Oar Sails Into Roar

Jon Ritson
Apr 24 2008 10:29

QUEENSLAND Roar are poised to complete a deal for teenager Tommy Oar with the youngster expected to pen a three-year deal at Suncorp Stadium.

The 16-year-old was recently named as one of the 10 best players outside the A-League in FourFourTwo and Frank Farina has moved to secure the young left-footer.

At one stage it had looked as though Oar was destined for the Gold Coast Galaxy but the clubs failure to earn A-League admission next season put paid to the switch.

The teenager has impressed his coaches at the Queensland Academy of Sport over the last year and QAS head Mike Mulvey is confident Oar has what it takes to make the grade at professional level.

He said: Hes clever, skilful and a traditional winger. We saw with Michael Zullo and Robbie Kruse at the Roar how exciting it is when young players run at people and Tommy does it very well. Hes capable of playing for Australia right now at Under 20 level.

"In the last seven months at the QAS Tommy has learnt an awful lot about the game and improved out of sight. If he shows that level of improvement in the next 12 months, then I have no doubts that we have a serious footballer on our hands."

The teenager from Palm Beach said: Robbie Kruse and Michael Zullo are probably my favourite players at the Roar. Theyve been really exciting.

Oar becomes the third new signing of the pre-season and the third youngster plucked from the local scene. He joins David Dodd and Tim Smits in the Roar squad for next year.

The club is still waiting to hear whether moves for two Brazilian players have been successful.

The sheep shaggers should be the big improvers out of all with their new signings. Will be interesting to see how their crowds are if they are doing well.

their defence will be improved massively with durante and mckain coming in

don't think their attack will be much better

well they lost a quality playmaker in Felipe, but they still have a quality striker in Smeltz

i predict that smeltz will not be as effective this season

he was an unknown last season and i think a few coaches will work him out

he will have to step up to get last season's tally

Owens Jr Set For A-League - 442 rumour mill

Greg Owens younger brother, seventeen year old Ty Owens, is set to become the Central Coast Mariners latest signing. He will fill the vacant under twenties spot left by Bradley Porter.

Striker Owens has been training with the Mariners for the past year, and played twice for the club in Pre-season, scoring against Malaysia.

This article has been provided by:
Liam of Gosford

FourFourTwo Belief Factor: 8/10 - He's well-known to the Mariners so it would only make sense to sign him up properly at last.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First of all, only in the youth team 1st PLEASE Lawrie. And second of all "He will fill the vacant under twenties spot left by Bradley Porter", whats that all about? It like to know if this is just some bloke with a lot of time on his hands, or someone in the know.

Agree with Mick on this one. Can't see him having another season like the last one. I don't think he's good enough to do it year in, year out.

Their defence was the problem and it seems as though the new defensive signings should sort that out.

I don't rate them a serious threat, but they shouldn't finish last again. I hope for their sake they have a good year and really build on the solid crowds from 07/08.

Will be an important year for smeltz. He is young. Can back it up i think.
Wellington will make the 4 for me. They should have a good solid defence to start this year, which is enough to win many games. Hell Covic was enough to get the scum to the finals with constant quality saves 2 years in a row.

Mckain and durante will be solid for them, and inspire the team to perform.
