A-League Transfers and Rumours

Oh so we got cash from their achievements? I wonder how the Reds would feel about that?

Is Archie Thompson the marquee at MVFC? If they don't have one this guy would be the best marquee in the league by far, as an investment I mean. Melbourne has the biggest Greek community outside Greece and would probably fill the Dome every week just to see a Euro 2004 Hero. The $$$ they would make just from ticket sales would comfortably cover his wages.

Adelaide (et al) were aware of these things before they accepted an A-League spot. On Melbourne - Archie is the marquee, and if Charisteas is too pricey for a pretty big German club, he's certainly too pricey for an A-League club, no matter how many Greeks you think might come out of the woodwork for him.

They would feel exactly the same as when they found out about it with all the other teams. Its called keeping the game viable and not letting any one club have a major advantage over another. (also called keeping the federation and individual teams afloat by exploiting their success)

Fair? No, but its for the good of our game.

Ex team mate of Haskawhatsit I believe

He was playing in the Dutch first division this season, so he has been playing at a high level recently, and not too old at 29. Time will tell if he is the goods or if we have even signed him at all.

Jets have signed Petrovski and Constanzo

Topor-Stanley will be coming to us next week

Nemanja Simovic (a former Serb youth international) is trialling with us, as is Nick Tsattalios from Sydney

We're thinking of signing ex-Brada, Nijmejen, Willem, Espanyol and Salzburg winger Kevin Bobson

Mile Sterjovski is staying at Derby

We are (again) interested in Ljubo Milicevic

Does that mean you'll still sing Sasho is a girls name?

NTS = average player for this league, will have good games and bad games.

Petrovski = good signing, but 2 years on a probable high wage I'm not sure about. I think Sydney and CCM will have got the best out of him.

Costanzo = solid signing, interesting to see how many years

Smeltz quits A-League for Turkey

Micheal Cockerill
February 3, 2009 - 10:52AM

Johnny Warren Medal winner Shane Smeltz has kicked his last ball in the A-League after accepting a lucrative three-year deal in Turkey.

The deal with Hacettepe S.K., completed at virtually the same time as Smeltz was on stage last night receiving the domestic competition's highest honour, trumped the offer from previous suitors Genclerbirligi for the services of the A-League's top marksman.

The New Zealand international scored 12 goals for Wellington Phoenix this season.

The transfer, believed to be worth $400,000, will see the bulk of the fee go to A-League newcomers Gold Coast United, who signed Smeltz as one of the key recruits for their debut season.

EXCLUSIVE: Shane Smeltz will turn down the transfer deal to Turkey to honour his contract at Gold Coast United, his agent confirmed this afternoon.

au.fourfourtwo.com this morning exclusively revealed Wellington Phoenix had accepted a transfer deal that would take the Johnny Warren Medal-winning Kiwi to Turkish Superlig side Genclerbirligi OFTAS, now renamed Hacettepe SK.

But this afternoon it was revealed the deal was put together by another agent without the knowledge of Shane's own agent or Gold Coast United.

"It is our intention for Shane to start his three year deal with the Gold Coast shortly," his agent Leo Karis told au.fourfourtwo.com today.

"I'm always looking for profitable opportunities for my clients but I did not feel comfortable with this situation."

Turkish media were hailing the transfer as a done deal this afternoon, claiming Smeltz had signed off on a $400,000 three and a half year contract.

But Smeltz's management say there is no way it will proceed.

"Shane has a contract with Gold Coast United starting in April 2009 and he intends to join them at that time," added Karis. "That is the end of the matter.

"Of course if Real Madrid were to come in June or July and offer to buy Shane, and if they go through the proper channels, and GC United were consulted and Shane was keen, then we would consider it.

"But for the moment, Shane is going to Gold Coast United."

The confirmation comes after a day of speculation on the Golden Boot winning striker. Gold Coast owner Palmer and manager Miron Bleiberg both spoke to Shane last night at the A-League awards ceremony as details of the possible deal emerged.

Talks continued this morning until it was clear Smeltz was still commited to joining the club.

A Gold Coast United spokesman added: "Shane spoke to [owner] Clive Palmer last night and said he was happy to fulfil his contract - and we fully expect him to be a Gold Coast player."
