Central Coast Mariners release four, sign Nicky Travis

CENTRAL Coast have wasted no time in cleaning out their squad following a frustrating Asian Champions League campaign, announcing the cutting of four players this afternoon.[/b]
The Mariners rounded out a disappointing ACL with a 1-0 loss to an understrength Tianjin Teda last night, leaving them without a win in their first foray into Asia.
The loss extended the Mariners' winless streak to 11 games and coach Lawrie McKinna has promised his squad will be given a major makeover before the new A-League season starts in August.
That began today, with the club announcing it would not be re-signing foundation players Andre Gumprecht and Paul O'Grady as well as Greg Owens and Nick Rizzo.
Another loss: Mariners round out horror ACL campaign
"We wish them well. It's just time to move on and refresh and get some new faces," McKinna said.
The club will now turn its attention to recruitment, with McKinna hoping to make at least three new signings before the season starts.
Midfielders Adam Kwasnik and Shane Huke, who both signed for the ACL campaign, will have their contracts extended into the A-League season while 22-year-old Sheffield United midfielder Nicky Travis has agreed to terms with the club.
But McKinna still wants to to recruit some more experienced players to cover for the loss of Tony Vidmar, Tom Pondeljak and John Aloisi in recent years.
Top of their shopping list is Socceroos winger Mile Sterjovski, who has met with club officials, but is weighing up offers from several other interested clubs, including Gold Coast and Perth Glory.
"There's interest but there are another two or three Asian clubs and A-League clubs and still some interest in Europe for him," McKinna said.
"So there's still a long way to go but that type of player would be a huge asset to the club. On and off the field he's a true professional."
McKinna said the Mariners would have a point to prove to their fans next season after a disappointing ACL but denied his side had let the supporters down.
"We've done our best with the squad we've had," McKinna said.
"I think some supporters forget what the team's achieved, maybe short memories.
"But they pay their money and they can say what they want and I'm sure the boys will love next season to show they are a good team."

hardly call this a cleanout.......all they've done is not re-sign 4 players off contract.
And for Lawrie to say ""I think some supporters forget what the team's achieved, maybe short memories." seems to have buried his head in the sand again.

He is bang on the money there, what more could he say? seriously, what more do you want from him at this point given the circumstances of the clubs financial position and his stature with CCM?

Yeah, I don't think its constructive to speak about what the Mariners have achieved in the past when the last 5 months have been pretty disappointing. I'm not saying he is wrong, just that we need to focus on current problems and look to the future. Mentioning the past right now just makes it look like we're not looking forward.

But its true.

I tend to forget that from our last win we have dropped from vying for the premiership to also rans in the ACL which was not as bad as it could have been. In all reality we were only 1 or 2 players away from doing well in the finals, and making the round of 16 in the ACL. Just poor desicions by us to rely on SU for players.

I am posotive we will be up there again for 09 - 10. :-\ :-\ :-\

Sheffield United.

The whole ' what we have achieved ' line doesn't work with me.
In four years we have a 1st and three mid table finishes. Its not bad but it isn't spectacular imo.

Yeah well whoever assembled that squad needs his f**kin arse kicked imo.

Thats the key, no one really knows who has control over the squad selections / salary cap.

Do they?

So there is nothing wrong with his hearing then lol - although you would have been hard pressed to miss the shower of abuse from 6 and 7 (and presumably the other parts of the ground as well).

If the players (present tense) are going to show us that they are a good team next season (future tense) WTF did they play like the did in the ACL?

What will change with THE players?

Given that the European window opens in June there is likely not to be any announcements until then.

How about we wait until then before putting the knife in.

I mentioned the June window in my post in the New Media Man Thread earlier today.

The problem is though,  that the club is pushing ahead with the 'membership' renewals before then & without any great signing news, Marinermick, I suspect a lot of folks won't be renewing too quickly. There is also the contentious issue of the two moved home games to be decided upon and how they manage that with the renewals and these two issues combined may lead a lot of people to hold back.

My renewal plans are as follows:-

If the season ticket doesnt require me to pay for the 2 moved games - renew regardless

If they bill us for the 2 moved games - no way, will buy tickets game by game

I will re-new regardless. I have been disappointed like everyone else but most teams have highs and lows and when we are as low as we are at the moment then I can just hope that we dont plateau and 09/10 will be the climb back out of the mire.

My renewal plan is to upgrade, with everyone seeming to want to ditch memberships they need my money more than ever.

I will be renewing, I love the mariners, I finally have a football team that i can pour my heart and soul into. Lessons are there to be learned, I'm glad that we have shit times every now and then and im glad that i am there to feel the pain each and every time we fail, because when we travel up the F3 and knock the scum out of the finals It is feels THAT much better! If we won every week I would love my team just as much, but my adrenal glands would NOT get the workout that the adrenal glands of a football fan DESERVE
