CC MARINERS vs JETS R1 HAL 10

We have 4 creative players in Kim, Caceras, Fitzy & Vernes and arguably Jacob Poscoliero... we started the game with only one ..

Sim, Cernak, ahead of Caceras, Fitzy & Vernes ..

I got the feeling a side was chosen hoping not to loose...

I watched the MV V WSW and SFC V City ... and wonder how we could win without our more creative players on the park and we don't have Ibini returning to help this year...

My mate Angry said exactly the same....."why are we set up to get a draw when we are the home side?"

Hadn't thought of it that way. I'd like to win the Cup - but the HAL should be our priority
I suspect we underestimated the Jests today. They hadn't been setting the world on fire in their preseason, and our youth side (essentially) gave their full strength side a bit of a lesson in Mudgee.

Just did a quick look on some web sites and we are being given a huge thumbs down by everybody ... 442, theroar, and some fan forums ..

We will need a huge improvement to get past the Nix's next week.

First 20 we were indeed Gash.
However...
Derby's are always hard fought and often grim.
Opening games are often disjointed, hard fought and grim.
Hot weather and it's demands usually affects the quality of players decisions and movement... making games hard fought and grim.
Games where the other side is committed to pressing and leaving the foot in usually make for poor technique, disjointed, hard fought and grim games.

So my totally out there conclusion... is that this was a disjointed, grim and hard fought 1st round derby win in trying conditions.

I'll take that.

Reading too much else into this is moving beyond what is reasonable to conclude I think. And I will definitely save any Mossy critiques until there is more than one data point.

That neither side looked all that flash is no real surprise. I think the Jest are also better than they have been for a while now and people may well be under rating them.

All in all, that's highly unlikely to be the best game we play all season... and if' it's the worst game. We'll be extremely competitive.

Other thoughts,,,
Imo beyond unforced errors and a horrible start, our main weaknesses were Roux's and Rosie's first halves and Kim - that was hard to watch as far as 'm concerned. Monty also had a very slow start I thought.
Mane was my MOM. Great debut.
Caceres should start over Kim - and also play 10 over Trifiro.
Fitzy over Sim.
Need consistent penetration from our wide backs. Possible they were told to sit back early... or preserve some energy? Costly if so.
Still not a fan of two DM's.
Mane and Duke could cause havoc with a better midfield behind them than todays lineup.
Worried Kim is not up to the job and we need another RM. Maybe Cernak can step up.
Reaffirmed that Bernie and Weemac are big losses. Flores less so.

Duke in the Nick of Time
Phil Moss got it all wrong today but Mitchell Duke got it right with his winner in the last seconds. On a beautiful Central Coast day, under blues skies and in front of a pretty decent crowd, but on a playing surface that was below recent standards, the Mariners started with their new signing, the Senegalese Malick Mané but the other new man, the Hungarian Richie Vernes did not even make the bench; Marcos Flores did, though, for the Jets.
In a scrappy first half, typical fare for an opening game to any season, Malick Mané was the shining light. Almost everything of positive note came from his skill and direct running; he was an instant hit with the crowd.
In the 11th minute a barnstorming run, an unstoppable combination of brute strength and pace, had the Jets desperately scrambling to block his shot. Two minutes later he raced past two defenders on the right but the Mariners could not capitalise on his hard low cross. Duke could have done more here; he should have attacked the ball but he stepped away from the goal anticipating a cut back.
Apart from Mané, the Mariners were doing their best to allow the Jets to compete in the game. Passing from the back was slow, predictable and inaccurate; the midfield was nonexistent. The Jets high press was causing problems but then Duke burst into life with a strong run and fed Mane; Sim and Kim combined neatly and won a free kick on the edge of the penalty area. Mane took the kick but it was weak and easily blocked but then came a handball and this time Kim took the free and was inches away from an opening goal with Birghitti struggling.
Despite the Mariners struggling for fluency Mané had lifted them and he went on another powerful run, surging past hapless Jets defenders before again having the shot blocked. Moments later clever footwork from Mané put Josh Rose was clear in the penalty area but he couldn’t quite get his feet together and Birghitti blocked the shot; the irrepressible Mané had another shot blocked from the rebound.
The Jets then showed they too could be dangerous as Jaliens intelligently intercepted and set up a counter attack from which Newcastle scored but luckily, very luckily, for the Mariners it was disallowed for offside with the defence flat footed.
The Jets started the second half well with real purpose and Reddy was almost caught out by an awkward shot from Neville; Bosnar tidied up the spilled ball. Duke responded with a wonderful run down the left and set up Sim for a clear shot but he horribly miscued. Five minutes later Rose rolled back the years and had time and space on the left after good work from Kim to set up an easy goal for the eager Duke but somehow placed the cross too far away.
The Jets caught them out again, a flowing move putting John Steele away from the defence, but his lob over the helpless Reddy was too strong and the Mariners breathed again. And then bad boy Griffiths brought Reddy to a fine full length save. Suddenly it was all the Jets, they looked the more likely, changes had to be made.
Flores came on but more importantly Kim was replaced by Trifiro; about an hour too late in my opinion. Bosnar produced a masterly tackle to snuff out a promising Jets move and then Trifiro won the ball and fed Mané but Sim’s right footer from the cross was too soft and straight to trouble the keeper. Fitzgerald came on for Sim as the Mariners looked to crank it up.
Bosnar then lined up a free kick from 40 metres – why not, he had scored from this distance last season against Birghitti – but the shot went well over. And then Hutchinson volleyed a loose ball just wide – that would have been something to celebrate!
As the game wound down Trifiro headed wide from a Roux cross; Roux then left the game suffering from cramp, replaced by Cernak. Flores suffered the ignominy of a yellow card when he could not catch the fleet footed [sic] John Hutchinson. Reddy superbly went full length to defuse a cross and as the game seemed to be coming to an end the Mariners struck.
A regulation free kick on the left; Trifiro crossed, right footed, to the far post and there was Mitchell Duke on the blindside stealing in to knock the ball home for the winner. It was straight from the Sasho Petrovski handbook; it ain’t over until the Band stops playing...
Mane was easily our best, although he clearly tired late on, with Duke providing willing support. Moss got it wrong by playing Duke out wide; a waste of his talent. He is a goalscorer but his only shot of the game was that late winner. Moss got it all wrong too by having Kim as one of the two to defend from the front; a ridiculous ask of a very lazy player. One close free kick and a couple of neat passes interspersed with frequent moments of sitting on the ground rubbing his leg (four times, five times?) do not make a worthwhile contribution to the Mariners cause; at no time did he appear to want to dictate the play, to control the game. It really annoys me that willing, better, and cheaper, young Australian players such as Caceres, Trifiro and Fitzgerald are kept out of the side.

Well, a win is a win. And I dont see the problem with Kim. He provided a decent amount of danger. That freekick was lush :D

Also, I had a question for ya. I want to watch the Mariners from a proper livestream, HQ and everything, from the Netherlands. Is there a paid subscription service where I can get a guaranteed good quality stream? Those free ones tend to pix elate a "little"

http://www.soccer.livesport.tv/

It is a legitimate feed, not a dodgy one. It is not expensive but can be a bit slow to load.

The team didn't seem fit to me. There was no energy or movement, particularly in the first half.

In the past we have slowly built into a season so I'm hoping that's what we are doing again, although perhaps the cancelled pre-season games didn't help.

I like the look of Sim but Fitz must start ahead of him. He adds so much more to the team.

Not sure if Rose was on the nose or something but the team didn't want to give him the ball. There were three or four times he was completely unmarked, and players looked at him and went to someone else. Deliberate tactic maybe? Strange if so.

Mane = legend already. We have sorely lacked someone who shoots on sight and attacks the goal like he does, and he has a great work rate as well. Strong on the ball and can beat a player too. With some decent service he should have a great year.

Happy to win over the scum but hoping we have lots of improvement to come.

There is also a new contender for worst Fox commentator. Ned "I'll tell you a bit more about how good I was" Zelic. Put the boot into us as many times as possible too.

. i expected a line-up to cope with a physical opponent and an eye on an upcoming cup game ... and i think that is what we got with one exception - i was surprised to see kim start fearful that it wouldn't take much for newcastle to take him out of the game

. people, including mossy, have been talking kim up in the pre-season ... but from what i have seen (the game at lisarow and last night) - it still seems that i could take a knock better than him. he has made himself a target and the referees seem well aware of his antics - he is not winning himself many fans with coasties

. the highlight for me would have been hutch had he made that shot ... but it has to be eminem (mane) ... and probably not for what everybody is praising him for. in contrast to kim ... he continued to chase a ball after being fouled instead of going to ground and was rewarded with a free-kick when his efforts proved in vain. it was good to see from the player and even better to see from the referee, that is the type of behaviour i like to see encouraged

. while on mane, it is refreshing to have a mariner so willing to shoot ... but maybe not every time, if there is a better option

yeah , I expect we'll get a bit of that . at 25 he's not gunna change much about how he plays.
but he's a guy worth adapting a game plan round.

It is nice to have a striker that isn't afraid to have a dig. I can't count the number of times in the past where I've yelled out "shoot, FFS!!!!". It won't be long until he gets criticised for shooting too much… but for those that do, please remember the feeling of frustration of days gone by where we would dick around with the ball on the edge of the box and try and walk it into the goal.

I know a forward needs to be a bit selfish, but I also wonder if some of it isn't frustration with seeing good balls go unused, to be honest. I noted a couple of times both in this game and in the cup games, that he looked more than a little unimpressed, that he worked hard to keep a ball and cross it, only for none to be on the receiving end.
Hopefully they'll learn though, because that's the kind of thing that leads to players wanting to leave.

I'm very disappointed with Kim, he's soft. I don't like divers and that's what I see in him. So obviously did the ref, surprised he didn't wave his yellow card about.
I was listening to the ABC commentators while waiting to get out of the CCLC car park and they were saying the Jests have given all other teams the blueprint for stopping him - don't need illegality, just be very physical.
I didn't see too much from him to justify him starting and when he was subbed it should have been Caceres not Cernak coming on. Not that I have a problem with Cernak, he did a couple of good things last night, but Caceres is far more dangerous.
I think we made a big mistake getting this guy, we need to cut our losses and move him on.

Shallow win today (although its against the Jets and its been 6 years since they have won at Gosford), left the ground feeling worried about the rest of the season.

Really disappointed in the amount of turnovers from the team last night, especially off throw ins and sloppy passes.

Lacking an attacking flare and cohesion that we had over the last couple of seasons, im hoping that this will come soon otherwise we are going to have a long season.

If we play like we did today against City or Victory we'll get smashed!

Hope i'm wrong!

ps: Kim is soft as butter, someone needs to toughen him up a bit, goes down way too easy!

Probably one of the worse games of football I've seen in a while.....In saying that it's 3 points against the scum so can't be that sad.

Both teams looked pretty poor and unless there's an improvement most peoples pre season predictions of us and the scum down the bottom could be correct.

Big positive like others have said was Mane.Once he drops that pie gut he will be twice as good.Makes smart runs and actually HAS A GO FARKEN! Maybe one time to many but his positivity is refreshing.
I just HOPE he doesn't become disinterested by Moss' horrendous tactics.

Have also heard Vernes could be slightly out of favour already.....hopefully not.
