F*ck Recoba.  F*ck his divine right as well.  C*nt.

Understand what you are saying but in all honesty would you stop supporting CCM if we bought him?

Everyone of us complains we have no Marquee and then we mention names - well here is a name that is available and I'd have him at CCM in a heart beat. (not that it would happen)

I'm sick and tired of our very cautious buys.
Risk can stuff you up, but the rewards if it is pulled off...
I mean on the topic of marquee, I do agree with wat Jaypee said in another topic, that a GK shouldnt be it, provided that we r planning to use marquee spot on someone else which didnt happen.
Same thing here- unless there is a better candidate then we should be havily enquiring

You need money for a marquue and I'm pretty certain we dont have any

I predict some cautious buys from lower UK (perhaps) and NSWPL and us trying to do the best we can with limited resources next season

we've done this every season to date and it has worked with most of the players, hopefully it will work this season

So, we've done this for the start of season 2 and 4, where we've not met high hopes.

We need to look at what we are going to come up against in this upcoming season.

Sydney FC have a marquee who has gone into hiding and is undergoing special training in a bloody big effort to regain his reputation. They also have a new coach, a new owner and a fresh start. They will be dangerous, although their back 4 looks a little weak.

Gold Coast have the potential to really kick ass. Their spine in their best 11 is arguably the best in Australia, and if they are all on the field at the same time and in form, look out.

Perth seem to be very active in the market place, they want to do better and they won't be happy until they are in the Finals.

Melbourne has got Hernandez for the season and the squad looks solid. They will bein the running for the Finals if not the Premiership again.

Adelaide may slip, but if Vidmar can hold the squad together they will make the Finals too.

Newcastle may spring some surprises if they can get their act together.

North Qld. has God. A fit Fowler plus some A-League journeymen may make a show of the comp. and Fergie has his chance to stamp his style on a whole team now.

The only two teams that don't seem to have advanced much is us and Wellington.

Would that have anything to do with the fact we are a small club with no cashed up owner willing to spend $$$ on a high caliber player?

We will always be the "promoted" side in the comp fighting against clubs with bigger resources. Thank God for the salary cap or it would be much worse, not only for us.

Who gives a shit how good the other teams line ups are. Makes it all the more fun when we give em a run for their money. Isn't that what makes the FA cup so exciting?

The next few months will see the Mariners add to their roster. Their is no point adding to it now with games still to be played and players to leave. As FFC Mariner has said, lower UK and NSWPL. LM will almost certainly find someone to do a job. Won't be brilliant or as good as other teams have got but thats the Mariners.

I suppose what has shit me the most over the last few months is the fact that we dont seem to give a shit (Melb away as a classic example) and if we go 1 down, our heads drop.

We need to forget this "we have been very successful so far" shit and knuckle down to being the under dogs and scrap and battle for 90 mins.

IMHO, the chances of us being able to mount a credible finals challenge in V5 is slim to none - but thats the case for 90% of all teams in all leagues anywhere in the world.

What I would like to see is a squad of battlers and journeyman (well organised) and trying their hearts out for 90 mins.

As an example, Stoke on Saturday. Very ordinary collection of footballers TBH, no creativity, no flair. But they are super fit, well organised and work their nuts off for the entire game. They also play to full houses at home every week as their fans recognise that they are battling away as best they can

Not a load of up themselves primma donnas who think that because they have been in 2 GF's and won a comp that they are Barcelona or something.

End rant

Yeh, every year theres several on this forum that bleat and moan saying we're gonna get the wooden spoon or we're not going to make the finals. Now we've got LG saying he is actually gonna buy some players and we've still got the naysayers bleating and moaning.

when i see them sign their name on the dotted line and a photo of them at the stadium in the shirt, ill be happy

its 1 thing to say "we will be bringing in fresh blood, new players, its time for a change" its another thing to find these players that are good enough, get them when they are off contract so we dont have to pay for them as we are not well off, and have them agree to come to our little club for the peanuts we offer them.

You'd think they'd push the "lifestyle benefits" a lot harder in their negotiations, or do they do that already??

i heard in another thread that derby were ready for an end of season clear-out with up to 10 players leaving the club including Zadko and Mile Sterj, should we be looking at some of these ten players or looking else where?

I'd take Sterj in a heartbeat, although the chances of him coming back to Australia pre-WC with Pim in charge are slim to none. Zadko...... if he has lost his ego and does not take up a massive wage if would be worth consideration.

On a different note, I found this article about young Africans moving to the MLS fascinating: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story?id=639208&sec=mls&root=mls&cc=3436
I find the fact that no A-League club has even considered signing young African or Asian talent absolutely ridiculous. In 2008, we had the U/17 and U/19 AFC Championships and the ASEAN Suzuki (Tiger) Cup, I watched alot of games from each tournament on the internet, why weren't members of our coaching staff (or even other A-League clubs) scouting for talent? Current AFC Young Player of the Year Ahmad Khalil is a Drogba like gun, would it hurt to make an inquiry for a loan perhaps? Most of the Kuwaiti and Bahraini national team players are semi-pro's - they seemed like more than decent players to me.

We have an U/20 WC on in Egypt this August. Realistically, we can afford decent players from these participating nations: Costa Rica, Honduras, Venezuela, Uruguay, Paraguay, Tahiti, Hungary, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, Uzbekistan. We need to use some initiative and offer promising foreigners an opportunity for a lifestyle change (and money) before the likes of MLS and smaller Uefa teams do.

I would have thought a few African players in the yoof side would be a sound investment - any good and we can flog them off to Europe

problem is at that age, if they are any good, they are already playing in Reserve and Youth teams in the big Leagues.....

Agree with bear - until we see a player in the shirt and stadium its all talk and no action.

I disagree with mariners4ever - if you think we met expectations this year then your expectations are Low..... We were the Champions the year before (real champs not a one of game), into the ACL.... HIGH expectations and they were far from met last season. 4th is mediocre in a League of 8 teams.... Who cares how big or small a club we are.....

A Marquee is a must. I understand the $$$ issues but lets look at the season we had Aloisi. Our crowd figures were not great until a NAME PLAYER turned up. Then figures went up dramatically. Would love to see the percentage increase pre Aloisi and post for that season. Fact is we are in a Thugby League area and without a Marquee who can put Bums on seats and play good football we will struggle with mediocre crowds again.

i wasnt saying that we met our expectations or my expectations, i was just saying that when you have at our squad over the past 4/5 years we have done well to achieve the success that we have had achieved especially when comparing to the likes of sydney, newcastle and the roar who have convinced "bigger" players to play for them and we havent

No worries - wasn't coming across that way.

Not sure Newcastle have recruited well (washed up old Fat guys etc).... We have had Vidmar and Aloisi so not sure it rings true that we haven't convinced the big names....

definitly agree with the marquee part, a big name will bring in the supporters who are interested but don't see the point of coming when they can watch it on tv, i know i really got into the mariners when we signed viddy. I came to the games just so i could see him play (Although he was injured for a while so icontinually missed him).
We don't need a massive salary player, we just need someone who will have a reputation hat will draw cards, then that results in more money from ticket sales and merchandise

I think Newcastles squad recruits are vastly over rated.

Sasho will not have the impact of sackwhack (although he will bag a few) and Ange wont go a full year with those knees.

Ljubo has the potential to be a stand out but is a nutter and is likely to go off at some point.

Will finish below us - bet on it
