Central Coast Mariners v Kawasaki Frontale AFC CL 3rd Round

We got smacked well and proper ... but the first 3 goal were very soft all came from crosses... very similar to Hal 4, we are in desperate need of some top draw defenders.

Rather than have a rant at the coach and players ....  IMO only Elrich / Grumps & Huke can walk off the field and say we did our bit.... I sat their in disbelief last night at poor finishing (because by God we did create some chances)... lack of shape...lack of any leadership on the park...defensive in panic mode at times ... we looked very poor at times last night just second rate...

The change down the right hand side when Elrich came on was huge and I hope sooner rather than latter his knee is better as it was heavily bandaged last night but he is a class above most in the team..

My final comment ... we did a little game after the match last night and said if your where in a captain and could pick your side and you had a choice to pick either Hutch or Grump who would you pick to be in your side ... we all choose Grump.

Must be the end of Mrjda. No one could provide him with an opportunity as good as last nights first few minutes to get his form back. It's gone, and i hope he is too.

Makes losing Sash hurt, he would have scored 2 last night in Mrdja's place.

Wow is all I have to say

On the positives - well we witnessed a very good Football team tonight - it just wasn't ours.

I don't agree with some of the player ratings above I think Porter was better than Boogs. Boogs was a waste of a spot. Everytime he got it he hoofed it up field. Our distribution was woeful... Compare it to the only time I can remember Kawasaki hoofed it up field and his team mates ripped into him....

No way Mrdja was a 6 - he was useless

Only positives for us - Elrich was running and he stepped it up, as did Kwas...

The fact is we stand still - they had guys running all night and it was a lesson for all football fans - the movement and runs were something we will not see at Bluetongue again for some time - wish we would and wish it were us but it ain't gonna happen.

ONLY other POSITIVE - THE FLARE.....
The only reason Boogs hoofed it up field was because no one was moving into space to recieve a pass

You don't hoof it up field - keep posession - play it at the back for 5 mins just keep the F***ing ball.......

Yes no one moved but keep it bore me I don't care but whilst we have the ball its very hard for anyone else to score...... PATIENCE you must have...

Well what can you say about the Mariners Performance. Outclassed, Outplayed and Outskilled. Kawasaki were brilliant to watch, they were just very classy and skillful. That first goal was just perfect. The Mariners started off well in the first 5 mins but as soon as Kawasaki got on attack, we gave up. Our defence was terrible.

Hutcho you can yell and scream at the other players all you want, but how bout you put in some commitment. About time that Lawrie subbed you, almost the momeent of my night.

The last 20 mins in the bay was some good fun and i am glad that even though the mariners were shit, that the marinators were still in good spirit. Serious loved the 5 Kamakazi's in the air song.

To plagiarise the late great Bill Shankly "Kawasaki were lucky".
Good points from the game - kit still looks good; decent crowd; more game time for Elrich; typical cameo from Kwasnik; Plovers weren't hurt; this is precisely why Johnny Warren wanted Australian teams to engage with Asia, it sets standards for us to aspire to.
Bad points - so many prone Japanese bodies on the pitch I thought they were rehearsing for remake of nuclear attack on Hiroshima; That flare; Mrdja's finishing; Gumps impression of a headless chook; McKinna's failure to make changes at half time (why wait...?); no midfield, forcing defence to knock long balls; failure to engage two of the best attacking full backs in the A League; No one with enough nous and mongrel to subtly kick that little brazilian (he can't be that good, he's only playing J League). McKinna naming and blaming in public. We are now paying  for McKinna's notion that the draw with Pohang was as good as a win.
Conclusion - I'll be back to watch the Tinlan Teapots, c'mon you Mariners!

My thoughts on the shambles last night are as follows:
We were out played by a better team
We gifted them the 1st 3 and the 5th wouldn't have looked out of place at the young fellas U6 game!
Kawasaki look head and shoulders above the rest of the group (in ability not height!), but if they win their remianing games we can still sneak into 2nd spot by winning the games against the otehr 2 teams
Nik needs to be replaced with a more technically gifted striker (say Sasho) for next season,
D Mac needs to grow his hair longer
The Kwas needs to start in place of Osman
Danny needs to practice defending his near post
Huke needs to do the job he on the post for
Boogs needs to take a long hard look at himself
Simon needs to stop picking up silly yellows as we really miss him when he is out
The Board need to take this comp seriously if we ever qualify for it again!

Porter: 'It Was Embarrassing' - 442

CENTRAL Coast Mariners players were brutally honest with their own performances after last nights spanking handed out by a sublime Kawasaki Frontale in the ACL.

Midfielder Brad Porter described the 5-0 loss in Gosford as one of the worst he can remember.

"We've got to salvage something after that," he said. "Personally, I think everyone in the change-rooms would agree they're embarrassed.

"They taught us a footballing lesson tonight. It's something that Australian football as a whole has to aspire to.

"Every single one of them was totally comfortable on the ball. It's something we can learn from."

Porter said excuses about having not played a competitive game in three weeks would not be trotted out by the players, and he admitted that heads had dropped after Kawasaki took an early one goal lead.

"At the end of the day, we weren't good enough," he added. "They murdered us. Every single one of us has to put our hand up.

"But I think to a certain extent we let them play. Maybe we gave them a little too much respect. You give anyone time on the ball and they're going to be able to play."

Central Coast striker Nik Mrdja added that after the first Kawasaki goal went in, it reignited some old defensive uncertainties from the back end of the last A-League season. "I suppose we thought here we go again," he said.

Meanwhile Kawasaki superstar Kengo Nakamura joked after the game: "I'd like to play here just before I retire. I like this place, I like Central Coast."

CENTRAL COAST MARINERS 0 KAWASAKI FRONTALE 5

DEFLATED Central Coast coach Lawrie McKinna last night refused to concede the gulf between Asian and Australian teams was enormous after his Mariners were savagely knocked to the canvas by Kawasaki Frontale in Gosford.

It was lightweights against heavyweights and the 5-0 scoreline was ample evidence in the Asian Champions League Group H third-round match.

So embarrassing was the result that McKinna described the performance as the worst in the club's history.

"I am embarrassed and I hope they (the players) are, too," he said.

"After tonight we have lost a lot of respect."

While McKinna admitted Frontale were one of the best teams he'd seen in Asian football, he felt the Mariners were their own worst enemies.

"We made bad decisions, bad passes and gave the ball away needlessly. And we failed to make intelligent runs. Our confidence went out the window after the first goal," he said.

But he did give credit to a Japanese side that was so much quicker and tactically smarter.

They fielded four Japanese national team players, a North Korean striker Jong Tae-Se, who got them on their winning way with an eighth minute header and two very classy Brazilians in Juninho and Vitor Jr.

"Their movement and timing was outstanding and discipline good," Mckinna said.

"But I don't think you can judge the gulf of Asian teams on one game. What do you say about Newcastle's result (1-1 draw with Japan's Nagoya Grampus) last night?"

McKinna has two weeks to prepare his team mentally for a return bout with Kawasaki.

"There's a long list of things we have to improve on," he said.

"We're not out of it yet but the best we can hope for now is to finish second in the group."

Kawasaki lead with seven points, followed by Pohang Steelers (5) who scored a 1-0 win over Tianjin Teda last night. The Mariners are on two points and Tianjin have one.

It's going to be a tough road ahead as the Mariners play two of their remaining three matches away from home. Even Kawasaki coach Takashi Sekizuka was very surprised the way the Mariners capitulated last night.

"They were very different to what I expected. I didn't think it was the real Mariners from what I saw of them on DVDs and how we researched them," he said.

"We play them again in two weeks. We will prepare carefully and expect a challenge.

"Tonight we were able to defuse their strong points. We came here expecting to be quite intimidated but we worked hard on our planning."

The Mariners might have been shellshocked after Jong's opening goal but there was no way back after they trailed 3-0 at the break.

It was just one of those nights when nothing would fall for the Mariners. Nik Mrdja should have buried a header after just thee minutes and substitute Adam Kwasnik could so easly have had two goals in the second half. But there were very few chances on a night Australian football won't soon forget.

Along with a few thousand others I left at halftime. The Japanese team were too classy and well drilled. The Mariners were crap. Their paper thin defence was a disgrace. On this form they should forfeit the next game, sack their captain and the nonexistant defence and give Danny Vukovic a pay rise, it could have been worse if not for Danny.

I turned off after the 3 rd goal. Central Coast were simply out played tactically. My sons 12 year old football team do not give away that much possession. I just cannot believe so many players at A League level are lacking the basic technical skills of passing a ball short or long without losing possession. I believe many of the A League coaches do not have the capabilities or skills to improve or motivate the players. Sadly the results of this are on show on the park. The standard of football in this country has a long way to go.

I assume he is talking about the same Danny Vukovic that conceded what, 3, maybe 4 goals at near post, the 1 place keepers are not supposed to concede
