I`ve been a fan of Matty`s for years, mainly due to his fighting spirit though not the quality of his play.
If Staj anoints him as captain, he would be foolish not to tell him (Matty) that if he gets a yellow card he`ll be substituted immediately.
I say this as I believe that Matty on a yellow, is now a definite liability...

The other problem with Matty is, he's far too slow. A speedy front man will slice open even a good defence from time to time, but I've never seen that from Matty. Especially his first year when he couldn't hit the ground if he fell off a horse.

Given that we do not look like signing another striker then we line up a little like this.

-------------------------------Birighitti/Pearce--------
Gordon/Miller-----Gallifuoco/Tongyik-----Fox/Rowles-------Clisby/Hatch
-----------------------Eun-sun/Stensness/Melling-----------------------
-------------------------------------Duric/Nisbet------------------------------
------------------DDS/Shabow---------------------------------------------------
Silvera/Majok---------------Murray/Simon-------------------Oar/McGlinchey

The only senior players that will command a spot and not be out constantly injured or suspended I think are Birighitti, Ziggy, Clisby and Oar. Of those Ziggy would be my pick for captain.

To me Murray was wasted out on the left and must be starting in the middle. A front five of Duric, DDS, Silvera, Murray and Oar look to be our strongest - still short a clinical striker but I would back Murray over Simon purely because he more likely to improve with more opportunities and experience.

And he's less likely to get carded, and he's a lot quicker.

Murray has to start up top every game, it's as simple as that. We're not getting another 9 so we should put him in. Sticking him on the wing achieves nothing and puts him out of position. He's not gonna be high on the goal scorers chart but l would much prefer to see him than Simon who quite frankly is a liability and offers little. I know Matty scored a few goals last season but how many were penalties? Judging by the Roar game, we've got plenty of contenders for pen takers when Simon's not on the pitch.

What worries me is that continually playing someone obviously not good enough who does stupid things might undermine the coach and could cause tension in the squad. Imagine how the players who watch Simon flail around each week must feel that they arent getting a start.
I know we are better than last season but we could improve faster if we didnt have to wait for his contract to run out and they can get rid of him (which we surely will)
Oar, Silvera and DDS need someone who can run onto their passes - Simon isnt that player. I'm not convinced that Murray is either TBH but should get a shot

About half of them. Pretty sure Murray equaled him in open play with a fraction of the minutes and out of position.

I agree and have said many times of a choice between he two he’s got to be the starter, he could grow with time and faith but it’s very unlikely Simon will at this stage of his career.

But if we are going to consider playing 2 strikers as we did we need reinforcements or at least a solid plan for who will be providing coverage for the wings and up front when someone runs out of gas or is injured/suspended. We’ve got Majok but I’m not sure I see any obvious answers for the wing if we use him there.

And a lot smarter, better touch and surprises everyone with his aerial ability.

Aerial abilibity i am yet to see......in fact Mayok has looked better with his head than Murray.

They are both good kids and Simon is a great enforcer to come off the bench BUT we NEED a real 9 to lead us to glory......otherwise Pikey is just beaing plain dumb again.....false economies.

Yep. No other HAL team would even consider them as starting strikers. I’m prepared to give Muzz more time to develop but we clearly need a better starting striker.

Yeah he's the perfect example. Had almost all the attributes to be a very high quality striker. Great speed, strength (after he worked on it) balance, excellent feet and could finish... just his heading was sub par.

But like so many young strikers, because of the importance on having experienced starting strikers, and also because he had the speed and skill to be effective on the wing, he misses crucial years in front of goals and then his goal scoring instinct goes and his development slips backwards. Rashford is a perfect example. Has clearly lost his instinct.

Bernie did a great job for us on the wing and I loved the long mazy counter runs he'd pull off. But honestly, had more talent than Juric, Taggart or McClaren imo. Tragic really.

Central Coast Mariners starlet Sam Silvera has been rewarded for his strong pre-season and FFA Cup form with a Hyundai A-League contract that will see him with the club until May 2022.

The 18-year old, who was on a scholarship deal, caught the eye of fans during an impressive string of FFA Cup performances, including a goal against Brisbane Roar after he came off the bench at Dolphin Stadium in the Round of 16.

Speaking ahead of the Mariners blockbuster Hyundai A-League round one clash against the Western Sydney Wanderers, Silvera said it was a dream come true to get his first professional contract.

“It’s a very exciting time for me and really I’m just stoked for this to happen on the eve of the season,” Silvera said.

“I have really enjoyed pre-season and the FFA Cup with the team, it was great to get a few wins under our belt, so I’m very thankful for this opportunity and I’m looking forward to the season starting this weekend.”

“I’m really happy for both myself and my family, they have done a lot to help me to this point so it’s very exciting for them too.”

Head Coach Alen Stajcic said it was just reward for Silvera’s hard work on the training pitch and performance with the Mariners so far.

“Sam has shown excellent work ethic and a great attitude on and off the pitch since coming in, and this is a great step for him in his career,” Stajcic said.

“His performances have caught the eye of a lot of people, and to have him as part of the Mariners for the next few years is a very exciting prospect for our fans.”

After last week’s FFA Cup loss to Adelaide, the Mariners focus is firmly on Saturday’s clash with the Wanderers, before a massive F3 Derby against Newcastle the following weekend
