Central Coast Mariners v Kawasaki Frontale AFC CL 3rd Round

Two ways to look at is:

1) it's utterly deflating and heartbreaking, because this is one of if not the worst performances by a Mariners side to date, because after 2 draws there'd be cause for optimism, because apart from Gamba the Japanese sides hadn't exactly dominated over Australian ones.

2) Kawasaki are, obviously, a better side technically and otherwise than the Mariners have ever faced in their history.

Outclassed. We're rubbish.
What's more I was the only person in my entire row who actually paid for my ticket.

Most entertaining bits of the night was the plover bird trying to protect its two babies on the pitch (at one stage they were in Danny's goal LOL) and the flares.

lol true, i got distracted at one point from watching the bird and forgot to watch the game (didn't miss anything good). The flare was really good, took security ages to finally get there and put it out

Credit to the players for having the guts to walk round the pitch afterwards. Didnt see the Maltese maestro out there though (happy to be corrected)

Too good for us now is he?

I'm with Dibo, the last 20 mins was more fun than what was happening on the pitch and security  = epic fail.

so wombat - good enough to bitch and moan about the side but not good enough to actually lay down a few dollars and support the team live?

FFS - i've *just got home* from the match, the last thing i want to see is some clueless self-appointed expert to sit and apply half-witted analysis to a match they couldn't be arsed leaving the house to see. wanker.

I left the City at 4.45pm, had a shit journey, raced in home at 7pm. Got changed, raced to CCLC, sculled 2 beers, went into the ground and saw that f**king rubbish.

I reserve the right to apply half-witted analysis - you sir have no f**king excuse.

he was playing centre forward..pretty hard not to get into a goalscoring position when the ball is drilled into the box.  Anyway I said he did OK ..6 out of 10.  Didn't look any worse than Mrdja really.

LOL about Gumps he did a couple of strange things in last five mins (after I posted) including a nice clothesline tackle.

Gumps did little mate, no more and no less than anyone else

He had a go!

at running around lots yeah, he's no where near the player he was in V1, too may people think he still is.

You are talking shit Deej.
But it shows how low our stocks have fallen when a 35yo bench player is superior to more than half of the starting team.  Gumps is not the answer for us but he crystalizes the problems that we have and he also makes Lawrie look stupid when his favoured players are so insipid and technically poor.

No I'm giving my opinion which is the same as many others, funny that no other HAL teams offered Gumps a contract last year when he was out of contract? It's an opinion and simple as that.

Tonight's result was due to a poor team effort, no 1 person to blame and they need to go back to the drawing board.......we defended poorly and their attack was too strong, at times it was like they had 4 up front

With that logic why do we offer Kwasnik a life line.

It really should not have been a surprise to anyone. Frontale are one of the favourites for this competition and rightly so. Gamba dismantled Adelaide last year and now Frontale did the same to us. Fact is there is a huge GULF in J league to A League. How many internationals on their team compared to ours.

Talk on this forum of a 2-1 result to us were laughable, and whilst I didn't expect 5-0 I did expect 3-0.

A League teams need to learn how to play off the ball. The movement by these guys was phenomenal and not something you could appreciate on TV. Being there and watching these guys move and time runs the way they did was something I won't forget in a hurry. I am not sure we were that bad (were were not good) but I do think Frontale were that good and unless we learn to move off the ball and close runners down we will loose again in 2 weeks to them.

Frontale had done their homework - and by the movement I think they watched Melbourne against us and took it to a new level.... (Not suggesting Tards are that good but there movement and pace up front always worries our SLLLLLLOOOOOWWW defenders..)

Clearly you are right. However Adelaide did manage to compete, basically because they recruited and had a very strong squad with several overseas players strengthening their team.

How did we improve our squad?

$800 grand in the bank accruing interest.

Catch 22 though - Adelaide may have spent up and we haven't but they are now bankrupt and whilst I am sure there isn't a stack of coin floating around we aren't bankrupt...

I'm not getting into another conversation about this crap but Kwasnik had more than 1 contract offer but chose to return to the Mariners.

Back on topic, last night showed me we lack serious pace especially at the back, creativity in the middle of the park and have a long way to go if we want to compete with Asia's best.

However, this would be a good experience for the team and hopefully they will learn from this game.  Personally I think McKinna is the man for the job, he does so much for our club on and off the pitch but we do need some holes filled.

Well what can you say about the Mariners Performance. Outclassed, Outplayed and Outskilled. Kawasaki were brilliant to watch, they were just very classy and skillful. That first goal was just perfect. The Mariners started off well in the first 5 mins but as soon as Kawasaki got on attack, we gave up. Our defence was terrible.

Hutcho you can yell and scream at the other players all you want, but how bout you put in some commitment. About time that Lawrie subbed you, almost the momeent of my night.

The last 20 mins in the bay was some good fun and i am glad that even though the mariners were shit, that the marinators were still in good spirit. Serious loved the 5 Kamakazi's in the air song.

Flare was good too.
