Maybe we could sign Mark Viduka ... looks like he will be looking for a new home soon! :)

doubt that will happen but ti would be great, i have a mate who is a massive viduka fan and he would never shut up if we signed him. But i think he would rather go to a Melbourne club

However what scares me the most is our crowds are falling and it is obvious good players put bums on seats at our club ... thus revenue ...so the money saved on not buying players will be lost in crowd revenue.

I'd say it's the results moreso that put bums on seats for the CC, rather than names.

Bozza & Alomissi didn't hurt crowds, but didn't do as much for them as being on a roll leading up to a Grand Final.

Having said that, this season's competition is shaping up to be impossible to get results without some SOLID signings.

I agree on results however I would love to see the stats of crowd figures in Season 3 prior to and after Aloisi signed. Can't help but think it was very very large increase in crowds when compared to the same periods in other years.....

We had some decent results last year and in fact prior to Xmas we were almost top of the ladder - our crowds were down. Even NYE game was light on in terms of crowds...

Have the melbourne clubs signed their marquee players yet?

AT is Melbourne Victory's marquee

and Hearts will be waiting for a year- but looks pretty straightforward (ie. Dukes will be there marquee)
That said- wat Viduka does in the meantime...slog it out in Europe, final paycheck in Aisa or...a temporary spot in HAL with another club, who knows?
Would we want to sign him...? Give me sterjovski any day of the week- but Dukes would still be a class above HAL
although thinking about it- we already have 2 target men who cant score at the moment (Macca + Mrdja)- do we want another?

Melbourne Victory ( the only A-League club in Victoria at this stage) has Archie Thompson as Marquee and I doubt they'd have room in their salary cap as they've just signed Hernandez on transfer.

There's talk of another A-League club for Melbourne/Victoria tentatively called Hearts but I don't know when or if they'll be invited to take up a franchise in the A-League.

Yes, sorry... brain explosion  ... know there is only one club in mel. "Hearts"? That sounds original!!! LOL, think we should tell them the names already been taken.

Even if we could sign Viduka for a limited time, it would be fantastic for the club, the fans and the players.  :)

Sorry I tend to think he may be a waste of time and money and the marquee spot.

Viduka has had little game time since the last WC (for a player playing in the EPL), and I get the impression he is one major injury away from pulling the pin on his playing career.

While he may get the turnstiles clicking a lot of those attending may not like what they see in Viduka. If he's unfit or disinterested, he will stand up at the Penalty Box yelling for the ball and dick around with it trying to turn with opposition defenders on his back for that impossible goal.

That said though, with Matty and Dylan injured for a while, we do need to look at what strikers we can use within the team or recruit.

yes, you are correct regarding Mark Viduka, however it might work on a short term contract. Just day dreaming here ... and hope they (meaning the management) are working feverishly in the background to acquire a striker.. and I wish they would throw us a bone from time to time.

One of the relegation fodder (oops sorry, recently promoted clubs) in the EPL will take him I reckon.

A Stoke, Burnley, Hull etc will offer him a stupid amount of $$ for a season. Then he can come back to Melb and play for the 2nd team (as he has said IIRC).

Yep, sounds about right. Especially about the relegation fodder!!! Any inside info on possible signings of a mariner striker? Read previously of the Scottish defender they are looking at.. anyone else on the horizon?

He would crap all over any defense in the A League - his recent game against Middlesbrough proved he is still a match winner at the highest level. Imagine Matty running off his passes. Before Aloisi stuffed things up, I remember being gobsmacked when I heard we had signed him(we won't talk about what he did from when he left us). Viduka would be 5 times the signing Aloisi was; in terms of both playing quality and as a crowd puller(possibly the all time best signing in the A League). I agree he can be lazy, sometimes things don't work out for him, however, at this level - sign him if possible! I'll even attend games - even if Hutcho is still playing.

and that is why we could never afford him - plus the fact that he is the Tardiest Tard there has ever been and would never play anywhere else

anyone want Younis from Adelaide?
Not an exceptional player but has HAL experience is a striker and we are short on strikers...
he has left Adelaide for family reasons- ie. he wants to play in NSW
although last time we had a NSW born Adelaide player...(ie. Owens)
tbh I'm not a big fan of Younis...but we need to sign players eh?

If you're not fan why suggest him? Why sign someone who is no better than what we already have?

ummm...because as sad as it sounds
a signing is better than no signings...
especially considering out of all people involved- apart from sterjovski (which is pushing it)- no one plays up front
if Simon has done his ACL
leaving Macca and Mrdja to lead our front lines I am worried...we need someone to at the very least put pressure on them
we definately need another striker- and atm Younis is available- i just wanted to see everyone thoughts

and i would be very suprised if he hasnt popped into conversations at Mariners HQ- whether it be seriously, or a quick thought that was rejected immediately!

A pity - I'd love to have him here or even just in the HAL.

In yesterday's Australian

.... comes on top of a suggestion Viduka won't finish his career in the A-League after he confided he is wary of putting himself through the same pain and drama that engulfed John Aloi$i last season.

Viduka admitted recently to Perth Glory coach David Mitchell that he had watched with disappointment the developments which saw Aloi$i jeered, abused and berated by fans and criticised by the media after failing to produce the goals expected of him in his first season with Sydney FC.

A $2.8million marquee signing, the former Socceroo striker struggled with injury and form and managed just two goals in 16 matches as Sydney missed out on the finals.

A shattered and devastated Aloi$i was eventually relegated to the bench amid calls for Sydney to cancel his contract.

Mitchell spoke to Viduka in Newcastle last month and said the striker had mentioned what had happened to his World Cup teammate.

``At the back of his mind is the fact that so much would be expected of him and if he did not produce he would cop the same treatment as John.''

He said he would not be surprised if Viduka stayed with Newcastle to try to help it get back to the Premier League.

``I know a few of the coaches there and they have a huge regard for Mark ... they believe he has been one of the best players to come to the club,'' Mitchell said.

``I don't think he'll come back to Australia to play.''
