Mariners Squad - 2019-2020

Pretty ok with it TBH
Muzz needs to be told he has 6 games to lock in a spot and with Silvera, DDS and Oar behind him, should get the supply he needs

If anything it makes us better, not because Matty doesn’t have a place but because we seem determined to force him on the starting squad. Not being available takes that option off the table and forces us to look elsewhere. But we do need to give Murray a decent chance to make his mark, it’s not like the alternatives are averaging 0.5 goals or more per game anyway.

Where'd you hear this?

Not willing to disclose that Josho. Believe me it proved to be far more accurate than Shaun last season....no disrespect to Shaun who always has a balancing act to perform.
Here was not discounted as a possibility.
I will post more if and when i have something more concrete.

Yeah look, not going to get any kind of carried away, but we all know he loves it here and absolutely knows how much us fans love him.

Now, where’s our visa striker?

With the amount of games he's featured in we've practically been playing with 1 less visa allocation than everyone else.

Reports Adelaide want George Blackwood off the books. Apparently CCM made contact with his agent?
There was a rumour that we were looking to swap Melling for Carlo Armiento but it fell over for some reason. Blackwood is a more proven option but 4 goals in 1000 minutes isnt exactly a stellar record. Gives more attacking options but no clear first choice. Not much point bringing him in if we're going to have him and Murray fighting for Matty's scraps.

We DO NOT NEED OR WANT another striker who can't reliably score. We have almost as many of those as we have DM's
I'd rather save our money

There’s no question we are short on attacking depth. If Muzz was to pick up an injury we’re in a really bad spot. Not great if either Oar or Silvera is unavailable either. We need a visa striker but can’t afford to pin all our hopes on that. If we were to pick him up at a reasonable price we could focus Majok on being a wide sub and use Murray and Blackwood as we see fit.

Yes he becomes surplus if we land our visa striker but that’d be a nice problem to have.

I always thought Blackwood looked like a bit of a simpleton. Not sharp, no personality, just big and around the goals. Not the most generous sentiments, but hard pass from me.

Couldn’t agree more. Sadly the product of our youth system where the big strong kid gets the inside running with development opportunities.

Interestingly "A-League Roundtable" on Foxsports on Wed nite with Adam Peacock/Boza/Robbie Slater/Andy Harper & Archie Thompson, George Blackwood was a topic of conversation in relation to how Adelaide may fare this season.

Slater mentioned Adelaide would struggle this season despite beating us to make the FFA Cup Final, because 'they lost their best x2 players in Isias & Goodwin.

Idiot Thompson said they haven't had a succesful Striker since Van Dyk, Djitte "wasnt really prolific", however he said he's "still a BIG fan of Blackwood"

Archie said he needed to be played and moulded into more of an "out'n'out #9"

Slater said
"George Blackwood frustrates me, & he frustrates a lot of people because you know he has the quality. I remember speaking to Graham Arnold when he was at Syd FC of the future he thought George was going to have & maybe still can have, but I really think this is a critical season for Blackwood, but that goal he scored against the Mariners IS exactly what George has got to do, & that shows you he can do it ... perfect first touch .. buries it with conviction!.
Yeah .. he's the type of player if Adelaide are going to do something this season is going to have to step up & do it regularly"

This is one of my all time greatest hates. And has cost us as a football nation imo.

Watching small late bloomer creative kids with amazing vision being overlooked for very simple minded and limited players prospering only due to some (at that point) greater athletic ability - of course there are some kids whose athletic ability is just so high you can’t ognore them, there’s a premium on speed in our game, but with kids do rarely is it even apples with apples. They don’t all physical mature at the sand time, and even 11 months of extra growth before a given age cut off can be huge for kids,

Seems to be getting better now though? I haven’t been around any youth development systems for the last few years.

Much easier to build an athlete than a footballer.

Exactly. At a certain level, sure if you don’t have the genetics you’re at a disadvantage and will struggle to break into top tier. But football is one of the great sports because of the many other equalisers and different ways you can leverage your various strengths and ability. Mooy amd Rogic are great examples. Two of our slowest players and for mine our best players after Matty. And Matty is another great example. Bit short isn’t he o_O
