Elrich Goone? (Troisi edit), Edgar Davids anyone?

The Mariners have been in contact with sister club Sheffield United in the hope of securing an injury-replacement player for Elrich, and have their sights on former Newcastle United star Keith Gillespie.
waste of time looking for a replacement we have all the players to fill this position untill the end of season and we will have Heff and Gumps back this season . All we need to if we want to spend the money is extend Bozza's term untill Asia as with him in defence we are a different team playing together rather than individuals so why spend more cash for a individual who could be no help to us anyway.
Good point.

Lecco defender Andrea Merenda is set for trials with Central Coast Mariners.

Mariners boss Lawrie McKinna told the Sydney Morning Herald: "Merenda is a former Italian under-20, or so we've been told, but he's 31 and has spent the past few years in the lower leagues in Italy."

Off contract Chateauroux defender Jonathan Bru is also continuing his trials.

McKinna, meanwhile, revealed he's asked to take Sheffield United reserve David Carney on-loan. The Mariners have a partnership with the Blades.

"They offered us two players from Ferencvaros but we weren't interested in those. Dave was one of the players we asked about but we haven't heard back yet," McKinna said.

Why the f**k are we trialling a 31yr old lower italian league defender as a replacement for a winger....ffs

If david carney wanted to play in the A-League he would have stayed and if he gets brought back how much of a kick in the guts would that be .Gettin into English Football then the send you back.

And we can trial anyone im happy even if there 31 we have in the past eg Aloisi and Bozza. They were older.

I think it was probably a case of Carney being a winger and also reports of him not being happy. I wouldn't read too much into it. The guy is a Socceroo so he aint as bad as half the muppets running round for other teams.

I would have preferred we got someone from Sao Palo - now that would be interesting......

Lawrie.  Top top coach......

I'm really starting to worry.

I wouldnt be worrying about the Gaffer he is one of the best in the league hence he has been to 2 GF's in 3 years winning a Premiership with what many describe as a solid squad hence the Mariners are never tipped by the so called experts to feature in the finals. (Harper, Slater, Foster etc)

McKinna goes safe with his selections and Carney would be a winner with the Marinators faithful especially as he is a current Socceroo. He has flair, would allow us to play him on either right side as he did for Bling or on left and bring Adrian into an attacking midfield role.

People should remember that he was close to signing with us after season 1 but the lure of ACL kept him at Bling. I am still wondering what we get out of this deal with Sheffield i havent seen anything yet. Maybe we should organise a pre-season game against them in Asia next off-season that might start the ball rolling.

He's a good coach.  Not a great one.  His tactics are odd at best, and his substitutions are poor.

Long balls continually win the day, playing out from the back is actively discouraged, and any creativity within the team is stifled.  I for one will be sorely disappointed if one of the best (potentially) players in this league in Caceres is continually mis-used through his stay here.  Just to cite one example (I can certainly bring up more).

And my worrying wasn't about Carney - he's more than good enough for us.  My worrying was about the defender replacing Elrich, as well as the other things I've just said.

Re: those 2 GF's we've been to - remind me how we did again in those??  How horridly we were out-coached, out-tacticised (is that even a word??), and generally outplayed (first half of the one against Sydney excepted).

I didnt say the Gaffer was a great coach i said one of the best in an 8 team league. LM and Merrick are the only first season coaches left so he must be doing something right!

We lost both GF's 1 nil and maybe LM did get tactics wrong for those games even though if circumstances change and we get a little bit of luck as Scum did we win both games.
This season LM brought in 2 wide players in Caceres and Elrich showing a change of tactics from the 2&3  seasons when he didnt have this style of player due to key injuries and lack of squad depth.

The one thing i admire about the squad he noticed where the squad was lacking and brought in the best available players and has adapted his tactics. He will always play 4-4-2 which i like as it is a free flowing formation that allows wingers to attack like Heff when he comes back.

Serious if you were in LM's position what formation would you play and who would start? Wouldnt be far off i guess what LM starts with each and every week. And if it successful why change it. Wouldnt you rather see the 3 points then as Craig Foster style of football.

Bulldog - I must admit, I did chuckle at the "Craig Foster" style of football comment.

But you're right, I'd only shuffle a few positions.  It's more about the way we play and the substitutions.  It seems that if Plan A doesn't work, why try it 76 more times before throwing on someone with 2 minutes to go to try "long balls into the box", y'know??

I certainly wouldn't restrict Caceres to a left wing only rigid role, I'd let him flex his creativity in the classical "floating No. 10" role, and I'd get Boogaard away from left wing back ASAP, he's been shown up there way too many times already.  And I'd say "let's strengthen up the midfield", but the recruitment has let us down a bit here - we're stuck with a small and uncreative midfield (except for Osman) for now..... hopefully come January we can do something about it.  Oh, and give the captaincy to Jedi.

The main reason I keep thinking this is that I've seen us play like this before.  The only problem is it's for 10 minutes here, 20 minutes there.  Remember from 20 minutes until half time in Round 1 away to Sydney last season??  Utterly perfect football.......

Another reason I love this club - we can talk about this sort of thing freely and in a civil manner - if this was the Melb. or Sydney forums there'd be a forum war right about now.  ;)

Bear - f*ck off, alright??  C*nt.  :p

Serious i understand what you are saying but i disagree but thats ok!
I agree with Adrian and thats why i think its vital we bring in a winger asap because that will allow Adrian to play the 10 role.
I think when Heff gets back maybe play him on the left wing and keep Bojic at left back but then you leave Hutch out as he plays in that role.
But thats what the Gaffer gets paid for he will work it out.

Serious also we havent had a full squad on board yet this season and with players like owens, gumps and heff fit all wide players gives the gaffer a change to experiment which he doesnt have the luxuary at the moment and really he has never had this depth. I believe LM is building a squad to compete in ASia and i honestly believe he has the 3rd best squad in the league behind Melbourne and Adelaide. Thats why we are 4th! we have had 4 starters out on long term injury and best young keeper in league suspended i think it is a fair start to the season seeing as though we could be on 12 points if we took all our chances.

Should have won against the Scum after leading 86th minute penalty 3rd min injury time unlucky.
Sydney outclassed early came back strong desrved a point or even more.
Against Qld fanastic football best we have played in a long time.
Glen Moss saved Wellington!

Honestly i cant blame the gaffer for any of these results.

I have to confess that I tend towards Serious's views here. A lot of our football is just dire to watch and we are inflexible in our tactics.

As Kossie said, when you play us, you always know what you are going to get. That might work some of the time but a good coach will always find us out (Grand finals anyone??)

Maybe a new head coach will bring about a slight change of style and we can stop trying to knock long balls for Saso to chase??

I agree in part.
But ultimately we should have been 4 - 0 up against sydney the first year at half time. So tactics can not be blamed unlike poor finishing.

Even last year, a handball given and we could have one, or viddie keeps the ball and we could have one.

I disagree that we play boring football, I think we play effective football.
Some of the inter-passing in the QLD was top draw stuff and happed because Jedi won the midfield battle and then brought others into play.
I can't see us getting Carney, unless it means that Heff is going to out for longer than has been suggested...

Lawrie got a team of underdogs to two grand finals and a premiership. The last GF was lost because of one dumb mistake from Vidmar and one overlooked handball, not because Lawrie got anything particularly wrong.

Serious' skills are so much better than Lawrie's that Lawrie is the Football manager for the Mariners whilst Serious is............. well.............not a manager of any A-League team.

Lawrie is awesome!!!
