Be very narrow with Oar and who? on the other side
Silvera at the moment, maybe Majok depending on formation if we sign a visa striker but we'd have pretty much no depth in the event of an injury. I would have liked to see how Ingham went for us but if he's a MM signing and was picked up when we were at rock bottom I have to wonder if we were paying overs for him. If we're going out looking for players now under Staj and potentially with a new keeper, one of the Koreans confirmed, new visa striker plus the other signings we've made I think we're a far better proposition now than we were then.

Maybe Ingham got sold on being at terrigal in time for lunch :p

Losing one of the Koreans would be a shame, although it’s pretty weird to say they don’t think they could get to the fitness required, the K league is notorious for what they demand from players.

Maybe it is fitness in terms of injury recovery. I thought one of them was on his way back from a broken leg.

Ingham has already gone - he left at the start of the week. He signed a pre-contract agreement with Mulvey in January and apparently does not like Stajic.
Same goes for one of the Koreans. He said that he didn't think he could reach the fitness levels needed but also wasn't a huge fan of the coach.
I had heard something similar to this and that those two aren’t alone in that opinion. If Staj is being a hard-nose, then I am ok with that, as every coach needs to be a little bit of a b*stard imo but let’s just hope it’s not something else.....

WOW
That’s actually mind blowing. Makes absolutely no sense either. If he doesn’t want to be here then good riddance.
DDS showed last night he’s willing to fight for the good of his career, very early but I hope he continues to do that for our benefit.

Yep rather be rid of the chaff before the season starts. Time left to have a look around fit replacements.

We definitely need a striker. Hopefully a quality one is on the way. However until that happens the first step is to put Simon on the bench and find out who else can fill the spot. Murray must get a chance starting to show what he can do with this attacking midfield. Even if we are getting a superstar we still need a backup and Simon is not the answer.

We need another DM. There will be times when we want to start with two. Hopefully one of the Koreans will fill one spot and Nizzy can have the other. Behind those two (if they work out) we need another backup. Melling is not good enough. A DM must be able to get his head up and be able to pass accurately. Melling is unable to do either.

Last night showed we need some more depth in the centre half position. Sure, Ziggy can cover but then we have no fullback. Desperately need another defender.

Those three positions are probably more urgent than a keeper.

Yep, don't mind a bit of toughness and clearing out the chaff but like you I hope this preseason slog is being done in a scientific and planned manner and that the strength and conditioning coach has a big say in this.

I am getting concerned about the injury toll and niggles we are already racking up.

We know the squad will be thin, therefore in order to be successful this season, we need fuller squads week in week out.

I actually think the keeper position is our greatest urgency.

Up until last night it sounds like it's been hard work to prep in a short space of time. Getting through to the next round of the cup gives them something meaningful to celebrate. Sure we were expected to win but it takes some pressure off and provides a bonding opportunity. Our next game will be between the 20th and 28th of August and should we make it through the following round is on the 17th & 18th of September.

I'm inclined to agree....no real striker will definitely cost us games as well, but if our front line and midfield link up together well, and Staj is able to put in some effective coaching and a professional mindset (you know, players actually hanging back after training to work on their own skills) then this should mitigate some of the effects of a striker. Keeper on the other hand, is an individual position - and our back line is going to be improved, but not watertight.
But even with all that....we need Matty Simon to be better than last night. But he's been going downhill ever since he won the golden boot with us. I want to believe he'll get better after last night......but we need to plan without him.
Defensive line.....hope that was an anomaly not having a defensive sub.
But, we made it through to the next round. That matters. And well done to them.

Disappointing to hear one of the Koreans may be out. Hope it's not the attacking one, because we may have a real problem if so. But if so....he probably wouldn't be a cheap player so I'm sure they'll keep on the hunt.

I disagree on that last bit.
We need a striker but as you said I think Murray could work with the other attacking players and have a good season, not ideal but that didnt stop Adelaide being decent this year.
For the DM we might have one of the koreans (if not we need to replace them with quality) with Nisbet and Melling as secondary options for the times we decide to play 2. Last night wasn't Melling's best but I think last year he showed he can be a serviceable backup option and he always works hard for us. DDS can play deeper and did a bunch of defensive work under Okon, not where we want him but it's an option. We have Mcglinchey on the books too and if Staj can get the most out of him thats another possibility. GG can play there too but we need more depth at the back to consider that.
We do need more depth in the back line. Rowles has another game out for suspension but should be back the one after whether thats FFA cup or round 1. Whether we pick up another CB or not I'd at least like to see us bring in a backup RB so we can redeploy Ziggy across the backline if needed, if we go for some young / NPL players I wouldn't be opposed to a LB as well which would potentially give cover for clisby without taking from our CB depth. That would give us the option of GG, Rowles, Tongyik or Ziggy in CB.

But Pearce as our number 1 keeper? In the other roles we have an ok setup with some backups that arent necessarily ideal, we'd be starting a keeper thats not ideal every week unless we address that spot. Fortunately it seems we've got that resolved but I do have to wonder if the birighitti news hadnt broken if you'd still feel that way.

Still shocked about this Ingham development, the way we set up lastnight is perfect for him and he’d thrive.
If he’s the one wanting out he’s an absolute fool.
If we release him he counts against the cap, yeah?
I’d be happy enough for Silvera to be first choice on the right and see he develop massively. But we urgently need GK and a leading CB urgently. Birra sorts GK. Staj should go for that late 20’s former La Liga CB that kurz desperately wanted at Adelaide in January.
Then we can look at another winger and striker.

The guys on Coast FM mentioned that we had three scholarship players. One is Silvera. Does any anyone know who the other two are. I'm assuming two of Hatch, Miller and Moric.

I have no problem with Melling being the backup DM. The guy might not be the most talented player but there were few, if any, last season who fought for the team more. He also improved immeasurably during the season. Didn't see last night's game but he looked pretty good without being a star against Manly so hopefully last night was just a sign of tiredness from hard work.

Nisbet and Silvers are the only two on scholarships atm. Moric has only been signed in NPL and Hatch and Miller are on NYL contracts until September as all the remaining NYL players are.

I cannot fault his commitment, definitely a trier.
Last year I thought he was one of the most improved players in the squad after an ordinary start.
Last night looked like a return to the beginning of last year. It was not only his misdirected passes which led to turnovers, but a lot of his other passes were to players under threat which also led to turnovers. He did not provide a safe link when playing out from the back. Nizzy gets his head up, makes better decisions and more precise passes.
Hopefully last night was just a bad game but if we are to be competitive I cannot see him being a starter.
