Elrich Facing Nine Months Out

Sep 1 2008 12:15

EXCLUSIVE: Ahmad Elrich is facing nine months on the sidelines with scans today expected to confirm a torn cruciate ligament.
Central Coast Mariners boss Lawrie McKinna said everyone at the club is gutted for the 27-year-old and everything will be done to ensure he gets the best rehabilitation possible.

Elrich has already seen a chunk of his career wiped out by a knee injury and McKinna cannot believe how lightning has struck twice - albeit a different knee.

McKinna told au.fourfourtwo.com today : Ahmad is going for scans today but were pretty well 100 per cent sure hes done his cruciate.

During the game I looked up and he was holding the back of his knee. At first I thought hed done his hamstring but now we could be looking at seeing him out for nine months or so.

He caught his studs in the turf and the knee just twisted.

Were all gutted for the boy, he was getting better with each game. But hell have done what needs to be done and then well get him on the rehab path and look forward to having him back next season.

Elrichs long-term absence opens the door for an injury replacement and McKinna said: Well look at that this week getting an attacking midfielder but Ive no-one specific in mind right at this moment.

The injury cast a shadow over an otherwise excellent match for the Mariners as they enjoyed a 4-2 win against Queensland Roar on Sunday.

McKinna said: I didnt think we were that far away from where we needed to be in the first two games of the season to be honest.

"Queensland Roar had put Adelaide under a lot of pressure last week but I thought we contained them well.

Scoring four goals away from home was very pleasing. Matty Simon had scored but we took him off as a precaution after hes booked. You bring on a substitute (Dylan Macallister) and he goes and gets you another couple of goals.

Dylan scored two terrific goals and then what a thumper from Mile Jedinak for his free-kick.

Meanwhile, McKinna confirmed Dean Heffernan is back in a cast after a fresh crack was found in the leg he shattered against Sydney FC last season.

The defender will remain in the cast for four weeks with roughly the same period needed for rehab. Its another blow and the squad is being tested, said McKinna.

And you call Steve Corica the silver dragon??

Indeed - jsut as the fans at Sanfrecce Hiroshima did. Quality player, respected by all.

Elrich would have been good for the mariners this season and will be good next yr. If you had a genuine target man or striker at sydney you would understand.  :piralaugh:

Can't say I'm too fond of target men (and I'm English - shock horror), but that doesn't change the fact that Elrich had lost his pace (his main weapon) and was clearly failing to cope with it. He was only marginally better than he was with the Nix last year, and that's saying very little. The best thing about his game was set-pieces, which again is pretty poor overall.

A lot depends on who Lawrie gets in - but he will prove to be sweet little loss in the big scheme of things.

Any idea which knee it is? If it's the same one that he did when he was at Fulham, could be almost curtains.

No, that's a common mistranslation. In Japanese "silver dragon" means "gray-haired git".

The other knee, thankfully. Poor guy's probably shattered though

The thing that was encouraging on Sunday night was how Osman came on and showed plenty more than his sleepy display against Newcastle. He came on, straight away he won a header and then got right into the game. Coming back its got to be easier to settle into a match in right-mid, but he was attacking and creative and looked better as a part of a good Mariners unit. I was very pleased, and it will do him the world of good. One door closes, another opens.

Great opportunity for Osman to stake his claim and he certainly looked comfortable on the pitch in the Roar game.

sign Spaso Dilevski from  the Romanian wilderness...
Dilevski was far too inconsistent, and was out of his depth at times. I had the pleasure of seeing him a few times in Brisbane and he made Kwasnik look like Messi.

you are kidding...surely. definately not up to this level as a midfielder. RB however would be an option

Razor back, have a look, if you get the chance to see the unheralded work Osman did helping out Hutchinson and Jedi in the middle. He played narrower than Elrich at RM but his work inside helped to contain the Roar up the guts. He was doing basically the same thing, but more a roving role (Elrich and Caceres were out wide midfielders), in the Newcastle game helping out Porter and Hutch.

I'm not having a go at you, a lot of the work Osman does, isn't noticed too easily.

Osman can also weave his way through traffic with the ball, and can also tackle pretty well and scramble defend if he has to.

If Jedi gets a supension or, God forbid, an injury, a fit Osman as defensive CM would do me well.

I reckon Osman can play RB, RM, ACM, DCM, forward, winger, CB at this level. He's pretty adaptable which is a godsend for Lawrie when injuries strike the rest of the squad.

Until he got injured, Ossie was the "glue" that held our right hand side together.

Wait until he is match fit and he will be fine for us.

Exactly spot on. Give him a chance to get back to match fitness and over the psychological barriers that are there after such an injury and if he can do that he will be an important member come finals time and Asia in 2009

No question that he has utility value, but there is no chance he would be a regular starter in front of any other player in our squad in their prefered position. He is there to fill in the gaps or "glue" us back together when we have an injury crisis (like we do now). Before he got injured it was season 2 and we all know how we went that season don't we.

It's just that I find myself increasing uttering the words FFS ossie in a similar vane to the first 3 seasons with Kwassie. He has had an entire preseason and 3 rounds to get match fitness. IMO  he's just a squad player and here because he is a versitile player but never a starter and I'm sure LM and LG are on the phones looking for players so he doesn't have to start Osman.
