Perth Glory hope to sign former Netherlands star Marc Overmars
By Braden Quartermaine
May 03, 2009 Perth Glory have set their sights on reborn former Ajax, Arsenal and Barcelona star Marc Overmars as a marquee signing for next A-League season.

Glory coach David Mitchell met with the 36-year-old ex-Netherlands midfielder in Holland during his recent European raid.

"We certainly discussed coming to Australia and he was pretty keen. We've made a concerted effort to make it pretty exciting down here. We're trying to get real quality in," said Mitchell.

Former Uruguay and Inter Milan star Alvaro Recoba, currently with Greek side Panionios, has indicated he is keen on a move to Australia but Glory appear to be one of four A-League clubs competing for his signature.

Overmars is currently at Dutch second-tier club Go Ahead Eagles, where he began his illustrious career in 1990.

Crucially, that is the club that produced fellow former Netherlands international and Glory midfielder Victor Sikora. Sikora's input could be key to ambitious Glory completing the coup.

Overmars returned to the game last year after being retired for four years. He was forced into retirement prematurely in 2004 with a knee injury.

The fairytale return began when he played in a tribute match for former national teammate Jaap Stam last July and stunned onlookers with his pace and skill. Clubs around Holland were soon on the phone asking if he would make a comeback.

Overmars claimed he was more surprised than anybody with the decision, saying "maybe someone wants to make it into a movie".

Glory are now trying to convince Overmars his script, which took him from Ajax in Holland to Highbury and the Nou Camp, ends on the other side of the world at Members Equity Stadium.

Former club champion David Tarka and Brazilian warhorse Amaral have been shown the door as Glory clear the decks to announce a string of overseas signings in the next month.

Former Barclays Premier League defender Andy Todd, 34, is set to be the first unveiled.

Blimey! Glory are on a buying frenzy... Although, I have heard a lot of names mentioned - all in their mid to late thirties and not a great deal of pen to paper (other than the all but finalised Jacob Burns). I guess they will all be revealed in the coming weeks. Wish the same headlines were being written about the Mariners.

I'm happy we're not signing more 30+ yr old players.

True, but we have lost a lot of experience since the departure of Aloi$i, Sasho, Tommy P and Vidmar. We need someone like Bozza (maybe not Bozza but someone like him) to help the younger players. I have no doubt that Aloi$i had a massive impact on Matty Simon's development as a player.

Agree absolutely, but we can't go signing36 years olds who will only have one maybe 2 seasons in them. Unless we know for sure they're in top shape and will be able to pass on skills and experience to younger players. We need to focus on building a team that will grow over the next few seasons. Not one that will retire over the next few seasons.

I agree with the opinion of being happy we are not signing any more 30+ year olds, or at least I hope that's what generally happens over the next few years.  As mentioned by some others, we need pace and it's not going to come from old guys.  Young, speedy players is what we need to focus on recruiting.

ADELAIDE United has been offered the services of exciting FC Koln midfielder Thomas Broich from the German Bundesliga.

The German's agent Rob Schneider sent Adelaide's football department DVDs of the former under-21 international, nicknamed Mozart for his love of classical music and literature.

Broich, 28, is out of contract at the end of the Bundesliga season. He is keen to play in the A-League after falling in love with Australia on holiday last year.

This is absolute BS. Aloisi had nothing to do with Matty. It was all G.Arnold at the olympics. Look no further than that.

I'm starting to understand why they call this period "Silly season"

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/article2412969.ece

KANU is ready to bring his decade-long Premier League career to an end by making a lucrative move to Australian side Perth Glory. Portsmouth FA Cup final hero Kanu, who netted the winner in the 1-0 Wembley victory over Cardiff last May, has not played enough games to trigger a clause earning him a new one-year deal.

The former Arsenal stars agent Samuel Okoronkwo said: Kanu wants to play football and would consider Australia."

Nigerian international Kanu, 32, has netted 21 goals in 91 appearances since joining Pompey on a free transfer from West Brom in the summer of 2006 but has started only two Premier League games this season.

Perth had been lining up a move for Birmingham striker Kevin Phillips, who is now likely to remain at St Andrews following their promotion to the top flight.

Why don't the Mariners have more of this "get your name out there" type of rumour press.

eg. Keane SNUBBED by Sydney, Davids to Sydney, Garrincha to Roar

Im not sure how constructive this stuff is for getting your name out there, but it keeps the name of the club fresh in peoples minds and conversations over the watercooler at work.

Plz note I am not writing off the Kanu rumour just yet...

+1

Leak to press that you are in negotiations for 2 high profile UK based players

Ring Man united and ask to speak to the CEO. Should it actually happen say that you want to buy ronaldo and Tevez.

CEO laughs and hangs up.

Leak to press that you cant confirm or deny rumours that Ronaldo is coming to Gosford

Tribal Football and the Tele would run with it
