'I think Sydney is a great club. Football wise, there's more opportunity there than anywhere else I could go," said Gibbs. "Sydney FC is the team you want to be in, especially at Youth Level, and also senior as well with the new coach (Vitezslav Lavicka). The culture of success at Sydney is very attractive."

Obviously didn't fit into our no dickhead policy.

With comments like that he will fit in well at Sydney.

Couldn't agree more. SFC would be way down my A League list of the best club to join as a junior.

i dunno, their kids get a run in the first team from time to time, and they won the national championship.

*runs and hides*

Totally agree, would make perfect sense for the youngster to go there. How did our NYL side go last year?

Sumed up in one word? Shite!

Had some ok games but nothing to bring overall rating abopve shite. Even having a constant presence of over age players did really nothing for them. I think the team was more treated as a recover from injury tool, than a genuine youth squad.

With Stringers, Mrdja and Dylan playing with Owens/Gumpy making cameos, they were a disjointed rabble with no shape, no cohesion and NFI quite frankly.

And dont get me started on Darko.

As a pure NYL side, they would have been scumesque in their awfulness. Only way is up

+1. Got to see a few games when I was by myself and could go into the stadium early. Wasn't worth the effort of turning up early......they simply didn't play like a decent team, more like a bunch of individuals trying to play a game (if that makes some sense).

Hee hee Razor agrees with "You" Dibo!

Agreed our NYL sides performances certainly weren't great lass year and SFC's in comparison were.  However for mine as an aspiring youth - besides wanting to play for my beloved Mariners. I would sincerely prefer to play for MV, Adelaide or Roar, as training with and around what have been more consistent, quality outfits, with a greater degree of integrity imo than sydney. It may change this year however as I think their new coach looks to be cut from a different cloth than say Branko or Kossie.

However I will admit, his words also struck me as very similar to Aloi$i's when he left and so left an ugly after taste in my mouth that also admittedly weighs on my opinion.

This is much more than having a good Youth team.
It might be credited to Kosmina but Sydney are now a club with not only a strong youth, but a conscious to actually play or try their youth players in the A-league. For any future youth star on the rise, clubs like Syd Fc, Brisbane stand out as well as Melbourne and Adelaide.
I feel this is an area Mariners have lacked, and we have ignored much to many fans frustration, opportunities to give a run to the better youth players i.e Smith, Sherlock, Lewis.
Why come here when Lawrie refuses to play you even during a home leg, dead rubber against a 2nd string Asian team or any dead rubber.

a stopped clock is right twice a day - and yes, that cuts either way depending on who you tend to agree with.

Top post, how will we know if they are good enough if we never play them

FFC you watched far more youth games than I, from memory the standard of our boys wasnt the best? I understand the idea of the youth team is progression but if they are not ripping the youth league apart are they ready for first team?
Ideally we should have had boys who were one or two seasons away from staking claims for first team but obviously last season that wasnt happening, clearly with the turnover of players, this year I read the only ones retained are the local boys, hopefully this season we have selected a more challenging squad

I thought Trifiro looked ok, Sherlock, D'Appuzzo and possibly Brady Smith - and Redders of course

The problem was they had no organisation so it was 11 individuals.

Personally, I reckon Redders D'Appuzzo and Sherlock will make it in the HAL, possibly Brady and I'm not sure about Lewis, he looks a bit lightweight.....maybe a few years may do the trick.

I would like to see them with better players around them and decent structure/organisation.

SFC will always have a bigger pool of juniors to pick from due to population and I expect kids prefer to stay local too.

When a W Syd side gets in, if they have an academy, SFC's advantage disappears overnight.

LM has a pretty good record with developing young players (Kwass, Danny, Matty etc) so I dont think its lack of will, he just doesnt think they are good enough right now?

In spite of the fact that Sydney have a number of extra young players their average age of contracted players is quite comparable to ours.

Ours average age is either 25.17 or 24.68 if you exclude Clarky whose position is ambiguous. SFC average age of contracted players is 24.48.

Dear me,

On four four two, after the article about Mc Ginshley coming to trial, a guy called Heini in the comments got confused and started blabbing about Michael Mifsud's record.

"Somehow, Heini has got McGlinchley mixed up with Maltese striker Michael Mifsud."

If he's coming, he'll undoubtedly be on the plane next to Viduka and Carney being served drinks by Caniggia.

Andrew Redmayne played the second half for Sheffield United last night against Sheffied FC in, I guess, Sheffield...

Not so,

Viduka, Carney & Caniggia were all being served drinks by one G. Arnold. Misfud was eating peanuts in the row behind.
