A-League Transfers and Rumours

Maybe he has a good publicist but you would imagine that the NSW HAL clubs would have had a good long look by now and made a decision.

GVE seems to be more willing to take a punt than we do and he passed so I reckon we wouldnt give him a go.

Having said that, an Iraqi international v our current midfield would make him worth a trial pre season

The Sterj coming back to Australia with GC, Perth and an unamed other A-League club in the hunt.

Apparently GC are struggling to put him under the cap and his deal is not that good, and Perth are chasing others for their marquee.

Could the Mariners be the third party?

Here: http://www.smh.com.au/news/sport/football/a-league/european-club-influx-will-spice-up-aleague-preseason/2009/05/08/1241727604418.html

Meanwhile, Socceroos winger Mile Sterjovski has opted to reject lucrative offers from Asia to return home to the A-League, where three clubs are vying for his signature. Sterjovski, 29, has been abroad for nine years since leaving former NSL club Parramatta Power, and had spells in France, Switzerland and Turkey before moving to English Championship side Derby County last year. Although he has another year remaining in his contract with the Rams, the club has made it clear it wants to offload its higher wage-earners.

In recent weeks, Sterjovski has received offers from China, South Korea and Japanese side JEF United Chiba, but instead prefers to continue his career in Australia, not least for family reasons.

For several weeks, Perth Glory and Gold Coast United have been vying for his signature, but in the past few days a third club has reportedly entered the race. Perth are considering making Sterjovski their marquee player - but much will depend on negotiations with Uruguayan superstar Alvaro Recoba, who at this stage is the preferred choice. Talks with Recoba were expected to reach a decisive stage overnight.

Gold Coast already have a marquee player for the next three years - Socceroos midfielder Jason Culina - but have offered a deal that would have kept Sterjovski inside the salary cap by steadily increasing his wages over the next three seasons. Despite the attraction of playing alongside best mate Culina, it's believed Sterjovski is less than enthused by the offer.

Meanwhile on 442:
Gold Coast United manager Miron Bleiberg weighed into the saga by saying, "We're getting close. It's a complicated issue but I'm interested to sign him and he's interested to come here."

"He doesn't want to go to Perth because it's far away from his family (in New South Wales)," Bleiberg claimed.
hmmmm......

Unless the Mariners review what they can offer a marquee player we won't be signing Sterjovski, from what I've heard Perth have some good coin on the table.

Sydney have a marquee already, so the NSW club is either us or the scum. I'd rather Recoba but another Mile would be lovely. :)

Recoba has a pea-heart as he is known to disappear in crunch matches, also he is carrying a few injuries, I don't think he would be a good marquee for us (football wise)

Recoba & Mrdja - that would be quite a 'spineless' spine in the top end of the field, wouldn't you think?

I can't believe that people would reject Recoba on football grounds. Money wise we are unlikely to be able to compete with other offers. However as an left mid, attacking mid or striker I would have him in a minute for his general play. That's without thinking about his dead ball skill.

In the HAL, a player like Recoba has to perform at his own level once or twice a game and you have 3 points.

The other 10 players are there to keep a clean sheet and give him the ball.

You're not wrong, but i feel he would be the type of marquee that would show up with an injury, play two or three matches and showcase his skill, then be out with a strain and then we don't see our marquee for a month or so i.e Juninho for Sydney FC.
