Glory Close To Denilson Coup

EXCLUSIVE: Perth Glory are close to signing Brazilian star Denilson with the club set to put a seven-game offer to the Brazil legend in the next 24 hours.
au.fourfourtwo.com understands that the player is keen on coming to the A-League and if the contracts are signed, the former Brazil World Cup player could be unveiled at Glory's pre-season friendly with English club Wolves.

Denilson would undertake a five-week pre-season in Perth followed by a seven-game spell with David Mitchell's side.

The Brazilian star's brother is handling negotiations along with the player's local representatives Entourage management.

It's also understood that if the Perth deal falls through, there is a second A-League club ready to bid for Denilson's services.

"Denilson would be the most significant signing in the A-League's four year history," says one insider close to the deal. "100% he has expressed an interest in coming here."

Denilson Oliveira Araujo, 31, played in the 2002 World Cup for Brazil. The left winger has had stints at Real Betis and Bordeaux, and most recently at Palmeiras.

Fellow Brazilian star, defender Roque Junior, is also attracting interest, say sources.

The pair has received encouraging reports about the A-League from fellow Brazilians Juninho and Romario who both played in the A-League over the last two years.

A SIGNIFICANT piece in Wellington Phoenixs Hyundai A-League 2009/10 recruitment jigsaw has fallen into place with confirmation of the signing of English striker Chris Greenacre.

The 31-year-old joins the Phoenix on a two-year deal from Tranmere Rovers, where he was the clubs top scorer for three of his four seasons at the League One club.

Veteran English central defender Andy Todd has signed with Perth Glory.

The 34-year-old was rumoured to be a target for Sydney FC but the former Blackburn stalwart, currently on Derby's books, has decided to see out his career in Western Australia.

AZ ALKMAAR have confirmed they are looking to reinforce their team for next season by bringing in young Adelaide United goalkeeper Mark Birighitti.
The 18-year-old is currently under contract at witht he Reds but impressed recently on trial at the newly-crowned Dutch champions.

AZ are looking to bring Birighitti, who also has an Italian passport, in on a loan deal initially with a view to him starting off in the youth ranks but Adelaide United are holding out for a bigger fee.

"Mark was on trial here, and we would like to give him a chance for a season," AZ technical director Marcel Brands told voetbalprimeur.nl.

"We have told his club that we are willing to pay them a fee for that, but they talk about numbers which we will always reject.

"He is a young guy and because of his double nationality, he can start in Europe without a problem."

AZ already has several Australians on their books with Brett Holman, Joey Didulica and the young James Holland who they signed this season.

Brands added: "We have some good contacts in Australia and they give us every now and then some names. By giving these players a trial we see if they would be an asset for a stay at the club.

"We have good experiences with Australian football players. Their mentality is something we especially like."

could be too soon for him IMHO

Glory be - Perth in hunt for Recoba

Michael Cockerill
April 25, 2009

ROBBIE FOWLER might not be the star attraction of next season's A-League after all - rejuvenated Perth Glory yesterday opened negotiations to make Uruguayan star Alvaro Recoba the biggest signing in their history.

The hugely gifted playmaker - well known to Australian fans from the World Cup play-offs of 2001 and 2005 - comes off contract with his Greek side, Panionios, in July, and his representatives have made it known he is keen to come to the A-League.

Perth's flamboyant owner, Tony Sage, who assumed control of the club last season after buying out his former partners, has made it clear he intends to drag the Glory back to the summit of the domestic game after four seasons of failure, and sees the signing of a high-profile marquee player as crucial to his ambitions. Sage will step up discussions with Recoba's management this weekend, with the player's wage demands likely to be about $1.2 million for a season.

Recoba, 33, would perhaps shade Fowler, who has joined North Queensland Fury, as the competition's biggest drawcard if the Glory were successful in their pursuit. The man known as "El Chino" spent a decade at Italian giants Inter Milan - with loan spells at Venezia and Torino - before moving to Greece last year, and earned 69 caps for Uruguay before retiring from international football after the 2007 Copa America in Venezuela.

Six of those caps came against Australia - starting with the 1997 Confederations Cup and ending with a friendly in Sydney almost two years ago - but despite being a huge influence in most of those games, Recoba never managed a goal against the Socceroos. Nonetheless, he is regarded as one of the few players able to rival David Beckham as a set-piece specialist, and possesses an exquisite left foot capable of opening up some of the world's best defences.

Recoba's interest in playing in Australia surfaced this week, and Perth was the first club out of the blocks. Four other clubs - Newcastle Jets, Central Coast Mariners, Wellington Phoenix and Adelaide United - are, at this stage, without a marquee player next season, but only Perth have the means to meet his wage demands.

Perth has also been talking to Brazil's former World Cup winner, Denilson, about a marquee contract, but, while that deal hasn't been ruled out, it seems Recoba has emerged as their preferred option.

Recoba's former Uruguayan teammate Richard Morales has also expressed an interest in the A-League. The nomadic 34-year-old striker, who scored twice against the Socceroos in Montevideo in 2001, has been out of football since terminating a short-term contract with Ecuadorean champions LDU Quito in February, citing his father's ill health. Morales previously spent two seasons playing alongside Sydney FC striker John Aloisi at Spanish club Osasuna.

Meanwhile, Socceroos utility Mile Sterjovski and former Sydney FC defender Ruben Zadkovich have been told they are surplus to requirements at English Championship strugglers Derby County. Sterjovski has been considering a move back to the A-League but is more likely to find a club in Asia - at least until after next year's World Cup. Zadkovich, 22, joined the Rams after last year's Beijing Olympics but has failed to make an impression at Pride Park. It is his second spell in England following stints with Queens Park Rangers and Notts County.

Sterjovski and Zadkovich have another year left on their contracts, but Derby face financial difficulties and want to offload up to 10 players from the first-team squad.

Recoba, fark I'd love to go see Perth just to give that guy some serious bagging again.

"You can shove your devine right, right up your ass!"

IF he's still interested in playing and gets signed by Perth it will be a good signing, but if he's only coming here for the money and putting in 40 minute appearances and walking around like Romario did for Adelaide, he may as well f**k off to Uruguay.

Kareem, Recoba could live like a king in Uruguay, so lifestyle would not be an issue.

If he wanted the best life can offer, all he has to do is go home.

Money on the other hand, is another issue. And players like Recoba can get gigs all around the world in 'friendly' matches and the like, where appearance fees can be quite tasty.

He has to be genuine to play for Perth and put in the hard yards at training, be the proper marquee, and put in good consistent performances on match day. Other wise, it is a waste of money.

Having been stung by a fat and lazy Deanes a couple of years back, Perth will be keen to prove they can manage a marquee properly.
