you have to remember that greg didnt know he was starting for the grand final. and they were his words to me on sunday night.
Well, hopefully he didn't have to leave the nightclub on Saturday night after being told he was playing on Sunday - like what allegedly happened to Jamie McMaster in v1 GF.

BTW, Greg and McMaster play a similar style of midfield game from what I've seen of both players. However, Greg possesses an almighty boot when he really gets to belt it, and can pass more deftly.

owens has far better ball skills... he skinned some players as if they were cardboard cutouts when he was playing well and injury free.

another pro to greg is that he isnt a jigsaw puzzle like mcmaster was.... he doesn't fall apart in the box. mcmaster went down EVERY TIME... even if it was just tripping over his bootlace or being nudged.

Yep, I like Owens, he'll come good indeed I think, and has never really gone bad to be fair.
I think Lawrie sees a lot of promise in Owens; This is one of Lawrie's great gifts, like with Kwassie - I would not have been starting Kwassie in some games where Lawrie did and he proved crucial. I think he believes in G'O current skill but also his future and potential, and thats why he started him.

hopefully that is true
i think owens can and will get alot better
my dad thinks the opposite
which is a shame becasue he is still a mariner
so i will support owens  because i think he will get better

I am sort of glad we got rid of pondeljak. As good as he was (setting up goals all the time) Ifelt his decision making lacked quite a bit. He was too selfish at times and didnt know when to shoot (took shots when the pass was a better option).

I am also still waiting for progress on the Elrich front. Looks like they are def. gonna play together nest season...but for who?
Between us and Adelaide is what I read (in newspaper and on this forum). I hope we get them (dont mind ahmad but I absoultely love tarek and think we really need him).
There family is on sydney so thats pro-mariners but tarek wouldnt want to go to biggest rivals so thats pro-adelaide.
Here would be my formation next season
                  Vukovic (eventually)
T.elrich----Boogard-----Wilkinson----Heffernan
----------------Jedinak----------------------
----------------Hutchinson------------------
------A.Elrich---------------Caceres---------
-----------Petrovski-------Mrdja/Kwasnik
We dont really desperately need Ahamd but he would be nice (coz we already have Kwasnik and Owens there) but apart from Osman (which Tarek is still better than) I dont like our right back options (unless boogard stays there and we bring in Ogrady in middle).

if Tarek was to sign for us he would be about 45 minutes closer to family that would have to count but I read a rumor he wants to stay at the scum, which is believable and I believe Ahmad would sign for them to replace Bridge. Because you have to remember Bridge was playing as a right winger for most of the season in a 4-2-3-1, cause griffo was the front man

hope not...but would Newcaslte be able to afford Ahmad ? (they are having trouble affording current players). I mean Ahmad was on a marquee salary at Phoenix (although not worth it) so he would still command a hefty salary!

There has been a lot of speculation regarding Jess Van Stratten. Here are some facts. Jesses contract with Juventus runs out at the end of this season. At present he is in negotiations with Juventus. He wants at least a  2 year contract and because he has been on the bench for a long time. He wants to be loaned out so he can get some game time. The reason he wants two years is that he will then qualify for a European passport. If this does not work out he will come back to Australia. Last week he also held talks with the Gold Coast. Jess is under the same management team as Danny and Clint Bolton.

He is also ordinary!

Australia has a production line of good keepers .... Lawrie will find one, and I also hope he gives Redmayne a chance. Danny was young and after seeing him at Bonnyrigg a risk in V1.

But Jess is also a coastie  - he went to my school. But we have some good keeping talent. But if it falls through in Europe then some doors may open towards coming home but i wouldnt be fussed if he did or didnt play for us.

Also on Alosi i will be devoed if he goes to another A League club but he does have a few years left even if he goes back overseas could be a possibility to return in a couple of years when hes past his peek in europe but perfect for A League

We won't be signing the Elrich brothers
I heard that Adelaide are very close to signing the too....sigh!
We still need a bit of pace up front as well as a creative midfielder and a winger who takes on players successfully (sorry kwasnik). Not to mention a right back!
Shopping List
New pacy striker to partner Sasho (of brosque/thompson/burns mould)
Creative midfielder (although hutch and jedinak would do)(not top priority)
Exciting Winger (of Kruse/Fernandez mould)
Right back (some1 who can attack a bit)
Question...i heard Owens can play right back as well...is he any good?

Watch last year's grand final and note the final scoreline.

No.

My defence...he waas playing left back!
(which is who should have been amrking thompson anyway, lol)

Kareem I would rate the creative midfielder above the exciting winger as we signed Caceres. As a matter of fact we should try and sign 2 creative mids, 1 centre back, 1 left back that can play on both sides and a striker in order to plug the holes. if we decide to buy/loan a goalie cover for Danny, we should loan or release Trott or Redmayne, because we wont need anymore than 2 at a given time this year as there are no more olympic qualifiers therefore 3 are taking up too many squad places. If the youth league does come in though, Redmayne would easily be the starting keeper for that side

I want him to be playing Centreback he is the better there than right back IMO. Its just we need another centreback for back up for when we get injuries and suspensions as both Wilko and Boogs missed a lot of games this year due to injury and we could find ourselves depleted without another centreback. As for a right back we are less exposed there than left back as we should still have both Osman and Clark next year. Whereas with Ceccoli and Brown gone we have only 1 left back, hence my choice for a fullback that can play both sides but is ideally a left footed left back.

and this seems to be going off topic as it probably belongs in the 2008/2009 squad topic under mariners generally IMO

If we get another CB, please have him have some pace. We need someone who can chase down the thompsons of the league when they counter and heff has pushed forward.

Kwassie turned dozens of defenders this year. He also scored 6 goals. Who are we seriously going to bring in there who will score more and back themselves to beat players?

There is no room in the centre of the park unless gumps leaves as it seems. But they will play second fiddle to hutch and jedi i would say.

Ozzy is great at right back, but some cover would be nice.

On another note, looks like Dukes wants to leave NU.
He is pushing on in age. Would be a good time for him to return to melbourne, though i dont think he will.

Dukes and Thompson would be hard to beat.
