic and further proof that he is struggling. Decisions like this detract from the good work he has done moulding the squad into something like a cohesive unit. Silvera has not even played an A League game. He ran out of legs in the first full match he has played at top level (admittedly so did Oar, De Silva and Duric), he has shown potential and Stajic consistently reminds us how good he is at training without him showing it on the pitch. In fact his performance against Adelaide was one of the two things Stajic said contributed to our loss - 1 not playing out from the back well and 2 our midfielders not linking well in the front third. No mention of simons send off and no mention of him not using a single sub. One of those subs named couldn't play anyway (Gallifuoco) as he was still injured and unable to kick with one foot. He refused to name Lews Miller on the bench and told him him there was no funds for any more scholarships. Miller was left out of the FFA Cup match day squad and offered another NYL deal on the same day. Two days later Miller informed Stajic he was going overseas to trial and Stajic said no we were going to offer you a scholarship and then flick passed it to Shaun to deal with. Miller still hasn't accepted and may still be off to trial OS. Meanwhile Josh Nisbet who was signed on a scholarship 18 months ago and promised a full A League contract this year is still on a scholarship despite more than proving himself at training, in the A League and in every game he has played. Stajic is proving himself to be tactically clueless and completely lacking in resourcefulness. No wonder we lost Hiariej, O'Neill and Karajcan - all of whom wanted to stay but did not want to play under Stajic. When we look at the players Stajic and Arrarte have brought in - Ziggy, Gallifuoco, Tongyik, Silvera, Majok, Da Silva, Stensness, Birrighitti and compare them to who we have lost - M Millar, Aspro, Hiariej, Karajcan, O'Neill, Paine, Hoole and Kennedy, the only places we are in front are Birraz over Kennedy and DDS over Hoole. We are still giving up soft goals in defence, we still have a captain who is a loose cannon and we are still lacking in fitness. I can only hope that we will improve because of the absolute train wreck we were last year, there is only one way to go.

Pinklady,
Your posts are usually very well informed.
This rates as the biggest crock you have ever posted.

So the bigger question is this,
Are Duric and Kim a more effective duo than Tom and Jem?
Guess we’ll find out this season. Tom missed more games than you’d like in a contract year and went missing at times, when he was on though he was fantastic. Jem I expected to kick on if not with us then someone else here, I thought he showed enough to justify some interest. Since he’s without a club I have to wonder if he’s Troisi’d himself - good player but unreasonably high demands stopping/delaying a signing.

Kim is a sick note - his career shows he plays very few games in a row so we will need cover there.
Interestingly, Jem hasnt got a gig anywhere yet which may tell us something.
We are an unpopular club that pays low wages, we shouldnt have any delusions about who we can and cant attract.

I can't get my head around us sending Tom away because he didn't have enough impact for a foreigner... And then signing Kim who plays even less on record.

We have had a decent amount of quality players like Jem and Tom of-course that would thrive in more well rounded teams.
Even Simon thrived when used in the best tactical way at Syd.

But as the losses accumulate we haven’t had the structure, support or depth to fight our way out of the ruts each year.

I really do feel we have better midfield and back depth this year now with Fox and Stieness coming in.

I just hope if we do get a few losses to start with we do consistently re-evaluate and make sure we stay simple and slowly fight our way back and not be stubborn.

I miss Tommy. Getting consistent starts with FC Emmen after recovering from a knee injury. A lower Eredivisie team sure, but his quality was never in doubt. I think he would have fit in this Stajcic team really well. Him and Duric as a pair would have been very good.

We really do need to get at least four points for the first two games because we then have the bye and Perth and the Plastics away.

I knew mine would be an unpopular post and I respect the opinions of everyone on here - after all we all have the same ambition at heart that is to see the Mariners succeed and continue to be a club that we can be proud of.
I guess my reasoning behind my way of thinking is I do not see Silvera as the massive talent that many do. I have watched him play for many years and he has always been a player with potential that goes missing when things get difficult. I agree that it is good that we have learnt from the Matt Millar situation in not locking down players early and to long term deals. However I don't rate him above either Lewis Miller or Josh Nisbet but he definitely is miles better than some of the triallists and youth players that have been given a chance - Marc Moric, John Roberts, Jerry Skotadis and Dylan Ruiz-Diaz.
Which brings me to another of Staj's stuff ups - the way he dealt with Brandon Lundy. Lundy trialled for a couple of weeks and played in the fairly low key match against North Shore Mariners. He was an absolute stand out albeit in a game that meant absolutely nothing against opponents who fielded a number of triallists themselves. I, and many others left the game thinking we had found ourselves a top class attacking right back. Staj didn't offer him a contract (which is the coach's decision in all cases) but he told Lundy he wanted him to stay on and train full time with the team without payment or contract just in case we needed to sign someone during the season. Lundy never came back for another session. If this is Staj's way of testing someones desire or eagerness to play then it is a very unprofessional way of doing it. If he honestly thought that Lundy would agree to it then that is just plain stupidity. I hope it was the first.

Re Lundy, lot to ask but when you know you can’t justify putting a deal on the table but do like a player, it may be the best you can do. And not meant as a slight.

This is almost exactly how Matty ended up a Mariner under Lawrie wasn’t it?

We are an unpopular club that pays low wages, we shouldnt have any delusions about who we can and cant attract.

This should be stickied to any transfer rumour or recruitment thread that arises.

Give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.”

For we are the Mariners.

Honestly our mascot might as well be a life boat.

We are attractive to players who are desperate because they can’t break in at other clubs or fallen on bad times. Players recovering from long term injuries. Young players with unrealised potential who want first team football now but are unlikely to find it another club any time soon.

We seem able to afford - and thereby be attractive enough - for 2 or 3 decent foreign defensive players.

Apart from that... it’s any loan deals we can swing to save another club some wages, whatever we can scrap together from other teams off cuts, NPL triallists and emerging youth - where hopefully we discover some diamonds in the rough.

So I always find it a bit odd when fans talk about a Troisi or a returning Wilko or Mile and say we should sign them. I mean I get it. But it’s just so unlikely to happen. I was stunned by Oar and McCormack signings last year. Though one was injured and out of form (tick) and the other didn’t even want to play football anymore.

Millar and Aspro are the two biggest disappointments. Both players should have been here for another couple of seasons and the time and energy that went into replacing them should have gone elsewhere.

I gotta say its beyond disappointing that we don't have a striker of quality...

AS for coach blaming tis way to early to comment either way ....

For all our sake's I hope he is brilliant ..

I work in a new office... its a mixed business office with around 8 regulars each day...

4 of these people went to the FFA Cup match... all and I mean 4 out of 4 said we can't score and I am not paying good money to watch Matty be a thug... my business and all these people live in Umina with 3 of the 4 having lived here all their lives...

Shaun if your out there ... no striker is going to cost you big big big time at the gate... maybe say 1, 500 people a game for 13 matches, thats 19, 500 tickets @ say $ 20.00 per ticket thats close to $ 400, 000....

I actually held off buying my membership until we signed a couple of decent players and the club said we hope to sign a quality striker... I assumed you would sign a quality striker and feel badly let down that you have not and depending on the season will effect my membership next year...

It’s not just us that has struggled to sign a 9. WSW presumably have far deeper pockets and a better reputation and took a long time to find someone suitable. Nix are still looking too. I don’t doubt the club have been trying their best. Maybe if MC opens the wallet a bit more we’d have more success luring someone but at the same time if I were him I would be wary of doing that when we’ve performed so poorly over recent years with the money we had to work with. Hopefully the cup run and some decent results can convince him to provide more funds to go fishing in January.

As a counter point I’m glad we haven’t made a substandard signing that we’ll be stuck with for the year or longer. A last minute lights coming on at the end of the night “you’ll do” pick would silence the critics for a few weeks then we’d be worse off. If nothing else I feel like we’re making better choices this season:
