Marcos Flores gets it

If the $50k rumour is true it seems crazy to get rid of him.

Interesting article on TWG about Flores.

Looks like he really wanted to stay.
This quote caught my eye:
"I can't believe that only one person at the Mariners believes I am not good enough."
I wonder who that one person is?
The one person is the coach and if he doesn't want Flores it doesn't matter who else does. Flores was beautiful to watch and sometimes, as all brilliant players are, quite untouchable, but also, like many brilliant players, unable to perform consistently when needed - Melbourne Victory at Bluetongue and Adelaide away come to mind. Both were pressure games in which he was quite anonymous. I can remember when writing about the games often saying that he was a sixty minute player. I am agreeing with Nebakke when I say I think Moss has moved on from the concept of relying on the No.10 and is looking for a more pragmatic approach. Mind you, I am quite underwhelmed by Kim, if McGlinchey returns I can't see him getting much game time.

Sydney FC then for Flores

Just lost del. Annie signed him from victory (auto correct changed Arnie to Annie so will leave it) now needs a 10 at sfc. Could get him under the cap then buy a os marque and Aussie marquee to go with him
Or
Jets as was spotted at a game their

Had a real ill shove it up mossy context to it. So a rival would add extra spice to it

29 March - Marcos Gone
11 April Trifiro - Extends deal for another 1 yr
source Mariners website

Trifiro was not ANNOUCED (may have signed prior) until after Marcos was cut. So to say he was on the books so couldn't keep Flores is not correct.

Flores willing to accept Trifiro type money - I'd have taken Flores - You could even use him as a 2nd striker. I hope he doesn't go to SFC or Jets as have a feeling that will bite Mossy on the arse & therefore us.

Not bagging Trifiro I like him but he's not a JW medal winner who has spent a lot of time with the fans.

Al ... gotta agree given a choice between Flores & Trifiro on similar money and most would say there is no choice... every manager makes mistakes and on what info is available this seems an error of judgement ..

I'd say there's a lot less risk with Trifiro.

Flores can do nice things, but...
  • he's coming off a knee reconstruction
  • he was never a 90 minute player in his time with us
  • the end product was sorely lacking - 3 goals and an assist in 862 minutes isn't what you'd expect from a former Johnny Warren medallist
His previous few seasons aren't a great look either - he wasn't setting the world alight at Melbourne and lost his spot in the team, he couldn't hold his spot in the lineup at Liaoning Whowin, so his last *good* season was in 2010/11. (source: Transfermarkt). Given he's 28 but hasn't had a good year in more than three seasons, that's a high risk proposition.

It's not enough that he's cheap - we've got limited squad spots, so even if he came for free, we still have to use a spot for him that blocks out another player. Only so many spots can go to midfielders, so hard-headed decisions have to be made.

With any hard decision, there's always the chance that you're wrong (otherwise we'd call them easy decisions!) but I think they got this one right.

not to mention that if he came good he'd then want a lot more coin that we couldn't afford the next season and we'd be on the hunt for a no. 10 once again

I can see the logic in this but would have loved to have kept him. I will reserve judgement until the full squad is finalized. I'm not convinced Marcos was excess to requirements, maybe more to do he wouldn't fit in with our style of play. If we lose out on Bernie and Wee Mac then this decision could come back and bite us.

A lot of early season minutes getting the ball with back to goal in own half why the other teams pounced & pressed the shit out of us.

Mcbreen also crowded him when he came back in.

Ibini's arrival would have opened things up for Flores.

There are a lot of if's but's & maybe's involved.

We will see. I wasn't a huge fan myself but at the price mentioned I'd have taken him again.

We are not a club known for hard headed decisions previously!....hutch, kwas, porter etc

If he 'came good' we would have a great footballer who loves what the mariners are about on relatively bugger all money. Losing him next season off contract or having to front more cash is part n parcel of any A league teams players that 'come good'.

I'm a big Flores fan and genuinely wish we could have kept him but I don't actually believe all this minimum wage stuff
it's only rumour thus far and he was on half a million previously

As you will see I have put my name to this post.

I personally spoke to Marcos in the Chairmans Box at the Semi final against Western Sydney Wanderers at Pirtek Stadium. He advised the following and was happy for it to be public knowledge. At Melbourne Victory he was on $500K per year. When he came to CCM he was on $400K per year 50% paid for by CCM and 50% paid for by Melbourne Victory. After his injury and to prove himself he was prepared to sign for 1 year for $50 for the year.

This is what he told me himself.

Obviously the club is free to select any player they want and I totally respect Phil Moss's decision in this regard as he is the coach but any assertion from anyone that Marcos was after more money was incorrect.

Also from a community point of view he has done more to represent the CCM brand in local football this year than the entire club combined.

well that changes things for me, he'd be worth the punt for sure and as I've drooled in the past imagine McGlinchey, Flores and Kim together (also Fitz) - pretty formidable!

Now Bernie's not an iron could be worth a change of mind but I'm not expecting it

I think maybe Mossy has alot of faith in Trifiro and Kalik ( who will be too young for next season I guess). Kim isn't really a # 10. I still wish we had kept Marcos and hope there is still some chance to get him back. Where we are really lacking is right midfield, I don't want to see Dukey there at all next season. Matty maybe if fit and in some sort of form could do a job there.

I agree Sproddy, for a community based club the only one doing any community work was Marcos and now he has gone :(

Aaaaaaaah, on THIS point Kwas REALLY need some props, he's been at even more events than Flores, he just doesn't have the halo :( - or the twitter engagement ;)

BUT, once that's said, these guys have one obvious thing in common, they're both injured... I think it's worth bearing in mind when we commend them on their community engagement. Don't get me wrong, it's excellent that they're engaged, but don't blame the rest of the team for being less engaged... After all, when Flores and Kwas were engaging, the rest of the team were busy doing what they were actually paid to do - playing and training...

Totally agree. Players on the long term injury list have all done some good community work. Not taking anything away from Marcos.
