Central Coast Mariners Squad for 2009/10 HAL Season

Definately some sense in what you are saying, however we are not mediocre, we are appalling.
However a few new signings can make us competetive this coming season and then we can clear out the dead wood the season after that.
What i don't understand is how we went from being one of only 2 clubs to make a profit (us and  Victory). We make the GF and sell a player for $800K and suddenly we are now running at a huge loss?? Teetering on the brink unable to sign anyone decent.

I think we required a much higher crowd average to turn a profit, we were over 12,700 in season 3 but just scraped in above 10,400 in season 4. This combined with the economic crisis (less sponsorship) the club has generated far less revenue.

+ ACL costs (significant)
+ GFC = less sponsors $

Does there need to be change? Yes
Is what you are advocating the sensible way to do it? No in my opinion.

Booting Lawrie and half the playing roster isn't the way to do things when the salary of the booted players still comes out of the salary cap. Let alone do we have the money to pay out the contracts anyway. we've let go the players that are coming off contract that aren't needed any more and will look to get in better quality to fix the problems.

As for Newcastle, they have finally done what we have done over the course of our time, bought players of known quality from Australia. As for the prize money I think you'll be surprised at just how much that would cost to compete in (even for the winners it would still be a loss making venture I think)

You say your a football supporter, but talk to Darlington fans and see what the prospect of having your club looking like not existing next season feels like. There is no magical pot of gold that the Mariners are sitting on, and if done right these other ventures will go a long way to funding the club for many years. I will take a few years of mediocrity over not existing at all.

Yet some of the most successful clubs have stability in there coaches so it can be argued both ways. At the end of the day it comes down to who else you can get to do the job and if they are better than what we currently have. If there is no one better for what we can afford then we just do a Sydney and replace McKinna with Kosmina or Arnold, hardly appealing.

I will go back to the Clark issue, when you can get a squad member as cover for pretty cheap you take it, since he can a fair chunk of his wage paid as a coach and not a player it makes sense in terms of the salary cap as cover.

Would love to see us win the premiership again, the CL is probably 10 years off for any Australian club. As for the toliet seat, make the 6 and your in with half a chance as has been shown by us making it to the final from the lower positions of qualifying.

:goodpost:Thank you Dru for a grain of common sense amongst all the chaff.

Can people not read, not comprehend or is it that they can do neither? The transfer window is closed. The only players around are offcuts. Either put up with what we can get now or be patient. It's not that hard to get, is it?

Exactly dibo! Also, we do not want the club saying that they are interested in certain players who are still on contract untill at least the window as it is illegal. I.e. perth glory and sunderland.
Just be patient

I have a strangely calm, reasonably not bad, feeling about our likely recruitment targets

I suspect we may see a record amount of "leaked" info and rumours about who our transfer targets are this time round.

The criticism of the ACL recruitment campaign has obviously been that they didn't do enough work to land a big signing or 2. But IIRC the board was all very tight-lipped at that time; there weren't even many rumours circulating. Some of us assume that we don't know what went on behind closed doors, others figure "no smoke = no fire".

Seeing as we have probably the least complete squad for next HAL season (at this stage), I expect we will see a bit more "smoke" blown around this transfer season.

I think your right regarding the no smoke no fire business, for instance no body had any idea we were gonna claim aloisi until we had already signed him, in this respect the club was smart as nothing looks worse than throwing names around and then not delivering, see boy who cried wold chapter 4, however i suspect this recent transfer window and ACL we may very well have been damn close to signing lots of players, just never got confirmed and hence it "appears" as tho the club was nto doing anything at all..

there has been plenty of smoke - travis (now confirmed), the other sheffield lad, doig, sterj, the new caladonian captain, the two serbs, some state league triallists

we only have five positions to fill

I reckon David Carney would be a great signing for the Mariners. Let's get him quick fast because our squad is shit and he will save the day. Also, given out coach is also crap he is so great he will need not be coached.

can carney do any coaching too?
could be an option.

LM OUT, CARNEY IN

I like the way you think Adz.

I also don't think clarky has been singled out on this forum as well. Carney to be the new fitness and conditioning coach as well.
