When someone other than Matt is named captain for the season I will feel more assured he won’t be starting each week and can go back to his SFC role.

However I’d also prefer Murray to get 30mins at the end of the games.

However Matt still has something to offer the team IMO. We need a fighter like him to instill the effort in the team

Didn't Shaun say we're getting a visa striker? If this is the case, Matty won't be starting striker. You don't pay for a visa striker just to put him on the wing. Matty may still start I suppose, but where would you play him? Surely not CB?

If its reliable we are paying WAY too much for Simon. Rather than sit him on the bench or have the youth team picking up bad habits/attitude, cant we sell him (even at a loss and get something back for him)? Maybe we can loan him to Newcastle to lower their attacking ability?
If we really want to sign incompetents, I'm sure we could pick up John Sidoti on the cheap.

I find all the Matty bashing on here a bit disrespectful and slightly annoying.

He was the Captain last year because no one else was a suitable candidate.

He is our all time leading goal scorer. He is a warrior and a true Coastie.

Would I pick him over Murray....without doubt.

Should he be be our number 1 striker.....no we need higher quality and younger if we are to challenge.

Matty Simon is a legend of our club and should be afforded respect.

He, and we cannot live in his past. He is a pro footballer and will be aware that when you are no longer performing, getting benched, sold on, not offered a contract is part of the package. He was woeful last year ( a large percentage of the goals he DID score were from penalties). He just isnt up to scratch (and wasnt last year either IMO). The last thing we need is more dead wood.
He cant manage to do his principle job of scoring goals, let alone carrying out the role of captain. I think he is technically poor compared to many other strikers. He cant create goals where others can, and recently has been missing chances when the ball was delivered to him. He is a poor role model for other players, let alone kids watching on.

It’s not too dissimilar to the Robbie Kruse situation - IMO he became a target because he was being played more than he probably should have been and not performing to the level the team needed. That’s a management failing more so than a player failing but the player is the one out there not getting the job done. Like Kruse aside from the lack of end product Matty put in a lot of work for us and I don’t think anyone is disputing that, but you need more from a starting forward.

Matty should have been a club leader but shouldn’t have been captain because he shouldn’t have been consistently starting. Watching Mulvey try to pair Matty and McCormack was like watching someone try to bang a square peg in to a round hole. You are right there weren’t many alternatives last year, maybe O’Neill or Golec/Cisse before their form was shown to be bad.

Between Murray and him I’d back Murray because of the potential to grow but would prefer a clear first choice striker, unfortunately that means one of the two won’t be seeing many minutes at all. Simon is what he is and not getting any younger. Is it disrespectful to say no one else would pick him up if we released him? Or is that just being realistic? None of these are personal attacks just pragmatism that needs to exist in professional sports.

Edit: IMO the criticism only became a bit personal/about his character after his shocking outburst at the ref and he brought that part on himself.
