Adrian Leijer determined to succeed in England

ADRIAN Leijer will again seek a loan to a Championship club if he misses out on game time at Premier League side Fulham next season.

The Jan Juc soccer star is back home for a six-week break at the end of the English season, after having an arthroscope to clean out his knee two weeks ago.

After an Olympics campaign that saw him unused in Beijing, and then criticism of his fitness level from his club when he returned to Fulham, Leijer was loaned out to Norwich City in January.

The 23-year-old played in four games there - starting just once - and was an unused sub in three other games, but said the experience gave him back his love for the game.

"I really enjoyed the loan. I didn't play as much as I would have liked to, but I think just dropping down that level, I was more comfortable in the environment and really enjoyed it, and I suppose I got a bit of confidence back as well and a bit of belief in my own game," Leijer said.

"I think when you're at that Premier League level and things aren't going the way you'd like, you start doubting yourself, but dropping back gave me that bit of confidence and I really enjoyed my football for the last three or four months at Norwich.

"Premier League's a very high standard and, I suppose, I felt I fit in well at Championship level. Whether I go on loan back to Championship next season or not, that remains to be seen.

"I've spoken to a lot of people and they've said (making it in the EPL) is hard work, and if it was easy everyone would be doing it, so I'll just keep at it and keep working hard. My attitude is probably what's got me there and it's what has to keep me there.

"I'd love to get game time, I think I'm at the stage where I really need game time now. That's something that I hope will happen next season, but at the moment it's time to switch off and have a mental break more than anything."

Norwich has been relegated to the third-tier competition for next season after finishing third last.

Leijer, who has about 12 months to run on his current contract, said his position at Fulham was complicated further by its qualification for the next UEFA competition, Europa League, starting next season.

"It's a difficult one, we've just qualified for Europe, so that's a lot more games for the club. Whether he signs more players, which I dare say he will, remains to be seen," Leijer said.

"But I'll just keep grinding away and obviously see what happens in the next couple of months. Whether I stay there or I go on loan, you never know what could happen.

"They can do anything with my contract whenever they want, but obviously I haven't had game time and haven't done anything yet, so I'll just be seeing what I can do in the next 12 months, and at the end of that re-assess and see what's best for my career if nothing happens next season."

Leijer, who was king of the kids at a visit to the Surf Coast Football Club this week, said he would love the opportunity to play for Fulham against his former team Melbourne Victory in a friendly in Melbourne in July.

"That's six weeks away, I'd love to play against the Victory. I've already been up there and seen the boys and that's a special part of my football career so far, so if I get a chance to play against the Victory boys, that'd be fantastic," he said.

Roar look to have a good signing here .... well maybe he hates the life he has,... so maybe he will fit in in QLD.

BOB MALCOLM has revealed sickening sectarian abuse has forced him to start a new life on the other side of the WORLD.

The former Rangers star is no angel.

He's made mistakes in the past and let himself down.

He's the first to admit that.

But Malcolm has matured in recent years - he's learned his lessons.

Yet there are some who simply refuse to forgive and forget. And it's those twisted bigots who are driving Malcolm away to Australia and a new career with Brisbane Roar.

The former Motherwell midfielder - who jets off to Oz in two weeks - last night revealed: "I will miss my family, but there is nothing else worth staying here for. ............. and on it goes

Tomas in talks with FFA over Adelaide United ownership

EXCLUSIVE
http://www.melbournevictory.net/forum/showthread.php?t=53396

Melbourne Knights chairman Matt Tomas, along with Mansion88 betting agency, have been linked with the potential buy out of A-League franchise Adelaide United.

CroExpress can reveal that the consortium is currently in talks with Football Federation Australia, looking at the prospect of buying the majority stake in the financially embattled United.

Tomas confirmed during the week that the talks were taking place, and also made known the possibility of clubs within the Croatian community becoming a collective of sister clubs.

Were in talks with the FFA over buying out Adelaide and looks like we will reach a conclusion in the next two weeks, he said.

We plan to have clubs like the Melbourne Knights and other state league clubs across the nation of that stature, throw their weight behind the Adelaide franchise, in the mould of a feeder club,

Adelaide is regarded as one of the most successful clubs in the four-year history of the A-League. It won the minor premiership in season one, has made two of the past three grand finals and finished runner-up in the 2008 Asian Champions League.

Financially, the franchise is yet to achieve any success despite on-field progress, posting consecutive $2 million losses in the 2007 and 2008 financial years.

The FFA took full control of Adelaide United's franchise earlier this month when owner Nick Bianco handed the licence back, after weeks of speculation.

In what has been a shaky off-season at an administrative level for the A-League and the FFA, which also took back the owners licence to the Brisbane Roar franchise, criticism has mounted over the viability of the leagues future expansion.

Bianco, a prominent South Australian businessman and community leader, had been forced to divest his interest in the Reds because of financial problems with his company, Bianco Constructions.

Although Bianco said he did not want to part with the club and has not ruled out becoming involved again, Adelaide United chief executive Sam Ciccarello has been reported in saying that a number of parties expressed their interest.

The FFA will look to ensure that potential investors display a long term commitment in not only the franchise, but in the promotion of the growing game itself, and whether the Tomas/Mansion syndicate has what is required looks to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Officials at Adelaide United have declined to comment on their predicament.

Mansions involvement in the venture continues their professional relationship with Tomas, after securing the Melbourne Knights major sponsorship and stadium naming rights to their Somers Street complex earlier this year.

An attractive prospect for the FFA is the Asian connection that Mansion holds, which could provide added exposure in Asia for the Adelaide franchise, as it has done for the Melbourne Knights and more notably, Tottenham Hotspurs.

If the takeover indeed does take shape, it leaves the potential sister clubs in a delicate situation, after reports of an eight-man FFA taskforce considering the possibilities of a potential second division, which would derive the majority - if not all - of its teams from state leagues around the country.
Those teams arguably in best position to compete are those who previously competed in the now defunct National Soccer League, many of whom have returned to their state league roots with varied degrees of success.

Since the demolition of the NSL and ensuing creation of the A-League in 2003-04, relations between the bastions of "old soccer" and "new football" have been on the verge of abhorrent, with many left bitter over the Year Zero type manner in which the game was overhauled.

The FFA has come under increasing pressure from the Asian Football Confederation to introduce a relegation/promotion system, but that in itself may seem a herculean task, considering the measures undertaken to dissociate the new dawn from the days of old.

Until now, little has been done to end the confrontation but the FFA has recently shown signs of wanting to reconnect with the clubs of yesteryear instead of continuing with the Americanisation of the sport.

South Melbourne director George Triantos appears more than willing to compete in such a competition, but Tomas was more skeptical of the FFAs motives, hinting to the notion that it is only protecting its own interests, in terms of toeing the AFC line.

State league clubs have continued to be neglected by the FFA, and have had their needs ignored, so that the A-League clubs can have everything to themselves, from exposure, to talent, and to profit, he said.

Its all speculation at the moment, but well just have to wait and see.

Theoklitos leaves Victory for overseas ambition
Goalkeeper Michael Theoklitos has walked out on Melbourne Victory, but has yet to secure a contract with an overseas club.

The former A-League goalkeeper of the year played a huge role in Melbourne's A-League successes in the 2006/07 and 2008/09 A-League campaigns and has made no secret of his ambitions to play in Europe in a bid to further both his club and international careers.

Melbourne have already signed New Zealand international goalkeeper Glen Moss from the Wellington Phoenix and also has promising youngster Mitch Langerak in the squad.

"Michael is an inaugural Melbourne Victory playing squad member who has been a fantastic servant of the club over the past four years," Melbourne Victory football operations manager Gary Cole said.

"He has been a vital part of our two championship and premiership teams and we are very appreciative of his services.

"Michael was offered a contract, which he rejected. He has ambitions to play overseas and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

"While he will be missed, we're in a fantastic position with Mitchell and Glen, who are both outstanding goalkeepers and prospects for 2009/10 and beyond."

From the Bernabeu to the Central Coast Mariners

AN ITALIAN midfielder who once scored a goal against Real Madrid at the legendary Estadio Bernabeu has begun a one-week trial with Central Coast Mariners.

Giorgio Di Vicino is one of six triallists who will be involved in the Mariners' short tour to Queensland at the end of this week as coach Lawrie McKinna begins rebuilding the team following a disastrous conclusion to the last A-League season and a disappointing Asian Champions League campaign.
