Milligan set to join Gunners

Peter Kogoy

May 02, 2008

OLYROO captain Mark Milligan is poised to join English Premier League club Arsenal after impressing manager Arsene Wegner in a secret trial.

Speaking on Total Football on Fox Sports last night, Milligan confirmed he was poised to sign with the Gunners and quit Sydney FC subject to obtaining a British work permit.

An Arsenal source said that Wenger saw Milligan as a potential straight replacement for French international Matthieu Flamini, who is bound for AC Milan next season.

But Milligan's decision to head to the UK in a bid to secure his footballing future has not impressed his Olympics coach Graham Arnold, who was expecting him to join his Beijing-bound team-mates in camp in Townsville, North Queensland.

Milligan was the subject of transfer talks at the start of the last A-League season when his manager Craig Nettlebeck had the dashing young left back ready to sign with then newly promoted French club Metz.

But negotiations broke down when Sydney FC management refused the rising star's clearance to France.

Meanwhile, pending fatherhood could rule out Socceroos Lucas Neill, Mile Sterjovski, Jacob Burns and Josh Kennedy from playing in crucial World Cup qualifiers next month.

Australia coach Pim Verbeek yesterday revealed the four players' partners are all expecting "some time" in June with Australia due to contest four crucial matches in three weeks against Iraq in Brisbane and in neutral Dubai, then Qatar (away) and China in Sydney on June 22.

"It is a tricky situation. Obviously I have to make allowances," Verbeek said.

"It is no state secret all four boys' wives or partners are due to give birth in June around the time we have big games scheduled. I will plan my squad around them."

In addition to the pending births, Verbeek yesterday ruled out for the next group stage Mark Viduka, Tim Cahill and Patrick Kisnorbo because of injury.

Viduka, in a purple patch of form with Newcastle United, is troubled by an achilles problem which will require surgery.

Cahill (Everton) and Kisnorbo (Leicester City) both face lengthy spells on the sidelines with long-term foot and knee problems.

milligan is an awesome player but IMO his problem is in his head

you can't judge on on last season's HAL as he was basically injured for most of the season

wegner has been good at making unknowns superstars and i think milligan certainly can be

Wenger picks tall, quick, skilful unknowns. That's three strikes for Milligan.  ::) Can't see it happening.

Woke up and had a glance at the football section of the Sydney Morning Herald. I saw the headline Gunners train sights on Milligan. The article stated that Milligan had had a promising trial with the London club.

My initial thoughts were probably the same as everyone else, his going to be a reserve player at best if he signs. However, I could be judging too quickly. While my initial reaction to the news is that it is probably without substance, having a closer look Wengers previous record in the transfer market, such a move by the French manager is not entirely out of character. Wenger has made it a bit of a habit of his to sign relatively unknown defenders (e.g. Tomas Danilevičius, Kolo Toure, Igors Stepanovs) although his success rate at this is questionable. While this may sound like Im having a bit of a go at Milligan, Wenger has also had the habit of signing questionable backup defenders (e.g. Senderos, Pascal Cygan, Efstathios Tavlaridis, Matthew Upson). Additionally, the versatility of Milligan is another attribute that Wenger likes in his players. Given that it will be a free transfer for Arsenal and that Milligans contract should be relatively cheap compared to his potential team-mates, the risk, which is substantial in relation to his future, involved in the transfer is really bring assumed by Milligan rather than the club. If he signs, here are the possible scenarios:

Best Possible Outcome

He becomes the next Kolo Toure who was signed for the bargain price of 150,000.

Good Outcome

Milligan becomes a regular to semi-regular following the path set by the likes of Oleh Luzhny, Freddy Ljungberg, Sylvinho, Edu etc.

Decent Outcome

A few players have shown that there is definitely life after time with the Gunners reserves or being on the fringes of the first-team. Despite being at the struggling Birmingham, the duo of Muamba and Sebastian Larsson have been impressive. Jeremie Aliadiere has also found regular first-team football even though he has not been able to find regular goals. Luis Boa Morte, Sylvinho, Jermaine Pennant are Upson further examples of players finding top flight football after being displaced from their first-team positions or never really securing a position. Some have gone on to become stars at their new clubs such as Steve Sidwell (for Reading, not Chelsea) and David Bentley.

Worst Possible Outcome

He becomes the next Christopher Wreh (cousin of George Wreh), David Grodin, Stefan Malz, Igors Stepanovs or Tomas Danilevičius etc. He wont be in danger of becoming an expensive flop like Pascal Cygan, Richard Wright or Francis Jeffers. Actually, if you look at the history of transfers provided here, it becomes evident that Arsenal are very active in the market, even if you do not hear about the transfers. The number of Arsenal youth players ending up in the Championship or below are too many to list. However, Milligan is different from this group of players as he is not being signed as a youth player. If he does sign, he has arguable already broken through one barrier of being deemed not good enough to even keep around as a reserve player beyond youth years.

Equals

Should he make the move if given the opportunity? As I said before, he will be assuming much of the risk but despite this, the move is one that he should grab with both hands. Going through Arsenal seems to sort players out. If you have the ability to play at the top level, the club will bring it out of you. If you are below the standards required by Arsenal but you still are a good player, their reserves is a potential path to another top flight club. If Milligan is not god enough for the Premiership, the outcome will reflect this. The answer to the above equation is still unknown, but by going to Arsenal, Milligans ability will determine the answer and I think that is all that a player can ask for.

He will probably be loaned out to another club or play in the reserves won't he?
I can't see him playing in the EPL..well not for Arsenal anyway.

I believe milligan is good but not good enough for the gunners

I "believe" everyone except Ar-senile Vengar believes what you "believe".
Tragic when the thing that most looked responsible for the gunners season derailing was
the burn out factor caused by a squad lacking in depth then coupled with transfer windows not being utilised... And now they must surely know they need more depth... and they come up with farking MILLIGAN???

:piralaugh: :piralaugh: :piralaugh:

Holy shit... pity Derby's relegated or you'd think Reuben Zadko...oopswherethe f**kdidIjustkickthatball,  would have been snatched by the gunners as a shoe in to replace Fabregas!!!

That Fabregas. Massively over rated.

Milligan is the guy they need.

I presume his agent has got him dressed in his tracksuit and running up and down the streets near their training ground. Then he can tell other prospective League 1 clubs about how Arsenal were after him.

Van Stratten is now a free agent, negotiations are under way for him to come to the Mariners. He was heading to Sydney, though Bolton has a contract locked in there as one of the better paid players, someones arse should be kicked over that one.  Management doesn't want to see us playing with a second string keeper for an extended period.
