well melbourne have another costa rican on their roster:

Victory order Costa Rican blend

July 14, 2008 MELBOURNE Victory have signed Costa Rica international Jose Luis Lopez on a two-year loan from Deportivo Saprissa.

Lopez, 27, who will join countryman Carlos Hernandez at Victory, captained Costa Rica at the 2004 Olympic Games and at the 2001 FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

The midfielder, who was capped for the national team in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup, has spent the past five seasons with Saprissa, winning four national titles and the 2005 CONCACAF Champions' Cup, which led to the club's first appearance in the Club World Cup.

Victory coach Ernie Merrick, who watched Lopez play during a recent scouting trip to Central America, said the Costa Rican was one of the most significant signings in his club's short history.

The timing of me going over to Costa Rica between AFC Champions League games was when Saprissa were in the finals, so I saw him play and he was quite outstanding, Merrick said.

The focus of my trip was to watch him play in the finals and to talk him into coming to Australia and we were successful on both counts.

Lopez replaces English winger Joseph Keenan, who has had his contract mutually terminated, as Victory's fourth foreign player alongside Hernandez, Scotland's Grant Brebner and Brazilian Ney Fabiano.

Lopez will arrive early next week and is set to feature in Victory's pre-season matches.

Sounds better than Hernandez and a very strong signing.
but I think it's like my accountant says... no one ever presents you with a set of negative projections ;D

Every player who comes here from south or central america is supposedly outstanding.

The reality is most of them are either duds or no better than whats already here.

Having said that most of them are only watched on DVD.At least Merrick watched this guy live.

The overseas recruitment has been appalling. Fred has been the only decent one.

Look at the quality foreigners in the ACL and compare them to the donkeys we've had in the HAL.

Depends what you mean by decent? If you mean stand out then yes Fred is the only 1.......however, I think Hernandez once settled became a valuable team member, I think Cassio did a job for Adelaide, I think Diego has had some good consistency for Adelaide, Felipe did an ok job as did Daniel.

The major flops were Jardel, Drovandi, Allessandro, Love and personally I think Patrick was crap!

Reinaldo had moments of brilliance, and moments of a donkey, he was average but had the ability to win a game in a second.  Certainly wouldn't be considered a flop!

I should have chosen my words more carefully. By decent, I meant far better than the local boys. Fred and Yorke were the only ones to fit this bill. I don't think any other imports have made a significant impact.

I guess my point is that there must be players in the thousands in South America and Africa that are far better players than we ones we've seen so far. In that respect, the signings thus far have been disappointing.

WELLINGTON Phoenix FCs already impressive defensive and midfield stocks have been further bolstered by the signing of former Sc**thorpe United and current All Whites player David Mulligan.

The 26-year-old defender joins the Phoenix on a two-year deal after a long career in England, including two seasons with Sc**thorpe in the Championship, one tier below the Premiership.

The signing of Mulligan is another significant signing coup for the Phoenix, who have recruited impressively and aggressively in their build-up to their second season in the Hyundai A-League.

With key men Andrew Durante and Jon McKain anchoring the Phoenixs defence, Mulligan will provide further defensive depth with his ability to play at left back and right back as well as offering another handy midfield option for Phoenix and All Whites coach Ricki Herbert.

Phoenix chief executive Tony Pignata said Mulligan had been on the clubs radar for some time.

Weve been discussing options with David for a few months and the opportunity came about last week and we agreed terms to a two-year contract. He offers us a lot of versatility given his ability to play at the back on the left or the right, as well as midfield.

Thats not to say we were concerned about the resources we already had in place in those positions prior to signing David, but its about providing cover.

One of the things we want this year is to have back-up [in all positions] and have depth in our squad. David certainly adds that depth in a number of areas.

Pignata said Mulligan had proven top-flight experience after playing for several top English clubs since 2000.

Hes played in the Championship, which is an extremely good league. Unfortunately things didnt work out for him when he went to Port Vale. He had a few options in the United Kingdom but he realised that the A-League was an attractive proposition.

It just goes to show that, instead of playing in the lower leagues in the UK, you can have a great career in the A-League.

The two-year deal was also significant for the Phoenix and for Mulligan, Pignata said.

We wanted to have some surety, as did David. It signals our commitment to the future and our commitment to playing a big part in the competition.

Mulligan will join his new club on Monday, July 28, to undergo a pre-season fitness assessment.

DAVID MULLIGAN
Date of birth: March 24, 1982 in Fazakerley, England (26 years)

Representative honours: New Zealand All Whites (19 caps, three goals), debut v China Olympic team, June 19, 2002; NZ under-23, NZ under-20, NZ under-17.

Biography: A regular starter for the All Whites, Mulligan brings extensive top-flight experience to the Phoenix. The former Barnsley and Doncaster Rovers player helped Sc**thorpe United achieve promotion to the Championship in 2006. He is a versatile defender who can play on both sides of the park as well as midfield. Mulligan is a dead-ball specialist with an eye for goal.
