Good post Soccersensei, I agree with you there.

It will be frustrating for me (especially after last weekends slapping of Sydney) if that the quality of teams that we haven't seen yet in trials has risen also. Time will soon tell.

Mmmmmm, It's been funny for me over the last few months... I've kept silent on this issue because I really have felt I must be in a deluded minority - especially considering the TAB and even the coaches... But I really just haven't been so phased by any of the other clubs "big signings"

I was concerned we hadn't recruited actively enough, but now I am at peace.
Lawrie, Lyall and co have done us proud as ever.

As i've stated before, striker wise, I was actually content to see Aloi$i go and from what I saw at this particular junction in time, Dylan is of like or better worth. Matt Simon is clearly on the rise, Sasho looks better than I've seen him in any season yet, and Nik, well, all things aside, most agree on his immense potential... and it really is now or never time isn't it, and I think he will.
Thats a considerable bloody front line.

I also wouldn't swap a Collosimo, Monkey boy or say Trinidad for our Jedi, Caceres or Hutcho powered midfield... Not to mention Porter who could be the major surprise of the HAL season if he emulates anything close to Sundays form.

Defensively, Heff, Wilko coming back in form, Boogs returning, Clarkey the gifted heart strong veteran, Ossie and now D D Apuzzo and pedj the ledg - I think we stack up against any back line in HAL and have far more talented depth than most.

My two biggest concerns "were" defensive depth (done) and as Brett expressed creative attacking play in the middle of the park that would link with our forward line.... but after seeing Adrian and Ahmad (clearly fitter and flourishing under Clarkey expert ministrations) and the way they inter played in particular with big Dyl and Porter (some really beautful play) ...So any other teams "key signings" are really going to have to STEP THE HELL UP to convince me we are anything less than serious silverware contenders again.

TBH, I do see "a squad" not a star speckled team...
but it's a squad with some quality flare now imo, yet one that can clearly also still battle it out with the accustomed heart we love our yellow army so much for...

so...IMHO...

Mariners squad v4 >>>>>>>>>>>>> Mariners squad v3

Fantastic summary, I have felt the same.  After watching them play at the weekend I am convinced we will be challenging for the title and in the GF.  The squad is far stronger than last years and I don't think any of the others have improved as much as ours.

What we also have this year is lots of options where as last year we were a bit one dimensional.  This year we have height, pace, skill and if fi the best striker in Australia up front.  We have a midfield that can battle it out with anyone but have also added the skill and creativity we lacked last year.  The defence looks to have good depth and if we sign Bosnich it looks as though we will have the best 2 keepers in the league.

As I have mentioned before in another post I think this squad has been put together with Asia in mind as that will require a completely different standard of play in terms of possesion fottball that is not as crash and bash as the A-League which this squad looks to be capable of playing.

My Prediction - Premiers and GF Winners as well as progressing from group stages (Semi?) in Asia.

QLD scare me. They seem to be able to find the back of the net now, and for 3 years that has been what has held them back. Top 2 finish. Cant see us beating them this weekend.

I agree on the scary part, but I think it will be a 50/50 game with the team that scores 1st coming out ontop and the other playing catch up for the rest of the match.

QLD look weaker at the back though IMO and if they lose Moore at all could be in trouble?

As those Kwasnik haters would say "If Kwassy can score against QLD then so can Sash"

I don't think they look that scarey! They scored 1 against sydney and 1 against NZ. If they had destroyed either of these teams then maybe there would be something to slightly worry about but i don't think they deserve the term scarey yet.

In all honesty i reckon we look more dangerous than them.
Kruse and Zullo need to prove themselves this year as consistent and there will be alot more pressure on them.

I agree, top 2 spot or the league is a must. I have really under estimated some our depth recently but the signing of Pedj makes our defence look steely. I hope they Heff Wilks Boogs Pedj as the starters and who knows who will be keeper.

I think MVFC and Adelaide will be much stronger than the Roar. Especially Adelaide they recruited well and their defence looks great. Heaps of injuries to their defence last year so will a fit crew plus the addition of Sasa Ognenovski, I think they will be hard to break down. But who knows how their new strikers will go time will tell.

I think Melbourne were really hitting their straps towards the end of last year with hernandez seeming to really settle into the creative spearhead of that team. They have strengthened their defence with Thwaite and their new Costa Rican has got a good reputation, so obvious potential for them.

I was also worried about the depth of our squad but i can't wait now. I don't even think we need a Marquee at this stage of the season. Maybe something Lawrie will think of if we get off to a shaky start. I've been bagging porter recently but he owned the mid field against  Bling and I really think he is suited to CM. Also Someone alluded to the Jedi perhaps being the link between our mid field and attackers. What do you all reckon??? Why not!! Jedi CAM sounds good.

We can go back to back on the Plate guys, there is such a good balance to our squad now and everyone should be pumped! f**k I'm pumped up just writing this stuff!!!!! Bring on Round 1 v the Scum

I am also in the group of not too confident of our chances this season. But am more confident now, after the weekend, with the re-signings, bojic, and probably bozza.

I look forward to looking the clown, I really do. It's just my opinion that if he is signed you, Lawrie, Lyall and the rest of the dreamers will have to start being realistic when it comes to over the hill players who are living of past glories.

.... blah blah etc.... It has to be a publicity stunt because signing him defies logic!!!!!!

So, uhhh...

Clown ;)

Pedj will see his fair share of action, centre backs and fullbacks tend to be carded the most out of any team

Yeah, I have already acknowledged that i was wrong. Thanks for reminding me. However I read today that that game has not guaranteed him a contract and he still had a lot of work to do. Which of couse means they are ready to sign him asap. Only 7100 last sunday versus the bling and the atmosphere rocked having bozza there. So you are now talking to the converted!!!

Thats true, however when ossie came on last sunday he played on the wing so maybe Lawrie sees him more in midfield and maybe will start Pedj at RB. That was what I was thinking anyway when I did the post.
