Central Coast Mariners Squad for 2009/10 HAL Season

Really cant see them dropping the finals, especially with state league clubs the chance to go to asia. In time maybe.

Maybe they are looking into the future, since a 6 team finals has already been slated.

But i think without the finals, there needs to be promotion and relegation to keep the average punter interested during the later stages of the season, especially with a longer season.

Though they were hopeful of bringing the cup in this coming season last year, so maybe the last line is just in the future.

But with the biggest crowds of all 4 seasons being the Grand Finals, I doubt they will drop it. Maybe make it a super cup at the end of the year, and ditch the "series"

No way should porter be relegated to bench. Give him the freedom to scream down the flanks and put in quality crosses. He was one of our best this season

i reckon, he was better than pretty much all our defence

Anyone know what kind of money players in the Kuwait National team are on?

They put in a good performance yesterday against supposedly the 'best' HAL players and I think Australia would be an attractive offer for them. Lifestyle, higher quality league(maybe), exposure to media.

Some of them were very technical players, something the mariners desperately need. What are the chances of pursuing a few?
Come on Lawrie and Lyall

Most middle-eastern players are on pretty good coin, as well as pampered lifestyles. Would be very hard to persuade one to come unless money wasnt an issue. Less so maybe places like iraq. But i think kuwait would be in the higher. Even the average wage in places like indonesia is not half bad.

FFT - Elrich As Good As New

EXCLUSIVE: Ahmad Elrich never doubted he would win another fight against serious knee injury and is now all systems go for the Asian Champions League.

Elrich was forced to undergo a knee reconstruction back in September after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament against Queensland Roar.

It was the second time the player had been forced to endure the agony, suffering the same problem in his other (left) knee earlier in his career.

After five months of hard work he's pulled the boots on again and was reintroduced to the action during Central Coast Mariners' two-game tour of China.

Elrich told au.fourfourtwo.com today: "I'm just buzzing, really buzzing to be honest with you. I feel like a kid again.

"It's great to be out there with the boys and preparing for the Champions League. When I did the knee I knew the ACL was the reward to be gained at the end of it.

"Now I just can't wait to get out there and get into it. I've worked hard, back in exactly five months and a massive thank you has to go to Peter Buffon and Denny Shearwood of the Hills Street Sports Medicine Centre.

"They spent several hours on me each day and I think they've got me back into things in record time.

"The coaching staff and the boys have also been great with their support."

Elrich says a positive outlook has also aided his recovery. He said: "What do you do? You have setbacks, you have injuries in sport. It's how you bounce back that says everything about your character."

And the hard work and hours in the gym haven't stripped Elrich of his sense of humour. "Besides, I've got two new knees now," he joked.

Elrich will continue to work hard in preparation for next week's ACL opener against Pohang Steelers at Bluetongue Stadium.

"It's exciting. Exciting for me and exciting for the club. It's a new challenge and one we want to rise to," he said

The former Wellington Phoenix man admits a good start is crucial. He said: "You want to pick up results away but I think your home home is massive. You have to be winning your home games. We want to get off to the best start we can."

The Mariners face Steelers next Wednesday before travelling to face Tianjin Teda.

Unconfirmed word that the FFA are in a bit of a dispute with come clubs about when to run the next HAL season.
FFA apparently wants August-February, whilst clubs apparently want October -> April
Which would you want?

October - April for me, extend the season into Autumn so that the weather cools down for the race to the premiership.
:goodpost: :postcount:  :grouphug: :pirashoot: :pirate: :headbounce: :eek:verhead:

Big and total rumour from another football list:

"Rumour has it that some selected state league clubs from around the country have been invited to meet with the FFA, in a fortnight, with a view to having an FFA Cup competition involving both state & A League clubs. The winner of the cup would get an Asian Champions League spot and the A League winner getting the other ACL spot. The finals system will be dropped".

This would be great news and also allow say 1 & 2 to go to the ACL maybe.

We only have 2 spots for at least a couple more years

Given the quality of the crossing in Canberra the other night, a fit Elrich would have to be eyeing off a spot

There was crossing in that game?
I thought it was called a 'clearance' when it is done from your own half...

According to TWG today, there is only 1 professional Kuwait player so surely money can't be too much of an issue.
Language, Family and Culture would be the only deterrents.

With no Greg Owens included in the fully fit squad for the game against Pohang I assume that he will not be part of the Mariners' plans for A League V5?

Well he wasn't part of the Mariners plans for A League V4, so I'm not sure why there'd be a change! :p

I wonder what kind of money he was on for us? He was a decent player and was coming off a good season (just a bad final game) for Adelaide so im banking he was on atleast 150k?

As sad as it is, Greg Owens has been an oxygen thief and Squad spot waster for the last 2 seasons. He came to us needing medical treatment and the end result of that and further operations & treatment has been that he is a lot slower and very tentative going into challenges.

With the ball at his feet he can still set up plays, and push beautiful passes through some very slender gaps, but he is slow - too slow - for the A-League, and he needs to get his head around what he has been through and move forward or end up being dropped from the squad.
