New roles for local boy Brown after announcing retirement

The Central Coast Mariners historic first ever player signing, Damien Brown, will head the Mariners grassroots community initiatives and assist with the clubs maiden National Youth League (NYL) campaign after today announcing his retirement from competitive football.

One of the most successful Central Coast products of the past decade, Brown will step away from the playing field at the conclusion of the Mariners pre-season trial match program to assume the role of Youth Development Co-ordinator with his hometown club.

In this new role, Brown will assist Mariners Development Manager and NYL coaching spearhead Alex Tobin and will also oversee the implementation of the Mariners school holiday camps week long coaching clinics that will cater for boys and girls aged between 6 and 14 years.

With tertiary qualifications in Exercise Science and Secondary Education, Brown is an absolutely ideal candidate to organise the Mariners latest community initiative, which will kick off for the first time during Julys school holiday period.

Specific to the role of assisting Tobin, Brown will develop and monitor the Mariners Youth Academy structures both on the Central Coast and at each of the seven grassroots associations across the state that the Mariners have formalised partnerships with.

"From day one, Damien has been as genuine a club and family man at the Mariners as anyone could ever hope to meet and were truly thankful for his outstanding contribution to the success of the Mariners on and off the pitch," said Mariners Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman.

"It is indeed a tremendous coup for our club to be able to draw upon Damiens expertise away from the pitch now that he has decided to put his playing days behind him and Im delighted that we will continue to involve this exceptional individual in the day to day operations of the Mariners."

Brown retires from competitive football having accumulated 58 appearances in all competitions for the Mariners over three seasons and netting three goals in such time.

Prior to linking with the Mariners, Brown had made a further 98 appearances in the National Soccer League across three clubs the Newcastle Breakers, the Canberra Cosmos and the Parramatta Power.

Most memorably, Brown was a cornerstone member of the Mariners unforgettable inaugural campaign by making an appearance in twenty Hyundai A-League matches, including a start in the Hyundai A-League Grand Final.

"Ive dedicated the better part of the past two decades to professional and semi-professional football and I strongly believe that now is the best possible time for me to close that chapter of my life and start a new one," said Brown.

"Ive thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Mariners as a professional player and with my added experience as a school teacher Im really looking forward to making the transition to the field of youth development, where Ill relish the chance to continue to work with the fantastic players and administration that we have at the club at present.

"Nurturing the development of our youth and grassroots relationships on the Central Coast and its surrounding regions is paramount to the future success of the Mariners and for football in Australia in general and Im very much looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead.

"Im also very thankful for the opportunity to work alongside Alex Tobin in the NYL, which in itself is very exciting for everyone involved with the game."

A fitting reward for a great guy and good solid clubman (not the Mrdja kinda club either).

I believe he will be a great asset to the club going forward - pity he has jacked it in completely though, the Lightning need him

:)

What exactly makes him a dickhead though? Because he missed a breakfast and didn't get along with Muscat? People said the same things about Sasho when he joined and there haven't been any problems with him yet.

Didn't get along with Muscat, eh? Sounds like a pretty natural thing to me.....sign him up straight away!

well as a point of interest, if Lawrie had a chance he would probably sign Muscat up right away

The Sun newspaper in the Uk reports that Mark Bosnich has been approached by an a-league club whilst in Australia but he wants remain in England but he is in discussions with a couple of clubs.
Who was the club who approached Bosnich?
I think it is between Mariners, Roar and Glory anyone got any ideas!!!

I didnt know that they had signed Juric, so no, not glory.

Bozza said he swore he had not heard anything from roar (tho he probably swore he was clean at Chelsea, so I dunno), so possibly us, with his connection to Crawley.

Mick seemed pretty positive a week or so ago that he was no chance for us, but if we sign him, do it NOW to get loads of game time behind him before season proper

At first I was thinking it a bad thing to sign someone with his past, but the more I look at it, the more I like the idea (possibly the only time ill change my mind on ANYTHING lol). Former no1 keeper on earth, gets messed up with drugs, gets clean, and shows kids the bad side of drugs and also what is possible if you get your act together and sort your shit out

Bring him on

I'm not sure if we would sign him. The whole story seems pretty far fetched to me.

I think he'd be a risk. I know he trained with QPR etc but it's dificult to see how he could be up to speed by the time the season starts. Lawrie's not the type of bloke to risk signing players even if it's short term as in this case.

I do think he'll sign a keeper from somewhere though. If he does, not sure what it means for Trotty long term. No good having a back up keeper if he doesn't have the confidence of the boss doing the job when your number one's out.

Former Empoli midfielder Frank Lagana is attracting big A-League interest.

The AIS graduate is being courted by Central Coast Mariners and Adelaide United, however he is favouring a return to Europe after several years playing in Victoria's Premier League with Oakleigh.

off tribalfootball though so take it with a grain of salt
